When it isn't the network (but it's always the network, isn't it!?) then it's the storage -- but can you prove it??
SolarWinds Storage Resource Manager was part of our strategy to answer the question "But isn't our storage fast enough?" or "If our storage frame were to fail, what would the impact be?" SRM, though primarily used by our Storage team, was instrumental in giving our DR team and our CMDB team the insights they needed to handle performance planning, DR planning, and what we called Infrastructure Lineage.
- Unmasks storage performance metrics and gives a common dashboard for monitoring.
- A simple, intuitive interface for adding supported storage frames.
- Lineage -- "The guest OS is connected to the virtual host and the virtual host is connected to the ... wait, what LUN is that?!?" #SOLVED.
- No ability to add your own storage frames -- if it isn't supported, you aren't monitoring it.
- Troubleshooting connectivity failures lack full transparency. It isn't needed often, but could be more verbose.
- It's expensive relative to the other tools from SolarWinds -- but, then again, so was your shared storage!
- Building an infrastructure lineage, the same lineage shown in AppStack (available in the Orion platform) was awesome.
- We struggled to make the ROI work, especially with vendor-specific tools often included with storage purchases.
- Price has scared more than one manager and, in my freelancing work, more than one customer away from a purchase.
Storage Resource Manager gives a converged view. If you have already invested in SAM, NPM, VMAN, etc. then it makes sense to add SRM to the mix. That is ultimately the beauty of the Orion platform -- it is a single view of so many platforms, with such a diverse array of hardware and vendors, that the multi-vendor data center can't live without it.
SRM is competing against vendor-native tools. In many cases, the price points may be similar, but if you have a heterogeneous storage environment, then this is the tool for you.

Solarwinds SRM - The Ultimate Storage Monitoring Tool.
We have a wide variety of Dell SANS across our estate, ranging from Dell EqualLogics, Compellents and MD (FC and iSCSI) shelves. We recently purchased the SRM module for Orion to integrate with Solarwinds DPA and NPM. Its made a huge difference in terms of visibility and linking up with performance issues from storage.
- Granular visibility of IOPS and IO.
- Capacity Planning.
- The ability to link storage to databases through Orion DPA.
- Alerting and Reporting.
- Issues getting SMI working correctly to monitor Compellents through SRM.
- The ability to break down alerts to a more granular level.
- Before we purchased SRM, we have very little visibility of the performance of our disks, which would lead to issues
- Single pane of glass dashboards allow us to spot issues quickly
- Capacity forecasts allow us to also tackle storage issues before we hit a point of no return
SRM is a standout against all of the competitors really. If you own Orion, then this is a must-have module to integrate, especially with DPA, if you also have the module. Out of the box, it is a fantastic product. Whereas a product like Nagios requires development work to get it even remotely close to SRM. PRTG is cluttered and messy and OpsManager functionality isn't even on the same level.

Storage Resource Monitor Easy to set up, manage and monitor storage.
This is only being used by our IT Department. We use it to monitor our storage for performance issues as well as plan ahead for expansion. It helps us find out if certain systems need to be moved to faster storage arrays.
- Easy to use interface.
- Easy to set up.
- Integrates with our other Solarwinds products.
- Works with a lot of different storage arrays.
- I have not found any cons of this product
- We are able to plan ahead for storage expansion. This allows us to decide what we need and hold out for special discounts instead of needing to purchase right away.
- We are able to move our systems to faster storage if they need it. This keeps systems the most productive
Didn't evaluate other products as this easily integrates with our Solarwinds System that was already in place so we did not have to have more than one monitoring system

Storage Resource Monitor - with ease
SolarWinds Storage Resource Monitor allows us to see at a glance all of the metrics that are available on our storage devices. Without this tool we would either have to connect to the CLI and look for specific things or build scripts and custom dashboards on our own. This makes monitoring and reviewing much easier.
- Asset inventory for storage
- Predicting the future usage
- Performance metrics
- Revealing the internal statistics such as temperatures and hardware condition
- The list of devices covers the most popular, but adding more types of devices is always helpful
- Device types make it difficult to connect some times (on the vendor side) but the product does a good job, configuration could be easier for setting up devices.
- With SRM we have proactively monitored devices to stay ahead of data growth
- SRM makes monitoring of internal asset condition much easier
- SRM make monitoring of live statistics much easier.
We have a full suite of SolarWinds products and did not evaluate other options for a full package. For selective monitoring we log into the devices, but this has made that much easier as we have a dashboard rather than logging into devices one at a time.
