I use squarespace for my website as a freelance artist & writer. It's a simple, low-maintenance tool for setting up a website & portfolio, including images, galleries, outside links, etc.
  • Simplicity. Very user friendly, fast to set up something basic.
  • Templates are very nice looking & they add new ones frequently.
  • Easy to upload or embed content in just about any major format.
Cons
  • Templates look very...template-y.
  • Gallery functionality is a little difficult to use for something like a portfolio. It's easy to add the content, but not as easy to sort by topic/tag - you have to toggle between the gallery page and the page where the gallery is being displayed.
  • In some cases hard to control exact display requirements (this is good and bad, as its a side effect of their responsive designs).
Well suited for anyone who needs a website fast. Easy to set up with no coding experience, very flexible and customizable. Very little (or no) ongoing maintenance is required, and it's easy to move content around as needed - add/remove pages, update galleries, etc. Perfect for a very small business that needs a professional-looking web presence but lacks the resources to hire a designer.

I don't use Squarespace in my office, but I use it for my freelance clients. Most recently, I built an entire website for a lawfirm using Squarespace and it. is. awesome.
  • Squarespace, in general, is very, very intuitive. If you're fairly comfortable using techy things and computers, you'll learn fairly quickly. If you spend just a solid whole day playing around with Squarespace and watching their helpful videos, you'll get it down just fine.
  • They have a fantastic index of help videos and documents for new users like us. If I ever got stuck (and, well, I did), a quick Google search had me land on the right Squarespace help web page or video!
  • THEIR TEMPLATES ARE BEEEAAAUUTTIIIIFFFUUUULL. I love so many of them, it was difficult to choose just one for the website. I've explored WordPress and Wix's templates and, in my opinion, Squarespace has the best ones.
Cons
  • The way you place images on your web pages is wonky. It doesn't work like a rich text box, and it's not as simple as just drag and drop. You have to add spacers here and there. But the annoying thing with spacers is that you're limited to certain sizes. On a couple occasions, I tried to center an image on a page and I just COULDN'T, because their spacers didn't space the way I wanted them to.
  • Is there any way that users can adjust the spacer sizes by pixel size?
I've used Squarespace for both personal use and business use. In my opinion, if you're just looking for a portfolio for your personal website, you Squarespace might be too big of an investment. You'll be paying to use a big platform, but end up just using a few of their tools. For businesses, however, I think Squarespace is the way to go. I prefer Squarespace to many of their competitors because they have a fabulous Google Analytics integration for those who loooove data (like me!).

In our organization, we use Squarespace to create an internal website for our employees. The website has pages and content that our teams can easily access while out in the field, and links to resources that they can access whenever they want. It's become our knowledge center for all things related to the company. We also host an internal company blog on the site.
  • The website was easy to create, using Squarespace's user-friendly tools.
  • Making edits and updates are also very easy, and requires very little training to teach someone new to do so.
  • We were able to password protect our site, so the resources contained within are only available to those in the company.
  • We are using a search tool to make it easier to find what you are looking for.
Cons
  • The search tool is helpful, but lacks an ability to sort your results. Maybe it's just the tool we're using, but it's a feature I would like to have.
  • When adding custom images to your site, the image size requirements could be easier to understand.
  • The mobile app to help write blog posts on the site lacks some of the functionality of the desktop version.
We use Squarespace in an internal fashion (employee facing) whereas I think most users would use it to host a customer or visitor facing site. Either way, the web pages are very easy to create and update, no matter the desired outcome. If you don't have any knowledge about coding your own site, Squarespace is a great alternative to get you online.

Our company, which is made up of a family of companies, uses Squarespace for our each of main websites. These are the first place anyone would look for information on our products. They contain all our contact information, product and installation information, downloads, images, maps and galleries. It ensures that all possible information on our companies and products is easily accessible and always available, both for our customers and our sales force. We currently have 5 different Squarespace sites, one for each of our companies. They are all linked together in a manager account and are easily edited and updated by the site manager and those who have editing credentials.
  • Galleries - These are robust and clean. Able to be edited to suit your needs and configured to show off the high quality images companies produce.
  • Blogs - The blog feature is very developed. We do not utilize it in our companies, since we are less of a social product. But a good blog helps bring a personal feel directly to the consumers.
  • Site development - As a novice html user, I can easily edit and maintain our sites without the need for costly web developers.
Cons
  • Images - Though the gallery function is robust and able to be customized, I find that when placing images directly on to page layouts, that the software often resizes or moves the image to suit the template. I often wish I could specify the image size directly with pixel dimensions to ensure that it does not move or resize itself, which can cause lower resolution images to look blurry.
  • Sidebars - nearly all of Squarespace's current templates do NOT have the option for a sidebar included. This is something we love to use as it keeps the most current notices we wish to share visible on all pages without the need to edit every single page.
  • Folders and Indexing - Squarespace currently does have the ability to make dropdown menus by creating folders of pages. However, having a subfolder is not supported. Nor can you nest an Index, a collection of galleries or images, inside of a folder, which means that our products cannot be subdivided into their product folders. It just means we have to have a separate place for them, and our visitors to the site must look in two different places to get the complete information on some items.
Squarespace is more suited to simpler sites. If you need to have complex linked galleries and pages, it is not for you. However, if you are someone who considers yourself an artist, such as photographers, bloggers, painters, etc, you will find this perfect for your work. They also have great templates for selling items with Paypal.

I have helped small business owners develop their online presence using Squarespace. In particular, building a food/recipe site for a well-known chef who needed something professional looking while really emphasizing the imagery of the dishes he created. Squarespace is a visually stunning platform and did a great job showcasing the finished recipes.
  • Visual representation - the way Squarespace showcases imagery is excellent.
  • Flexibility - we were able to create unique pages as well as elements within pages that really showcased finished recipes.
  • SEO - The system allowed us to craft dedicated title and description tags for each page to help boost the organic traffic to the site.
Cons
  • Content Management - Trying to integrate fixed pages with a blog functionality, while maintaining a consistent look and feel, have been a challenge. The platform seems to do well as either a fixed site OR a blog site, but not one with mixed types of content.
  • Creating a Master Template - It would be nice if Squarespace allowed you to maintain a master style sheet that could be applied to other pages on the site. We created a workaround by creating a blank, unpublished, page and simply duplicating it each time a new page was being created.
  • Scheduling Content - Other platforms allow you to easily create and schedule content for publishing later, but either Squarespace doesn't have that functionality or I was not able to figure out how to use it.
I find that Squarespace is very well suited for a small to medium size business that wants a visually attractive site that is easy to put together. However, it takes some technical knowledge to figure out the SEO and customization options (which is not unusual). The templates are very nice and offer a great deal of flexibility in choice. However, it lacks some flexibility in creating "visual" pages with a "blog-like" navigation. You either need to decide on the blog type user experience or do a LOT of manual coding to create the user and next-page flows that a blog would provide.
