Act-On

Act-On is well suited for your business if you have a lot of contacts and are averse to the pay by the contact model of competing marketing automation software. Act-On charges by emails sent, not by how many contacts are in the database, so it makes it a great place to store everything, even if you aren't engaging with some of those contacts

Litmus

After using some other email testing services, I've found Litmus to be the most robust tool with the most features. Beyond providing a good product, they provide excellent support, maintain an involved community of email marketing professionals, and provide industry-leading information in their blog and free webinars. Litmus is best suited for organizations needing to efficiently turn custom coded email campaigns or companies that have many different email templates. If your organization is only sending a monthly newsletter and your template is well tested, Litmus may be overkill for your needs.

Pros

Act-On

  • Act-On's customer service is exceptional, they are quick and thorough when you are needing help. For example, we could not figure out how to automate a birthday date for our birthday campaign and the representative was able to walk through the process with myself and another team member. This is a strength of Act-On because many other companies do not have customer services that will speak with you, they direct you to blogs or informational sessions.
  • The landing pages that Act-On has created for use on the web is exceptional. The formatting is very user-friendly and the templates are great to navigate. The landing pages allow you to make the page fit whatever campaign or reason you are in need of. This is a strength of Act-On because the landing pages resolve the issue of having to create actual web pages.
  • The spam feature of Act-On's emails is a great add on. This feature allows you to test how the spam alerts are triggered in your email and how you can fix it. This has helped many emails be developed in a way so that they reach many more people than they would have without this feature. many other programs do not have this feature.

  • Litmus helps legitimize the struggles of every email developer.

  • Landing Page Design. The drag and drop builder is OK. But it feels very limited for someone who has a good knowledge of HTML, CSS, Javascript, etc. Inevitably, there will be something that you simply can't do in Act-On that you could do in a standard web design environment.
  • No Server Side Scripts. There isn't any way to retrieve data in your lists and add it to a landing page. Basically, you can't use any data stored in an Act-On list and add it to a landing page.
  • It's limited. There is simply some data you can't pull from Act-On and into a 3rd Party Reporting app.

  • I very much like using Litmus Builder, however, I have recently had issues with it taking a very long time to load from Checklist to Builder, and also very long wait times for giving links to share with other developers.
  • I'd like to see more up-to-date devices offered for Android and Gmail for Android - such as the more recent Galaxy versions offered by Samsung.
  • It would be great to see an actual support ticket when submitting to litmus in order to more easily communicate any issues that may have developed since submitting that ticket.

Litmus has integrations that make the software an integrated part of my work every day. Being able to test right within my email builder is just brilliant. Daily I also use the web interface to review analytics and spam testing. Overall it is one of the pieces of software I use daily without any complaints or issues.

Act-On

HubSpot's pricing tiers are much cheaper in some cases, and they provide some of the tools that are included with Act-On Software's premium tiers. I believe Act-On has more versatility in tracking conversion and other rates out-of-the-box compared HubSpot, which is why we chose Act-On for our production metrics and have continued using their products.

The only other email rendering services I have tried is the Email on Acid integration built into Sailthru. It was a stripped-down version of the EoA platform and was difficult to navigate. At that point, I had used Litmus for nearly three years and did not have much trust in the EoA integration when I saw some rendering disparities.

  • Increased employee efficiency for sure, I am able to churn out so many more emails than if I did it manually.
  • Better customer service - we honor opt-outs and unsubscribes automatically, ensuring that our prospects do not receive any more emails than they want.
  • ROI - the ability to schedule emails and plan ahead helps us stay on top of our marketing calendar and produce more marketing messages, leading to more sales. Well worth the investment.

  • The price is absolutely worth the investment. We have seen increased engagement with emails (e.g., the heat map 'lights up' in more areas, a lower unsubscribe rate, and users scrolling further down the email) and the back-and-forth between me (the creator), and my testing team has been minimized because I can catch issues before sending out the email to be tested. It significantly reduces the time it takes to create, test, and schedule an email.
  • While the webinars are free, they cost time. And they're almost always worth it, even if they're just on in the background. The State of Email content they generate - and offer FOR FREE (it's a LOT of data they're giving you for free) - is an amazing side bonus. They offer a ton of email productivity tips and really helpful content. And again, for free!
  • Although I haven't really mentioned this in previous sections, the Builder tool is sometimes really useful to code in also. I generally preferred Sublime Text , but lately I've been using the Builder tool instead, as it allows you to see your code changes in real time (vs loading up previews each time). Then you can save it and preview across all devices. It's a huge time saver in that sense as well.
