ActiveCampaign

ActiveCampaign is perfect for teams that want a lightweight, easy to use email software which still has the ability to deeply integrate with your codebase/business logic (through tagging via their API and automations). It strikes the balance nicely between allowing developers and marketers to collaborate --- simply instruct the developers to tag users appropriately in the business logic / code base, and then the marketers can use AC's automations initiated by a tag to come up with whatever complex follow-up they desire (all without bugging the developers again).

AWeber

Aweber is particularly suited to small to medium businesses and organizations who need to manage their mailing lists and communicate periodically with their customers or members.Aweber is not particularly suited to agencies who need to broker and provide these services to multiple clients. It's mainly an end-user application.

Cons

  • The automations builder is a bit clunky sometimes and requires a lot of effort to do seemingly easy tasks.
  • The CRM is a little weak for our sales team. They'd like a tighter integration into Gmail as well as a more robust task management system.
  • The reporting could use a lot of work. There really aren't' any visual reports to show me funnel info and conversion rates of my leads from one step to the next. This would make it easier to improve our marketing efforts.

  • So many features that sometimes it's hard to find things.
  • Can't put lines or outlines around the actual newsletter templates when you make them from scratch. There should be a way to easily outline boxes/areas within the newsletters. There isn't like there is with some other email tools we use.
  • Can't upload messy lists of email addresses like I can with other programs we use. For instance, in other programs, I can upload a text file with names, addresses, punctuation, etc and the program will pull all the emails out of that mess into a nice neat list. Aweber can't do that.

See previous answers ... the design / customization interface could be more intuitive and elegant .. for example, for me it has been difficult to easily figure out how to place pictures / images to the right, left or center of text.

I have always received prompt phone or live chat support that has resolved my issues on the first call in a competent, knowledgeable and friendly manner. By contrast MailChimp offers no live chat or phone support; they only offer email support and the response time for MailChimp is slow by comparison to AWeber.

Alternatives Considered

Main difference is the automations and number of integrations offered through ActiveCampaign. They offer extensive logic trees whereby you can automate entire campaigns based on customers' actions and reactions. MailChimp, as we've always used it, is better for one-off emails sent en masse but without the level of personal and automated follow up that Active Campaign allows.

At the time we used it , AWeber offered features that MailChimp (free version) wasn't offering. We used AWeber instead of Infusionsoft because of the price. We have since switched from AWeber to ActiveCampaign for our email marketing. We liked how ActiveCampaign worked. It was easier to set up the automated campaigns that we wanted to do.

Return on Investment

  • Through ActiveCampaign we were able to sell out our first ever business conference we ever held, and by keeping in touch with them through ActiveCampaign we were able to get 6 - 10 new clients in the first few months of implementation.

  • Email marketing is a very valuable part of any business. So if you don't already have something going, AWeber could be your first step into this world. I would say it is good for the beginner or intermediate email marketer.
  • We have seen a huge decrease in responses and sales if we don't use an automated system with email marketing. AWeber executes this well.
  • Overall, using AWeber was a necessity at the time of our product launches. It helped us keep everything organized.
