Adobe Target

1. We changed ship dates on individual product pages depending on customer location so they would have an accurate timeline for their orders. This really helped lower our volume of customer service calls on tracking orders.2. We have stores as well as an online presence. With Target we were able to advertise sales on b-stock items from our warehouse to our local customers without letting those that live outside a certain radius see the promo.3. If your marketing team doesn't have a tech background this software has a steep learning curve. There is quite a bit of manual configuration required. The image carousel is one example that we struggled with.

Google Optimize

Google Optimize should be on top of any business list. It's easy to implement. If you have Google Tag Manager already in place, then you actually don't need help from a developer. However, if you don't have GTM implemented then you definitely need help. But it's a one-time setup. With so many guides available online, you won't be stuck.

Pros

Adobe Target

  • The test report page is very intuitive. It is very easy to analyze a test based on different segments such as new and returning users.
  • Having confidence levels inserted into the reporting tool is a key feature. While it is a simple feature, it allows users to easily understand when results are significant.
  • We have recently created swim lanes for traffic and this has been very helpful to make sure that different tests are not crossing over in terms of traffic.

Google Optimize

  • Easy user interface that can be picked up on fast.
  • Fairly easy troubleshooting when it comes to proper code placement and configuration.
  • Fantastic reporting that clearly explains when your test has reached statistical significance.
  • Great options for really granular targeting.
  • Superb integration with Google Analytics.

Cons

Adobe Target

  • Documentation - the current docs are fine for the basics but when you want to do the advanced stuff it sucks and Client Care aren't that helpful with the tricky questions.
  • Standard - the new 'Standard' WYSIWYG version of TnT is very new so I'll be kind however it's full of bugs and unusable - hopefully this will be fixed soon as it looks to have a lot of potential.
  • QAing your tests - the Onsite feature has never worked properly in all the time I have used it. I've been told by people at Adobe not to use the feature.

  • Integration is not good. You have to add a "flickering" code to avoid loading the actual page (in case you get the experiment and not the control). This is the main reason why I am giving them a low score. The flickering code doesn't show absolutely ANYTHING until the time you state. If you add a low time, it will show a page and then reload and show the new one, which confuses the user. So this is a very bad experience from the user's perspective.
  • Documentation regarding the "flickering" thing is not that accurate. It took a lot of time to actually get it to work. Debugging needs to improve.

Once you get started with your testing program, you realize that it is necessary to continue. You must keep optimizing in order to remain a vital competitor in today's marketing world. Even if you're not using Test & Target or any other user experience testing software, you ought to be performing comparison tests on your own, simply by routing your audience to different experiences and quantifying the aggregate of the results.

Customer service was friendly and very reachable. However, they weren't always knowledgeable in helping us solve our problems. Also, because of our contract we were limited in the number of support hours and help we could receive.

In-Person Training

Adobe Target

Adobe Target 8.1

The instructor that came to train us was awesome and this training was very useful. I would recommend it for anyone who is going to be using this software. I only mark it lower because it is an added expense to an already expensive product, and a lot of the training covered the "Target" portion of the software (which again, we didn't use)

Online Training

Adobe Target 6.1

The training was very easy to understand, however it would have been more useful to my development team than me. It was also primarily over-the-phone, which is never as easy to follow as in-person. We ended up scheduling and paying for an in-person training session to supplement the online/phone training because it wasn't helpful enough.

Implement using a global mBox on the page so you can change any and everything over the traditional method. Traditional method is good if you do not have technical web dev resources, do not know Javascript/jQuery, or you have money to blow on mBox calls. Global deployment reduces mBox calls and allows you to touch many parts of the page easily. A lot more customizable

Alternatives Considered

Adobe Target

I have used Optimizely for A/B testing. Optimizely makes it easier to set up almost any type of testing experiment. Optimizely is also strongly recommended for a limited number of users and when you want to optimize the cost. Optimizely was selected over Adobe Target since the start-up company had a limited budget to invest on A/B testing platform.

Other products probably are more in-depth, but also cost more money and require technical resources to install.

Return on Investment

Adobe Target

  • It has helped us make decisions about whether to put manpower behind certain website strategies, as we've been able to test them temporarily and run A/B tests to prove effectiveness.
  • It allows us an easy way to serve different content to different groups of staff members on our internal intranet.
  • It allows us to know more about our users by measuring analytics of how users interact with the dynamic page elements served by Adobe Target.

Google Optimize

  • Positive impact on conversions at the earliest goal.
  • The significance becomes small when e-commerce is the main goal of a test due to multiple funnel settings. Using secondary goals mitigates this issue.
  • Linear funnel is much easier to track.
