AWS OpsWorks

OpsWorks facilitates the management, monitoring and maintenance of the complete stack of Chef's infrastructure, to be part of AWS has a large community for support and assistance, it also concentrates a lot of documentation that can empower our devops area to shorten the curve Learning. Good tool to automate tasks for the company's devops and IT staff.

IBM Tivoli NetCool Configuration Manager

This is the best tool for monitoring purpose. We can associate Control-M with this tool(Netcool) for monitoring any activity on Control-M ( Like the jobs which got failed, the long running jobs, jobs that are not started yet, the node down alerts etc.)We can also link it with the drives to get the warning alerts on drive memory status. We receive a critical alert whenever C drive is more than 90% used. Likewise in other drives also.

Pros

AWS OpsWorks

  • The interface is quite intuitive and allows you to discover and easily find what you want to do and what other features are within OpsWorks.
  • Chef integration is pretty seamless and there are a good set of options and operating systems to choose from
  • It makes things like auto scaling set up, either via load or time, more straight forward and intuitive than what you'd typically see via the EC2 console

IBM Tivoli NetCool Configuration Manager

  • This is one of the essential monitoring tool i have ever used before.
  • The best feature is its color code as per the priority. Black color alert - Extremely critical(P1), Red color alert- Critical(P2), Yellow color alerts- Major alerts(P3), Orange Color alert- Minor alerts(P4)
  • We receive a heart beat alert every hour to know whether the tool is working fine or not. This is the best function of this tool.
  • There is no additional training is required to use this tool as its coloring feature of the alerts make it more easy for the users.
  • The best user friendly tool.

Cons

AWS OpsWorks

  • Getting up and running with OpsWorks is a very technical and potentially time-consuming process. You need to know the ins and outs of Chef/Puppet if you really want to get into it and there isn't a convenient way to test out the environment locally so debugging can be time-consuming.
  • To take advantage of some of the newer AWS instance types you need to be running on a VPC, which again is a pain if you don't have a DevOps team.
  • The error logs and monitoring metrics in OpsWorks are pretty basic and haven't changed much over the years.

IBM Tivoli NetCool Configuration Manager

  • Since it is associated with the Control-M,there is a very small delay in throwing an alert on the Netcool console.
  • I have never faced any as such issue in this tool where there is any area of improvement needed.

Support Rating

AWS OpsWorks

AWS OpsWorks 6.0
Based on 1 answer
Unless you pay for a pricey support package getting support on OpsWorks will be pretty slow. Documentation is also relatively limited and sometimes hard to follow when compared to competitors. Generally, we've been able to get the answers we need from OpsWorks support when we run into problems but don't expect rapid responses.

Alternatives Considered

AWS OpsWorks

OpsWorks is an orchestration tool, basically you use it to specify the state you want your network to be in by specifying the state you want each resource (server instances, applications, storage) in which you want that resource to be. And specify the state in which you want each resource. The evaluated competitors have other benefits that in our case did not provide as many benefits as OpsWorks.

IBM Tivoli NetCool Configuration Manager

We have used the other monitoring tool as well like the monitoring tool associated with the Control-M itself but it not even close to the Netcool's features. In Control-M monitoring console we receive the only alerts which is associated to the unusual activity on the Control-M(Like job failure, long running job, jobs which are not started on its schedule time etc.) but in Netcool console we have diverse range of monitoring like drives notification, unusual activity on Control-M etc

Return on Investment

AWS OpsWorks

  • OpsWorks has allowed some of our more simple application stacks to be implemented quickly and effectively. Whilst it is difficult to put actual numbers on it, it meant we could hit the ground running before tackling the more complex world of Cloudformation/Terraform to manage parts of our infrastructure.

IBM Tivoli NetCool Configuration Manager

  • This tool makes the work more easy and transparent. We can monitor the whole by this tool.
  • This tool has best features like color coding as per the severity of the alert like P1, P2,P3 having the different color code.
  • Since, this tool is actually based on the color coding, it requires no additional training for the new users.
  • Its heart beat alert notification in every hour makes it more user friendly. This alert we receive every hour to know whether the tool is working fine or not.
  • A very user friendly and an essential monitoring tool.
