LogicMonitor

Prior to using LogicMonitor we used multiple tools to fit all our monitoring needs, with no individual tool being able to achieve that. After reviewing LogicMonitor against our other tools we found it could do the job of all these tools on its own. We then proceeded to consolidate our toolset into LogicMonitor migrating all devices away from our other tools and have had no problems since. As stated in cons, one of the current let downs for LogicMonitor is how strict the RBAC is. Some changes have been made recently to make this more flexible but one of the main things I think is needed which currently does not exist is to allow access to a limited set of data sources, as currently when you give access to logic modules the role will get access to them all.

New Relic

I appreciate that New Relic is easily integrated into applications for APM and infrastructure for monitoring. Our applications are Ruby on Rails apps and getting them reporting into New Relic is easy to implement. In most cases, it just requires adding the "newrelic" gem and updating the "newrelic.yml" configuration file. Just this simple addition to a project gives us an entrypoint to analyzing performance. We use the New Relic Infrastructure agent by default on all of our cloud based servers. We have this set up with Chef so we don't even think about it; we just spin servers up and go. Minutes later they're reporting into New Relic. We use Terraform to automatically create monitors so we can keep track of the essentials like core processes, disk, CPU, and memory.

Pros

LogicMonitor

  • LogicMonitor data sources allow you to monitor practically anything. If you can convert it to data, LogicMonitor can be modified to ingest and alert on it. There are a large number of out of the box data sources that cover pretty much everything standard you want to monitor, there is a large community of users who have also published their data sources and there is the flexibility to create your own. Data sources are limited only by your imagination.
  • LogicMonitor offers the ability to monitor a broad range of devices and environments with great detail and precision. We struggled to find a software package that offered the ability to monitor both our Cloud and on-prem environments, with the detail we were looking for and at the price that we were offered. We have grown by acquisition so we are in all the Clouds as well as running a diverse set of hardware and software environments and LogicMonitor was out of the box ready to handle a vast majority of our environments.
  • LogicMonitor customer support is very responsive and willing to work on any issues that we are experiencing. Their first level support handles most of our questions and is able to quickly escalate directly to the developers for any bugs that are discovered.

New Relic

  • New Relic lets you drill down into the nitty-gritty of your application, breaking down requests however far you want in order to inspect the performance of your application throughout the request lifecycle.
  • New Relic offers many integrations with other services and technologies, making it easy to get it set up and start using it.
  • New Relic offers many views and types of visualizations to help you understand what's going on in as much detail as you want to know.

Cons

LogicMonitor

  • It's not "easy", but it's the "easiest" of all the tools we've used
  • One of our main products, Ubiquit Unifi, wasn't supported out of box like others were
  • No integrations with IT Glue, AutoTask Configuration Items, Warranty Master or other MSP Tools

New Relic

  • Cloud-centric / OS-centric. There is no/limited ability to query metrics with an agent installed.
  • Insights-based queries (dashboards and alerts) are limited to 1000 (soon to be 2000) records and that doesn't work for enterprise scale.
  • NRQL is awesome -- except when it isn't. The replacement QL is more robust but is significantly more complex to learn.
  • No agent management tools in the platform. And, yes, you will want agent management tools after the first dozen or so deployments.

I have not yet found any similar product that offers me this range of features to help us keep our online service fast and reliable. Besides this, New Relic is constantly evolving by adding new plugins to emerging technologies and platforms. Server performance measuring features are a key point as our user database grows.

It's very good. One area for improvement is the ability to group large quantities of objects together more quickly or disable alerts for specific instances completely very quickly.Alert Tuning is one of the more complex, but entirely necessary parts of the product to use keeping me from rating usability a 10.

New Relic interface can be tricky to setup sometimes, especially on dashboards, but the overall usability is great. We also find particularly interesting the chart creation tools. There are no major issues that prevented us using any of their services.

I have only had to reach out to them a few times, but it has been a great experience every time. They do not have access into your environment until you enable support access, which is for a set amount of time. This is great because I know that my customers have data privacy unless there is a problem that needs to be addressed. When I am working on developing a new datasource they provide a sandbox account that I am able to do my work in. This allows support as needed in the sandbox environment so I do not need to allow access to production data for that process.

There are times I feel that the initial support is lacking. And in some cases the automated responses of not hearing anything are annoying if the reason why there has been no movement is because we are still waiting to hear back from NR support. So, i think they should loose the automation as it can seem disingenuous

The documentation was clear and concise; the only issue we ran into was custom application naming. Due to HTTPD mod_fcgid and the need for the application name to be set in php.ini (not in .htaccess or the virtual host directive) ... we had issues setting this up.

Alternatives Considered

LogicMonitor

LogicMonitor is head and shoulders above anything we have used before. Traverse was the most feature-rich, but the back-end was cumbersome and problem-prone. But it was not extensible, support was lacking, and product updates were inconsistent.

We had originally looked into CloudWatch to monitor our resources since we have our stack built in AWS, but found that it would take additional work to setup the dashboards, alerts, and details that we wanted to see in our reports. It was worth the additional investment for us to get the data we needed with less work.

Return on Investment

LogicMonitor

  • It is great the pricing model is very flexible so it is easy to scale up and down as requirements change and fluxuate. It is also simple (less than it used to be) so fairly easy to calculate costs - no complexity around interface counts or whatnot - just number of monitored hosts.
  • Very fast to deploy so it is easy to go from a problem one day to a solution the next day - proactively identifying issues instead of responding to end user complaints.
  • LogicMonitor added a killer feature (possibly to compete with Auvik) of configuration management. However it costs a fairly substantial amount just to turn it on whether you have one device or 100. I don't get it - I think a nominal fee per device would align better with the service and customer expectations of the product.

New Relic

  • New Relic helps us detect defects before our customers do.
  • New Relic helps us prioritize performance improvements. Engineers don't need to spend time measuring the latency of transactions themselves.
  • New Relic helps us notify the appropriate people rapidly when there are problems.
