The reality is that even though the paper isn’t obsolete is faster and more productive to create and share virtual documents. It also means you need the best software to view create and edit them.

Adobe Acrobat DC is a popular application provided by the massive software company Adobe. They allow for intuitive design and high-end capabilities.

What is Adobe Acrobat DC?

Adobe Acrobat is a collection of PDF-related software. Adobe Acrobat DC is a PDF editor and publisher. Not all editors offer the functionality to create custom PDFs. Adobe Acrobat DC can pdf from multiple formats like PNG, JPG, Doc, Docx, Xls, Xlsx, and HTML. You can also convert PDF to many formats. Users are also able to edit PDFs from any mobile device with their mobile app. You can edit text, reorder pages, and redact all in one interface. Anyone will be able to use it for digital signatures as well. It lets you track responses and e-signatures in real-time.

Adobe Acrobat has become a major stable for business and personal needs when it comes to working with online documents. This makes their cost especially important because they’ve become so necessary in daily workflows.

How Much Does Adobe Acrobat DC Cost?

Some of you that have heard of Adobe Acrobat may think there is a free version and that’s technically true. It’s only for looking, not creating and publishing PDF files. It’s called the Adobe Acrobat Reader DC and it allows you to view, sign, and annotate PDF documents. See more about Acrobat Reader here.

There is also another Adobe Acrobat software called Acrobat Export PDF. It’s only for special export needs like converting file types and making scans easier to search with optical character recognition. It is not built with capabilities for creating and publishing PDF files. You can learn more about Acrobat Export here.

If you want to actually create PDFs then you will need a version of Adobe Acrobat DC. There are two versions of the software called Adobe Acrobat DC and Adobe Acrobat Pro DC.

The difference between Adobe Acrobat DC and Adobe Acrobat Pro DC is the Standard has slightly fewer features. It’s the difference between them isn't massive but it can be significant depending on your needs.

There are differences with Pro. One important capability is Pro allows you to validate PDFs for digital accessibility. You can always meet the standards manually but built-in validation functionality can certainly help.

More noteworthy differences in Pro include

  • Conversion between file types. For example, turning images into PDFs for better search functionality.

  • Microsoft Project and Autodesk AutoCAD compatibility

  • Editing features while using mobile versions for iOS and Android

  • Add multimedia like video and audio

  • Special functionality with javascript

If your team needs advanced features to create complex PDFs then Pro is your best choice. The ability to add multimedia like audio and video can be especially helpful if you have a broad audience that may have vision impairments and hearing impairments. The capability to make more engaging presentations can also be a major feature.

If you don’t need mobile versions or the ability to add javascript then you’re not missing out. Standard is best for simple PDFs without a lot of dynamic content.

The main difference between the plans isn’t features because Pro and Standard are set in place packages. It’s the number of people using the software and what purpose you are using the software for.

The for Teams plans take into account the number of licenses being used. If you are going to be using 5+ licenses you can get a 7.5% discount on all your licenses. You cannot get the special discount for the Standard version only Pro.

Students and Teachers also get a discount for the first year and later years if they choose the Creative Cloud subscription. If they want just Adobe Acrobat DC then the cost is the same for individuals with no discount.

What Are Alternatives to Adobe Acrobat DC?

Adobe Acrobat has become a standard PDF solution for education, small business, and individuals. It can be especially hard to replace them and it doesn’t help that most of their services require expensive annual commitments. Software that meets your needs and budget without breaking the bank is ideal.

Microsoft Word is a pretty great alternative if you already have Microsoft Office installed. If you don’t have Microsoft Office 365 for Business then it’s not worth buying just for PDFs especially if you currently have your own team workflow software. It's an expensive long-term commitment like Adobe.

Microsoft Word is a great option because it allows you to create awesome PDF forms and files. You can insert images or shapes with custom formatting. Anyone can make a professionally designed document with their borders, colors, stock images, and artistic image filters.

You have the potential to create stunning brochures, flyers, and PDFs with Word. If you’re less design-savvy they also have a plethora of gorgeous templates for resumes, reports, and flyers.

You may not have the ability to add javascript, but the software will help you make the document accessible and warn you if there are missing elements like alt text. A Microsoft subscription is expensive so if you don’t already have it installed it may not be worth it for your team.

Microsoft Word is a super easy-to-use option. All you have to do is save the document as a PDF. Below is a video showing you how you can even convert a Word document on your iPhone to a pdf.

How to Convert a Word Documents to PDF in iPhone (Without Third-Party Tools)

Those of you that do have Microsoft Office can turn Microfost Excel and Microsoft PowerPoint documents into PDFs. You can edit images and colors in most of their applications, and you can even create art in Word.

If you’re considering a Creative Cloud becuase you want gorgeous PDF documents, but won’t use most of the Adobe applications you can first explore your Microsoft Office applications. Those of you that have never used the design aspects of Microsoft Word we have some video tutorials to get you started.

The first one is a tutorial for creating a professional flyer.

Create a flyer in Word that has an amazing professional look. It's not so hard!

The second one shows you image editing techniques in Microsoft Word.

Word Image Tools: Add Artistic Effects, and Remove Background

The last tutorial shows the professional painting capabilities people can actually achieve in Microsoft Word! It’s important to know that even if you can’t draw you can still create images in Word using shapes. The artist shows that you can use a drawing tablet (you can do the same with an iPad), but they also show you how to manipulate shapes to create art.

PAINTING in Microsoft WORD!? - It works so well!!

Another option if you don’t have Microsoft installed is Microsoft Online. Microsoft Online is free and you can convert files into PDFs and save them to your Mac or Windows computer. The only issue is the design capabilities will be more basic than in word but that won’t stop you from creating simple, sleek PDFs.

If you want to look at some free PDF editors/publishers we have a great article that details the features of some popular free ones right here.

One great editor is PDFescape. They offer a free online version that is compatible with most browsers so it doesn’t matter if you have a Windows or Mac OS. Their desktop however works oath the latest version of Windows only.

With the free online version of PDFescape, you can create basic PDFs, password protect ones with sensitive information, and edit text. It’s not as customizable ad Word or Adobe, but it is great for simple needs.
