What is Figma?

Figma is a design platform that aims to bring together powerful design features you already love and a more efficient workflow. Some features include:
  • A modern pen tool: Draw in any direction with Vector Networks. No more merging or needing to connect to the path's original point.
  • Instant arc designs: Design clocks, watch screens, or pie charts with the Arc tool.
  • Be expressive with OpenType: Tap into advanced font features to fully express the brand.

Figma's Autom Layout tool helps users spend more time iterating and less time moving things around.
  • Less manual resizing: Buttons can resize with their text and lists can rearrange themselves when items are moved around.
  • Stretch to fill: Auto Layout components can now stretch left and right (or top and bottom) for easier responsive design.
  • Design speaks development: Auto Layout’s padding, direction, and spacing settings translate directly into code, simplifying developer handoffs.

Its plugins help to remove manual, repetitive work, bring in data, and power custom workflows.
  • Plugins for everything: Stock imagery, flow diagrams, color accessibility, charts, and icons.
  • Designed for ease: A user that can build a website can build a plugin.
  • Private plugins: Organization customers can create and distribute private plugins within their company.

Create prototypes that are like the real experience

Figma helps turn static design files into an interactive experience—no coding required.
  • Intuitive build: Simply connect UI elements and choose your interactions and animations.
  • Interactions: Define subtle interactions, like on click, while hovering, while pressing a button.
  • Mobile-viewing: Experience designs in real life using our Figma mobile app, available for iOS and Android.
  • Advanced transitions with Smart Animate: Automagically animate similar objects and create detailed transitions.
  • Dynamic overlays: Create multiple layers of interactive content overlays.
  • Animated GIFs: Use GIFs to represent motion designs, video elements, and subtle animations.
  • All-in-one platform: Toggle between a design file and live prototype. Design edits appear instantly in a prototype.
  • Shareable prototype: Share a link to your prototype. View it anywhere with Internet.
  • Embedded commenting: Comment in a prototype. They carry over into the design file—so nothing gets lost.
Figma is available online as a SaaS, and it can be downloaded for WIndows, or MacOS. Figma is also available via a mobile app for iOS and Android.

I am one of many UX designers, and we use Figma in our organisation as our primary tool for designing all-new products as well as creating new features and improvements to exisiting products. As a team, we love having our core Design System within Figma, which relieves our Visual Designers from redesigning our layouts, and also ensures consistency across our many teams and projects. As a UX designer, I love to use Figma to organise notes, plot out user flows, explore new interactions and throw down quick ideas, building prototypes.
  • Design System makes life so much easier and brings consistancy across multiple designers
  • Auto Layout is amazing and reduces time alignment and spacing
  • I cannot think of any improvements to suggest
I find Figma to be tailored to web and app design, I have used it for both but I currently use it to ideate new products, features and experiences. It's so easy to throw down some ideas, turn it into a working prototype, share the prototypes or designs with colleages, recieve their input through commentings. Even having a spectator mode is well used, when someone is taking the team through their designs for feedback. It's a really solid and well-rounded tool. I have attempted to use Figma as a replacement for Adobe Illustrator, but I have not found an easy way to set the resolution to 300 dpi to adequatly export the images. Figma is not designed for print use, but, I have still found myself desirigin this functionality.

All our product designers use figma. It helps our designers build lo fi, hifis and mockups. Which ultimately goes to our engineers to build the feature/product. They use it for wireframing and coming up with multiple iterations. It also helps senior designers see and review features and collaborate with them to build a crisper iteration.
  • Realtime collaboration on a particular project where people added to it can view and edit hand offs as needed
  • Ability to save reusable components and having a design system with predefined styles and mockups ready to be used anywhere else
  • Ability to integrate into other apps like Slack
  • Better touchpad shortcuts to change between move, edit and comment
  • Instead of undoing changes, figma should have a history option or something like version control to roll back changes to a file
  • improve prototype experience on the figma phone app
If you have a clear sense of what you want to build, figma makes it easy to come up with a wireframe quickly to get you started on the first pass. It is able to so save design systems and color schemes. It can work great both in small and large teams of designer. The new dev mode makes it easier for engineers to use and develop

We use Figma to create high-fidelity mockups of our user interface, create the design system, share handoffs with developers and run prototypes to speed up the development process. Figma is easy to use and the dev mode allows quick inspection of components on the development side. Design is faster and easier with this tool.
  • Design selection
  • Design prototypes
  • Dark mode
  • performance wise, it often happens to slow down with memory problems
  • prototypes are sometimes slow to load
  • in prototypes, the top bar disturbs the prototype interaction
Figma is well suited when it comes to designing functionalities, creating components and reusing them, creating variants and editing the specifications of the component. Now you can also multi-select the same components in different frames. On the other hand, it is less appropriate when it comes to designing user flows, diagrams and other UX activities, but for that, there's FigJam that helps.

Our organization uses Figma for most of the design work. We use Figma for the majority of the design process. This can be from taking notes during discovery all the way to creating prototypes in Figma. Also developers are using Figma in dev mode in order to be able to easily view designs specs.
  • Lo-Fi Wireframing
  • Hi-Fidelity Mock Ups
  • Presentations
  • Note Taking
  • Design to No Code Website would be something that I would like to see done
  • Parent-Child layer organization
  • Image export to web image file
The collaborative feature as well as the incredible user experience has set Figma apart from its other competitors. Working at an agency with multiple design request and the use of various software, Figma has by far been our preferred and recommended software for multiple reasons. It allows for easy file sharing, developers can easily see designs specs in dev mode, and you can collaborate with other designers n real time.

We use Figma to collaborate on creative projects of all kinds. It's an all-in-one platform that lets our broader creative team work together with ease. Plus, Figma's comprehensive suite of design tools reduces the need for multiple software licenses, making it a cost-effective solution for businesses. We love how we can access Figma from any device— a laptop, tablet, smartphone, etc. This helps us get quick reviews in real-time.
  • Cloud-based access means we can use it (and get approvals) quickly, from anywhere.
  • It's real-time collaboration features are pretty much unrivaled.
  • We love being able to make edits in real-time and track changes so even if something is edited accidentally, we can revert back to a certain point in the project and restore it.
  • You can only use Figma when you're connected to the internet, so unfortunately there is no offline editing or access.
  • The version control, while it exists, could definitely be upgraded and more sophisticated.
  • It's not ideally suited for extra large projects like a comprehensive re-brand effort, for example.
Figma’s web-based application is particularly beneficial in a remote work setting. Figma excels in managing design systems and reusable components. Design libraries can be easily shared and updated across projects, ensuring consistency and saving time when working on large-scale applications or websites. While Figma offers basic prototyping capabilities, it falls short when it comes to complex animations and micro-interactions. Our designers have often complained about this limited capability. Unlike some other design tools, Figma's offline capabilities are limited, which can disrupt workflow during periods of connectivity issues.

Developing UI prototypes for testing and usability studies, analysis of varying user workflows, and alignment between different teams/stakeholders regarding the final product design. Primarily used for designing mobile apps and interfaces for health care providers and allows for screens to be shared with regulatory bodies when making changes and providing change rationales.
  • Allows for a UI design source of truth
  • Allows for exporting of actual UI to prototyping tools
  • Allows for fairly easy modelling of user interface workflows
  • Design control is challenging
  • Creating object instances
Figma is great for introducing new stakeholders to the project and all the high level workflows that a user is able to navigate in both a mobile application or desktop website. Brainstorming product changes is also a use case that is frequently seen in the team due to the ability to develop a high fidelity user interface. It has been a challenge pursuing the use of Figma flows as a design controlled version of a user interface.

We use Figma for all UI revamps, as well as FigJam to collaborate on work in our team meetings. The UX and UI team and the Content team work together in Figma on a daily basis. Figma is so easy to use and having visual mockups of content we want to publish makes such a difference, especially when we send it to other stakeholders in the business to review. People like to see the work we are doing in situ before it goes live, and Figma does just that. It allows allows me as a UX Writer to put the copy directly into the design in real time and make sure that the design and content flow seamlessly in each wireframe. I love using Figma to work with designers and couldn't imagine working without it.
  • Collaboration in real time
  • Presenter mode to show content in situ
  • Ability to have global components that update automatically across all screens
  • Sometimes aligning content and editing it (when it's in a purple square) can be tedious
  • Hard to track changes which can make version control difficult
We use Figma for virtually all instances where we want to update content on websites and other digital platforms and MFEs. It is extremely useful for the Design and Content to collaborate on together in real time, and also for other stakeholders in the business like Legal teams who want to see the finished product that they're reviewing.

We started using it for ad graphics design and now we use it for UI and UX design, as well as website and user flow prototypes. We needed a tool that was wasy to access for everyone involved and that was cloud based so it didnt lag.
The support department has started to use it as well for building flow charts because of the ease of use.
  • Prototyping
  • Website design
  • Storing graphics
  • Allowing teammates to work together
  • Downloading animations created
  • Compressing images in figma
  • Pdfs dont show up correctly when opened
Figma is definitely useful when different parties are involved in a single process. It allows teammates to edit and see in real time what others are working on.
It's also very helpful for editing images, and allows you to do almost everything in one place, instead of having to use more than one software for the same purpose.
As it is a cloud software, it doesnt lag or use your devices memory space.
The mobile version although could be better, since currently you can't really edit anything from your phone.

Mainly for creating prototypes for usability testing. Sharing static content with stakeholders is fraught with risks where they misinterpret or assume behaviour. Being able to rapidly create interactive prototypes and share them enables us to have a test platform, a vehicle to get feedback from stakeholders, and a way to communicate intent with developers.
  • Hifi concepts
  • Prototypes
  • Sharing of concepts
  • Version control
  • Export of resources
  • Comment threads
  • Sometimes setting up sharing permissions can be a pain
  • Variable and conditional logic is weird and debugging is a nightmare
  • Vector drawing is a bit quirky
  • Components don’t always behave how you expect
Figma is easy to pick up and get familiar with quickly for designers in any role: UX, UI and Content designers. We can keep our exploration work separate, until we are ready to collaborate and merge ideas. Components are good for maintaining consistency and encourage re-use. Creating realistic prototypes is straightforward for basic cases. Accepting user input in prototypes isn’t possible and this means turning to other tools like Axure.

We use Figma for our UI/UX team to create front end designs for various applications that we build and support and hand those over to our dev team for implementations. Our design team will also create clickable prototypes that can be presented to the business to showcase what we are working on and get feedback.
  • Easy hand off between design team and dev
  • They are always improving the platform
  • It is easy to use when actually creating designs
  • It's collaboration tools are very clunky
  • Navigating within the platform and managing projects is cumbersome
  • Difficult for our business users to just open files and start viewing them and asking questions
  • Can't use my mouse to scroll to zoom in
If the person asking was a developer or someone from UI/UX who needs a tool to support their roles in the software development lifecycle, I would recommend Figma without a doubt. If someone is looking for a design collaboration tool to bring in business stakeholders to the software development lifecycle, or even as a collaboration or modeling tool to be used by just the business, I would tell them to look elsewhere.

Figma has proven to be an invaluable tool for me and our product management team, especially for ideation, prototyping, and task management. FigJam allows for seamless collaboration across teams, making the brainstorming process highly efficient. The prototyping capabilities are robust, enabling quick iterations and real-time feedback internally and from our customers. Additionally, Figma is the tool I use to create artifacts in our task management software to act as our source of truth, which is essential for SOC2 compliance, ensuring all project details are well-documented, enhancing overall project management and communication.
  • Working with customers to understand user flows and interaction
  • Brainstorm use cases and user flows as they pertain to user persona
  • Create and access design components for quick prototyping and iteration
  • My design system has gotten messy, better ways to clean it up
  • More interactive way to work with cohorts with the goal of improving design across app
  • Documentation for better use cases on how to build types of components
Figma is well suited for my needs, here are a few reasons. When you need to quickly mock up the design of a new feature for our enterprise application, Figma allows me to create and test prototypes rapidly. This is crucial for gathering user feedback early and iterating on the design before development begins. Other things Figma is well suited for are maintaining consistent design across our application, and enabling a distributed team to work together simultaneously. Something that Figma doesn't do is advanced code generation, specifically within VisualStudio.

We use Figma at our Company as a design collaborative tool in all stages of our design processes, in creating researches, to ideate and brainstorm about new features and prototyping (low-high fidelity prototypes) or maintaining complex design systems. There is also a possibility to creating diagrams using Figma jam files, to showcasing and improving Information Architecture, or to quickly draft User flows.
  • To organize data
  • To building a design system
  • Creating different prototypes
  • Creating Interactions and motion designs
  • Adding an option to work in “private-mode” making it possible to “hide” your work in early steps of ideations. Sometimes it feels wrong when colleagues are starting commenting on design decisions in very early stages, unnecessarily.
  • Adding notifications if the Figma file starts to be larger and heavier to load about suggestions to keeping the file structure more tidy.
  • Constantly trying to prioritize all the functionalities and keeping the app intuitive to use.
Best suited app for collaborating on a project and especially for creating prototypes. There can be issues unfortunately when taking care of more complex design systems, sometimes it needs time to load the whole project, which can be stressful to observe, not knowing if the project will be loaded successfully or not.

We use Figma for our design work, along with Photoshop, as well as for Figjam boards for internal processes and workflows, and for client review boards since it is such a friendly platform.
It helps us keep our internal and external designs all in one place, accessible by all, which is huge.
  • Highly collaborative in all aspects
  • Allows multiple types of share settings, which is super helpful with client-related items
  • Components and Google Sheets integration makes variation designs efficient
  • Having folders within projects would be helpful
  • Ability to merge cells in Figjam board tables
I think it's great for any marketing agency that does any type of design that needs collaboration across team members/multiple teams. I'm not sure what it wouldn't be suited for in the design realm - there are things that need to be done in other tools before bringing them into Figma, like Photoshop, but for most things, this is the perfect tool.

We use Figma for everything from prototyping UX workflows to creating high fidelity design systems. In addition to our design team, we have our software developers, marketing and third party contract designers all working within our organizations design system. This ensures our entire team can collaborate in one platform together.
  • Multi team collaboration with different user roles
  • vector editing/design
  • prototyping
  • responsive design
  • simpler ways to edit design systems and update across designs
In my opinion, no other design tool of this nature allows a designer to do everything from UX workflows like user mapping to final UI and prototyping all in one software as seamlessly as Figma.

We are building a new advertising experience and technologies which aim for both consumers and business users of ads platforms, hence, the problems range from what the user experience is with advertising - from formats to density to placements - and advertiser experience of creating/ targeting/ scheduling/ analyzing campaigns.

We use Figma to mock external experiences and UIs for internal users and advertisers
  • prototyping for UX research
  • ability to have multiple options within the same file, keep organize, archive
  • Figma for Produc managers - often when I had to mock something as a product manager, I wish there are easy to find templates and starting points
  • tooltips
Figma is a gold standard in the industry and has a lot of advance tools attractive to UX designers and professionals. It allows to create simple mocks and advance prototypes.

However, for non UX professional I find it less intuitive and hard to use compared to my previous experience with photoshop. As a Product manager, creating some quick mocks is not that quick and the tool is just too advanced and not intuitive. As PMs we are may nit be the target users

  • Real-time Collaboration
  • Prototyping and Interactive Design
  • Offline Mode
  • Performance with Large Files
Scenarios where Figma excels:

Collaborative Design Projects: Figma truly shines in scenarios where collaboration is key. Teams spread across different locations or time zones can work seamlessly in real-time, making it ideal for collaborative design projects. Whether it's brainstorming sessions, wireframing, prototyping, or creating design systems, Figma's live editing feature ensures everyone is on the same page.

Scenarios where Figma might be less appropriate:

Offline Work: Figma's reliance on an internet connection might be a drawback in situations where a stable internet connection isn't available. While Figma does offer some offline capabilities through a desktop app, its full functionality is dependent on connectivity.

We use it for everything. From designing high fidelity screens, prototypes or mocks ups and even presentations. It is such an amazing tool, giving you a great deal of control and helps you think clearly and bring to life what's in your mind. It is fantastic.
  • Build out presentations
  • Design screens
  • Design mockups of concepts
  • File sizes when you export frames as a PDF or JPG. They are often way too large.
It is incredibly flexible and can be used a great deal. Probably not fantastic for early stage thinking. There are better tools when your thinking is still fuzzy, but once you get clearer, it is great to dive in and start to bring to life what is in your mind.

We use Figma for UI/UX designing and prototyping. Our business uses Figma as part of the product development cycle for new software. Our UX designers use the tool to create initial wireframes, finalized UX designs and prototypes. The designs are then used by our development teams to develop the frontend UI for our product. Verifiers also use the designs verification of the frontend development.
  • UX designs
  • Prototyping
  • Collaboration
  • The ability to create components so updates can be made once instead of multiple times
  • Requires time to learn how to use it
  • Can be difficult to correctly layer objects
Figma is great for UX designs and prototyping. The tool is really helpful for frontend developers and verifiers too.

Figma is not great for quick workflows or brainstorming activities. Miro is much better suited and easier to use for the common user for this type of task.

I use Figma mainly for converting the product requirement document to actual designs and prototypes that will be reviewed by the product management team and handed over to the development team after going through the necessary iterations and final approval of the product team. I also use the prototypes with users to test the product before actually jumping into the development.
  • Creation of Interactable Prototypes
  • Component Management
  • Commenting feature
  • Exporting Screens
  • Language localization
  • The software lags with large project files
  • Organization of documents
As a UI/UX designer, I like the ability to create various prototypes and conduct user testing to determine the optimal design. You can also use the 'Dev Mode' feature to develop in Figma itself where you can access advanced inspection capabilities and more codegen languages. This can really reduce the time to market.

We leverage Figma for across the new product development process—to conduct early state concept testing and resonance testing and mid stage user testing on product prototypes. It's proven invaluable for deep design work such as this.
  • Prototyping
  • Defining user flows
  • Building marketing collateral
  • Gaining concensus on high level future state visions for an experience
  • Licensing has a high price point, so not everyone on our team has access to all functionality
  • Client or cross-team collaboration is limited and challenging if everyone does not have a license. The comment-only functionality for non-licensed users is severely limiting and a high point of frustration.
  • The Miro plug-in is useless. I was disappointed to find that it essentially just imports a static, un-editable image. It also does NOT update the image import automatically when a change is made to the original Figma file - extremely frustrating. I still can't understand what the purpose of this plugin is or the value it delivers.
  • Not user-friendly or intuitive for folks who need to use Figma, but whose role isn't primarily design-related. Requires significant time investment to really understand, navigate, and utilize the UI.
Well-suited to design-heavy artifacts (prototypes, wireframes, visual concepts, marketing collateral); Not suited to text-heavy artifacts or documentation that requires a high level of collaboration with clients who may not have a figma license (comment-only feature is severely limiting) - Miro or ppt would be better tools for these purposes.

I use Figma together with my Product designer to create full fledge designs, high fidelity mocks, as well as any collaborative workshops with stakeholders and users. We're solving a problem of collaboration where Figma provides the tools needed to work together and brainstorm with multiple users, as well as quickly create mocks for our engineering teams and marketing decks.
  • Collaboration tools
  • For a beginner (like myself) this tool was simply enough to get started on "easy" UI changes like copy, which helps my designer a ton
  • Presentation feature where we can add functionality to the designs could be a bit more simply to use since this is typically led by product or marketing at my organization
Figma is a great tool for our product design team as they tend to create mocks and full fledge designs that we use for our engineers to build the product. It is very simple, in a good way, to address comments and questions through its collaboration feature. Being able to collaborate with multiple users and easily address any comments and questions is probably the most important thing for our organization.

Our design team uses Figma to create interface designers, and interaction patterns and to create a component library that makes product development easier with our development team. We also use it to create prototypes for user testing and validation. We have also used it for process flows and co-creation as a team.
  • User Interface Design
  • Component Library Creation and Management
  • Prototype creation
  • Non-designer collaboration; the controls are very design-focused so it's not as intuitive to use as Miro or other tools
  • Video conferencing; I think FigJam is ok, but it definitely needs some refinement
It's well-suited for designers to work collaboratively with product teams. It's much more digital product-forward than the competitive Adobe products. Figma eliminated multiple products and tools for our organization. Figma can be hard for designers to co-create within it though, so we still use Miro for the majority of our product team collaboration tasks.

I use Figma for two main cases. The first one is to create service blueprints; So these are diagrams that explain a service, process or digital experience and shows all the different layers. The other thing I use Figma for is to create prototypes. I design the screens in Figma and then take those prototypes into research platforms.
  • Organizing screens
  • Exporting screens
  • Sharing documents with stakeholders
  • Notes; hard to edit, organize
  • Formatting things in FigJam can be difficult
  • Overall organization of documents
Figma is great if you know exactly what you want to design. If you have the libraries already set up and every visual decision has already been decided. If you want to do like some more exploration with visuals it's a little hard to do that. It's hard to create different kinds of shapes and gradients.

As a UIUX Designer, we have tried plenty of software to create our solutions according to the user needs, and we prefer using Figma because it gives you plenty of tools to create from simple wireframes to complex interactive prototypes, and even to create complete design systems and personalized components. We can have everything integrated and well organized in Figma
  • Wireframes
  • Mockups
  • Interactive Prototypes
  • Design Systems
  • it could be great to have a better way to organize the files and the internal frames
  • It's a bit hard for a non designer to jump into Figma due to the variety of tools and options that are shown
  • It's hard for a designer to use autolayout
  • It could be good if we could have a easier way to handle components
We have used Figma for a variety of activities like sketching, initial ideas, wireframes, mockups and interactive prototypes, but it's hard to create animations and not worth it, because it can be very hard for the developer to implement or mimic them in production, so, for that specific topic, we prefer other tools to create them.

Figma is used throughout all of our product teams and is the best collaborative design tool we've ever used! We could integrate our design system, so now it's super easy for our product designers to set up different projects and drafts all in one coherent look. We use Figma mainly for product design of our digital projects.
  • Collaboration
  • Ease of use
  • Prototyping
  • Super fast delivery times
  • Export option
  • Licensing
  • Versioning can get tricky
Very well suited for all digital product companies, that have to design & test their products. We're at a point where Figma is considered the gold standard of digital product design and rightly so. We use it on feature level, to build different versions and iterations of a solution. Those drafts can then be user-tested and directly implemented afterwards by our product team. Therefore, turnaround times are super fast!
