PitchBook is a highly valued SaaS data and research platform for organizations specializing in private capital markets. Users rely on PitchBook to gather essential information about specific startups or industries, including multiples, deals, and financial performance of competitors. This comprehensive software serves as a vital tool for sourcing investments, performing due diligence, and business development. It allows users to stay informed about bankable market trends based on decisions made by PE, VC, and fund managers. By providing quality data and saving time in capturing relevant information, PitchBook is particularly valuable for researchers creating financial models for portfolio companies. It helps validate assumptions and provides the most updated information available. Furthermore, PitchBook offers easily exportable datasets for custom analysis related to private capital markets activity, addressing the problem of limited sources of reliable information.

Valuable Resource: Users have found the platform to be a valuable resource for accurate and aggregated industry information. Many reviewers praised its ability to validate assumptions and keep them updated about their industries of interest.

Helpful Data Analysis Tools: The data analysis tools and workflow management features were noted as helpful, particularly for SMEs and startups. Users appreciated the ease of accessing trusted news, data, analytics, and insights.

Beneficial Industry-Specific Metrics: Reviewers have seen great value in the availability of industry-specific metrics and analytics on the platform. They find this feature extremely well-researched and critical for making informed decisions, especially regarding M&A activities.

High Cost of Accessing Information: Users have expressed concern about the high price associated with accessing information on the PitchBook platform, especially for smaller firms. They suggest revising the pricing structure and offering more affordable options to cater to a broader range of companies.

Inaccuracy in Early-Stage Company Data: Some users have mentioned that the accuracy of information provided by PitchBook, particularly for early-stage companies, is not always reliable. To enhance trustworthiness, they recommend clearly indicating when the data has been audited by a third party.

Challenges in Navigating Platform: Users have found it challenging to extract precise insights from the vast amount of available data and resources on PitchBook. They suggest implementing a guided resource or tool to help users navigate and filter through information more effectively.

Users of PitchBook have made several recommendations based on their experience with the product. The most common recommendations are as follows:

  1. Perform a side by side comparison of PitchBook with its competitors. Users suggest conducting a comparison between PitchBook and its competitors to determine which platform best suits their needs. This recommendation highlights the importance of thoroughly evaluating different options before making a decision.

  2. Take advantage of customer service for help with refining searches. Users recommend utilizing the customer service provided by PitchBook to enhance search capabilities. This recommendation emphasizes the value of seeking assistance from the support team to optimize the user's experience.

  3. Double-check company data against a Google search. Users suggest verifying company information obtained through PitchBook by cross-referencing it with a Google search. This recommendation underscores the importance of ensuring data accuracy and reliability when using the platform.

These recommendations provide valuable insights for potential users looking to make informed decisions about utilizing PitchBook in their financial endeavors.

We use PitchBook to look for information for a specific startup or about a particular industry (i.e. multiples, other deals in the space, financial performance of competitors).

We also use PitchBook to validate the assumptions we use when creating financial models for our portfolio companies in the accelerator program. This information is extremely helpful since it is the most updated information (way better than reports that usually cover information from 2-3 years ago).
  • Provide the most accurate information about SMEs and Startups
  • Give aggregated industry information to validate assumptions
  • Keeps you updated about the industries you are interested by signing to their reports
  • Reduce the price and allow users to share licenses. It is really expensive for companies that are not investment banks to access this information. Maybe consider different tiers
  • Tell when the information has been audited by a third party. In some cases, the information may be wrong for early stage companies.
If you are a company or an individual that needs reliable information about SMEs or startups, this is the best platform for you to get this information in a very efficient way.

If you are just doing a basic due diligence to see active VC funds, figuring out valuations or companies in one industry, or just getting general information about an industry, it is probably better to get it from somewhere else on the internet. The reasoning behind it is that PitchBook is very expensive as opposed to other options out there.

  • Saved us from investing with an incorrect valuation (multiple times)
  • You need to pay per license per user. It is definitely expensive for a small accelerator.
PitchBook is by far the more reliable source for non public companies. This helps a lot in the entrepreneurial and Venture Capital space.

Other platforms may be better suited for other tasks that are not related to SMEs, VC, or Startups.

We used PitchBook for about 1 year, mostly on researching investment history to target Angels and VCs and comparable market valuations.
  • Data set of investments and acquisitions.
  • Contact information and key personnel.
  • Industry reports.
  • Expensive for small firms.
  • A good percentage of contacts bounce, so we need to use separate email list verification tools.
  • Most relevant searches were completed early on, not much use for us in ongoing work.
Well suited for larger enterprises and later stage investors, and those looking into companies at the Series A to B and beyond with more data in the system. It's less helpful at the seed stage.

  • Undetermined-- we just didn't see a big enough ROI as a small firm to justify a continued subscription.

We are always watching for companies to acquire. I’ve used PitchBook at another company for the same primary reason. The secondary benefits are tremendous, as there is much to be learned about bankable market trends based on what decisions PE, VC, and fund managers are making (putting real makers behind new deals) For us, we value PitchBook for the quality of the data, and seek to approach the right acquisitions based on data that would be far too time consuming to capture on our own.
  • Extremely well-researched data, critical to any M&A decision.
  • Customer support: real humans respond, and follow-up diligently.
  • High trust resource: provides private company information too, which is far more valuable/ harder to access than public.
  • The price could be lower. If you’re serious about investing, then the Price is not a hurdle. But if you want to watch market cash trends, there are other great choices at lower costs.
Best uses are M+A, fund managers, PE companies and VCs. The quality of both their data and their researchers/support teams is excellent! Also, an excellent strategy advisory tool for startups, even if it is a bit pricey.

  • A wealth of high data quality information where we can get an excellent 360degree view before making an investment decision.
  • High trust resource due to the quality of the research processes they use, and outstanding customer support.
  • Not simple to navigate/filter searches, but that is more due to how rich the depth of information is. Over time, it gets easier.
We actually use both. CBInsights we use more regularly for market capture, and PitchBook when we are actively seeking acquisitions.
