Community Insights

TrustRadius Insights are summaries of user sentiment data from TrustRadius reviews and, when necessary, 3rd-party data sources. Have feedback on this content? Let us know!

User-Friendly Interface: Users appreciate the SolarWinds Database Performance Analyzer for its straightforward and easy-to-understand interface. They find it intuitive and user-friendly, even for new users with minimal training.

Real-Time Analysis and Support: The tool's real-time analysis capabilities and support services are highly valued by users. They mention that it helps them promptly identify and resolve performance issues in SQL databases, such as errors, long-running queries, or system-blocking problems.

Wide Range of Supported Databases: Users find the extensive range of supported databases to be a valuable feature of the tool. It allows them to monitor and analyze the performance of multiple databases from one centralized interface.

Dated and Confusing User Interface: Several users have expressed frustration with the user interface, describing it as dated, confusing, and difficult to navigate. They suggest that the user interface could be more user-friendly and have a reduced learning curve. Some users also mentioned that the navigation can be unintuitive and sometimes tough, and that some items can be confusing to find again. Overall, improvements in the cosmetic aspects of the user interface are needed.

Lack of Reporting Flexibility: According to some users, there is a lack of flexibility in both dashboard customization and reporting capabilities. They feel that the reporting feature needs improvement to provide more options for customization and analysis. This limitation hinders users' ability to obtain meaningful insights from their data.

High Cost: The cost of the software has been a major complaint among some users, particularly when it comes to adding additional instances. These users mention that the licensing timeline needs improvement as adding new instances becomes cost-prohibitive during certain periods of the year. The high cost associated with using this software can limit its accessibility for businesses operating on tight budgets.

Users highly recommend trying the free trial and evaluating SolarWinds DPA before purchasing. They suggest taking advantage of the free demo and training resources provided by SolarWinds. Users advise implementing SolarWinds DPA for monitoring and analyzing databases, especially for those who are just learning. The software is also recommended for DBAs in small to medium businesses and for integrating with other SolarWinds products for better data analysis. Additionally, users suggest comparing it with Idera offerings for SQL performance monitoring and highlighting it to DBAs as they will likely find value in it.

  • It has allowed us to scale back on RAM, because if you have some long-running stored procedures that consistently flush your tempDB, then adding RAM covers up the issue, but doesn't fix the problem.
  • As I am only monitoring 3 or 4 servers, the impact it has on our customer base is massive because it allows us to fix the issue once and it be replicated across customer base.
  • the direct ROI is manpower. it replaces having to watch performance monitor 24/7.

  • We are a small IT shop. I have been the DBA for many years and am now both IT Manager and Senior DBA. I'm also a database application developer. DPA helps me to be an efficient DBA by alerting me to problems.

  • We were able to find the areas where improvements is required and had all of the information and details on hand on what exact indexes were missing or existed and didn't have some of the required columns included.
  • Stale statistics were causing the performance degradation and the dashboard had a pointer in the right direction.
  • Server storage was getting close to being full and SolarWinds clearly presented specific details that allowed the admins to react on time and add before the disaster has hit us.

  • The most important KPI for anybody who's responsible for a production database is uptime/downtime ratio. In the last few years, we made a lot of improvement in our environment. DPA served both as a tool to improve performance and the tool to confirm it. While in the past we were having at least one emergency a month that number went down to almost zero.
  • Compared to previously used tools the cost is not a big difference, while quality-wise we definitely see the difference.

  • In the past 4 years, DPA helped us to troubleshoot around 10 incidences of SQL server performance issue.
  • We normally have no performance issue on SQL Servers, those incidences are all we had encountered since we deployed BPA. The good thing is, DPA was able to provide some kind of help in every case.
  • With the help from DPA, we were able to resolve the issues quickly (normally within 5 to 10 minutes), and avoided shutting down the production systems during business hours.

  • Total requests to DBA team dropped several hundred percent after the rollout of the tool. Since the tool works so well, developers/managers/admins are requested to FIRST analyze by themselves, and only after their inability to identify or resolve the problem, promote to the DBA team.
  • Ease of implementation and upgrades combined with self serve monitoring, automated reporting, and alerts have all reduced valuable DBA team effort and time, allowing them to focus on more important tasks.

  • Database Performance Analyzer has enabled cost saving by reducing slowdowns or downtime due to database performance. Recently, following an upgrade to Oracle 12c, the DBAs were able to discover a pattern in poor performance that allowed a quick determination of the source of the problem. Though difficult to quantify, without this insight production would have been negatively affected for far longer and causing a loss of time and materials.
  • Proactive use of Database Performance Analyzer made improvements to in-house applications much easier by allowing us to quickly determine the bottlenecks and ensure that modified applications result in the expected improvements.
  • Database Performance Analyzer has had no negative impact on our business. It is always the first tool we turn to when there is a complaint or problem with database performance.
  • The custom alerting capability has enabled us to proactively respond to problems before they have become visible to the users or application. Other than database availability, all of our alerts are customized to provide quick feedback on areas where our architecture tends to have the most problems.

  • We have had developers make changes to their code that caused the software to be slower. We gave them the SQL that was causing the issue and they removed old records and sped up the system a good 20%.
  • It also helps us with server sizing to make sure we do not buy more hardware then we need. We had one company tell us we needed a faster server to speed up the software and we were able to show them that adding more server power would not fix the issue.

  • Time has been a big bonus as it handles a lot of monitoring for me and requires me to spend less time staring at Profilers.
  • Vendor choices sometimes conflict with DPAs licensing model. We now have three applications that require their own instance of SQL. If it's not solo on that instance, the vendor will not support it. This then causes us to cringe at licensing another instance of DPA to monitor one application that was poorly developed.

  • This tool drastically cuts down the time it takes to identify production impacting performance issues. This result improves the system up time to our customers, which in turn enables them to better serve their customers.

  • It has helped me to find some blocking transactions before people in the business unit noticed there was a problem.
  • It has also caused me to spend a lot of time trying to navigate the UI to find the info I need only to find there appears to be no way to get what I want.
