SolarWinds NPM Advanced Alerting

We use the alerts all the time. However, we noticed we have to customize the amount of time before an email is sent - sometimes we can have a virtual machine restart in less than 2 minutes, and at one time the alert for sending an email was set to 4 minutes. Believe me, everyone notices when someone reboots a server for patching and then no alert is generated - so you have to be cognizant of these issues and adjust for your environment. Sometimes we are unaware that a server is down and the alert goes out - when we get in the next morning, our email has been triggered, and we can attempt to rectify the issue before users suffer a loss of service.

SolarWinds NPM Advanced Alerting

I love the freedom that NPM provides with defining alerts! The granularity of alert configurations within SolarWinds has been a major asset for our network team. We have been able to finely tune alerts so that we receive what we need to see without having to be bombarded with unnecessary chatter. Receiving pertinent alarms is crucial to avoiding unnecessary distractions during the day and getting much needed sleep at night.

SolarWinds NPM Advanced Alerting

We create text message alerts to our phones anytime a switch goes down or comes back up. This alerts us immediately and allows us to instantly respond to issues to minimize downtime. We have customized several other alerts for email to notify us of less critical issues as well.

SolarWinds NPM Advanced Alerting

We have seen both pros and cons from the pre-defined alerts. For us, we found the Cisco wireless controller monitoring a bit flaky, so the built in alerts flooded our emails with false positive down alerts for hundreds of access points. Some of the other pre-defined alerts have shined a light on issues we didn't know we had, so that was quite useful.

We used some conditions to prioritize alerts from certain devices, which cut down on-call alert noise significantly.

We use many alerts and some are even tailored to email just one person for a small subset of equipment. We use SNMP to manage most of our environment and set certain triggers to notify us on both the webpage and via email.

SolarWinds NPM Advanced Alerting

My organization has greatly benefited from the ability to manipulate individual nodes for alerting/triggering conditions. All nodes take the "default" configuration until they prove that they deserve individual attention. I don't recommend changing thresholds, as SolarWinds has a great baseline defined. You will run into that pesky piece of hardware from time to time that exceeds "default" thresholds. Don't ignore the alerts, fix the issue!

SolarWinds NPM Advanced Alerting

Yes, the alerting system has been pretty self explanatory for the most part. There were a few cases where I needed to peruse the SQL server to find the proper fields, but for the most part customizing the alerts and thresholds has allowed for my company to generate alerts for many reasons outside of the norm that solar winds starts with.

SolarWinds NPM Advanced Alerting

We use this. It works well with the pre-defined alerts. We just had a discussion about an alarm that popped up from a pre-defined alert. We like how easy they are to apply to multiple devices and how easy it is to configure the alerts to be sent out. It just works easily.

We use alerts extensively, both pre-defined and custom. There are a LOT of pre-defined alerts, and most are turned off by default. None have any notifications defined; you will need to add that, and probably be selective about which nodes they are applied to.

We use predefined alerts. It simplifies the setup and enforces the standard across the systems. Meanwhile, it offers flexibility to customize alerts as needed.

This is where the capability is lacking. I get a hundred alerts a day that I basically just delete because they provide no insight.

SolarWinds NPM Advanced Alerting

The alerting feature is yet another must-have in your Network Performance Monitor installation! I can't count how many times I've been able to prevent far-reaching network outages because NPM alerted me to a device component failure. With the ability to read any provided device MIB, Solarwinds can be aware and watchful for anything that is configured. It even comes with some alerts pre-installed, which can be enabled at the click of a button.

All our alerts are customized. They start off as a simple predefined alert and are then fine-tuned for our needs. This way we have full control of what gets emailed or what gets added to the dashboard.

SolarWinds NPM Advanced Alerting

Our Customer Support team uses a number of SolarWinds' canned alerts on a daily basis. In fact, the alerts are so helpful that we are thinking about discontinuing alerting from our managed network provider and just going with our own SolarWinds alerts full-time instead. The alerts come with a help desk-style "acknowledge" feature and dashboard—we don't have a need for that feature. We just leave all alerts unacknowledged and let them reset themselves as the trigger condition goes away.

The out of box alerts were quite beneficial and able to determine issues during a proof of concept of evaluating the product. We continue to use and fine-tune the alerts as needed.
