Yubico - Good Options for Core Security, though Build Quality Could be Improved
Overall Satisfaction with Yubico
The business problem came from the requirement of MFA for remote users, where some were not comfortable using their personal cell phones to either receive text messages or install 3rd party verification applications. By supplying them with a YubiKey, we were able to achieve the standard of security we were looking for without requiring use of personal equipment.
Pros
- Secures access to web applications without needing cell phones or other personal devices.
- Widely accepted across SaaS providers making adoption easy.
- The setup process is fast and simple.
Cons
- I'd feel better if the key were a little more solidly built - it feels a little flimsy
- The design could also use a cap for the connection - I'm nervous having it on my key chain and users have mentioned the same concerns.
- There seems to be some cracks forming in the support for security keys which is starting to mitigate the usefulness across an entire ecosystem.
- Compatibility with Azure AD is a core requirement given we use Microsoft 365 for everything.
- It's very simple to set up and use making incremental support requests minimal.
- They are cheap to purchase and ship.
- Upholding security standards is critical given today's environment, and so it does that in a very cost effective manner.
- We have avoided more expensive hardware options (such as cell phones).
- Administration costs are virtually unchanged.
I liked the Kensington Verimark fingerprint scanner initially because it made signing into Windows simple and secured it within the household, but didn't like the additional complexities of setting it up and needing a driver. That would have required the IT support team to remote in and install it on all users which I feel was a cost that did not need to be borne with the YubiKey options.
