Aderant Handshake

The user of Handshake takes a certain amount of user computer literacy and the user needs to be resourceful. When building our site, I needed to google quite a bit. On the contrary, if budget allows, Handshake developers will do it all for you.

Lexis is really just best suited if you don't have access to Westlaw. Overall, it it does get the job done, but the user experience is not the best. Searches could be better indexed and relevant information (e.g. cases, statutes, issues, past searches) aren't as easily accessible. If you aren't doing a ton of additional research it is good for blue book citations

Pros

  • The main reason we got Handshake was to display visual gadgets for our accounting systems. We always provided spreadsheet type reports, but pictures and more engaging. Attorney gets a dashboard in real time of where they stand financially.
  • Additional use as FAQ's in different departments in the firm, that is, accounting, IT, and office services.
  • Knowledgebase - How to's and software.

Cons

  • Documentation is weak, but hopefully, since Aderant just acquired the company, that will improve

  • The app's search engine often won't load
  • Interface isn't as good as others
  • Statutes are hard to find

Alternatives Considered

None. Always need about Handshake's interface with Aderant, way before Aderant purchased them. Seemed like a natural fit.

We have access, and therefore use it as a secondary resource or use it when an integration is convenient. Lexis offers a lot of various integrations and apps but they all have various issues. I feel like they should concentrate on just having one solid research service rather than attempting to compete with Westlaw by having a ton of various offerings but not a solid platform. It's really not terrible and all the sources you need are usually there, but it can be a bit buggy.

Return on Investment

  • Hard to say, but ultimately putting knowledge in the hands of fee earners immediately it is positive.

  • Great for citations -- we have used it when writing briefs
  • Good as a backup or secondary resource
  • Integrates with MS Word
