Azure Data Factory

If you are just getting started and all your data is resident in the Azure cloud, then Azure Data Factory is likely to work fine without having to jump through too many hoops. However, in a hybrid environment (which is most of them these days), ADF will likely need a leg up. It works well for scheduling and basic scheduling/orchestration tasks, but the feature set is not at a level with SSIS (which has been around for 15 years so...). As ADF now supports deploying SSIS, it is also a good candidate if large amounts of your data are resident in the Azure cloud and you have an existing SSIS investment in code and licensing. We are using it in a hybrid fashion for the data warehouse and will slowly transition over to ADF as the feature set improves. We are also using it for cloud-native applications that only require supplemental data from on-prem resources

Azure Logic Apps

Azure Logic Apps are a very powerful platform once you get your head wrapped around what they can really do. It is best not to go into them thinking of it as the total solution. Think of them as small tasks that can be chained together by other Azure Logic Apps or other custom applications to create the whole solution to the problem.

Azure Logic Apps is a quite handy tool for your toolbox as it integrates very easily with other MS products. It also has a lot of features that allows it to be easily deployed and updated via JSON and can be torn down and brought back up in different accounts quickly.

We have not had need to engage with Microsoft much on Azure Data Factory, but they have been responsive and helpful when needed. This being said, we have not had a major emergency or outage requiring their intervention. The score of seven is a representation that they have done well for now, but have not proved out their support for a significant issue

Azure Logic Apps are backed by Azure and Microsoft. There is a wealth of information on the internet about both of these platforms. In addition to this Microsoft has a huge bush to using this platform and have offered many solutions and support options to the user. The only drawback is that it is a fairly new platform so the 3rd party information tends to be lacking.

Alternatives Considered

Azure Data Factory

I'd chose data factory because its very easy to use, its UI is beautiful, it's library for .net is very useful and it lives within the microsoft ecosystem.

Azure Logic Apps

Microsoft Logic Apps is much more enterprise-ready. With our company being more invested in Microsoft, this was a no brainer for us to leverage the tool. Its ease of use and scalability makes it a good choice for an enterprise workload.

Azure Logic Apps

  • Azure Logic Apps have had a great ROI as we have them automating tasks that used to be manual
  • Azure Logic Apps can sometimes take a while to build as you get "caught in the weeds"
  • Debugging can sometimes lead you down a rabbit hole and cost time
