Qualys Cloud Platform

It is well suited for environments that are looking for a solution that is top notch for vulnerability scanning, and is the most accurate at doing so. It would also fit environments that have a lot of endpoints to scan or like to have scanning done on an automatic basis. It is less appropriate in environments that want to use a platform right away, without getting training in how to use it, or reading documentation on the product.

SecurityCenter is definitely the juggernaut of the industry. You don't see many shops that are not using Nessus and or SecurityCenter. As a pen tester, I do not judge shops that use Nessus as a catch all, as there are a lot of things you can get hyper focused on and a tool like this helps you see things you may have missed.

Cons

Qualys Cloud Platform

  • Price tag
  • Have the license based on live IPs, not on entire subnets, so then you pay for the exactly amount of servers you have.

  • Tenable could make it easier to report on missing reg key.
  • Tenable can also make it easier to report on os level patches vs application patches.

Support

We really have not needed to use many of the support options for Qualys, as our set standards/routines for using the platform have worked well over the years, and there really haven't been a lot of problems with the platform. Qualys does offer good support documentation, that is very detailed and thorough. For other support channels, they have their own website, with links to phone/email/web support, that is also all available all day every day, 365 days of the year. They also have a good Community portal, which users of the software can ask questions or provide answers that will help other users of the platform.

Alternatives Considered

Qualys Cloud Platform

Qualysguard gave us the tools we needed that were benificial to our job without us having to do too much manual interaction such as with Nmap, Metasploit , etc. It was a very efficient platform that I would go to again.

We selected Tenable because is one of the best solution at the moment. Tenable is a powerful tool that we use for validation of our patching methodology. This is very helpful if you are only patching what the vendor deems as critical and then with this external validation you now have a new source for what is important. The user interface is clean and easy to navigate. Low false positives rapid signature release frequent product enhancement and updates.

  • ROI from Tenable suite of products has been well worth its cost.
  • Their pricing model has changed and they charge higher than their competitors but for the usage we have currently it serves us well.
  • Customization might not be what was expected but I believe we are using the tool to the fullest.
