Cohesity DataProtect allowed my organization to modernize our backup system away from tapes and into a modern data management system. No longer have to deal with ordering and configuring new media, swapping tapes in and out to libraries, and or data safe. All of our VMware workloads along with our unstructured data are now backed up via Cohesity. We were also able to retire multiple legacy NAS devices and move the data all into one Cohesity cluster.
  • Easy to setup and begin backing up all data types
  • Provision new file storage
  • Active directory backups
  • Allow for seamless upgrades to the software
  • Unified reporting experience
  • The 3rd party apps could see more development
  • Some of the view sorts default to 100 results vs all
  • EOS/EOL on hardware hasn't always been the clearest
  • Sizing process during acquisition could be streamlined
Cohesity has solutions that scale across a wide variety of organizations and a strong ability to scale, but some smaller organizations might not be able to absorb Cohesity at its lowest entry-level price points. For an organization with one or two servers and a handful of users, this product would probably be overkill.
  • It just works. Don't have to troubleshoot backup issues and no longer have to deal with tape.
  • Ease of updating to new software and or patching the system.
  • Cohesity's drive to add new features and functionality
  • Unified reporting console on storage and consumption

  • Several hours a week of admin time no longer needed to deal with tapes.
  • Many hours a year saved in that the admin no longer has to deal with LTO drives, LTO drive firmware, tape libraries, tape library firmware, a physical server connected to tape library, etc. Retired old legacy NAS devices that in some instances no longer had firmware updates. One system to administer and maintain.
  • Piece of mind. We replicate from our onsite cluster to an offsite cluster in the event of a DR event at HQ.
At the time of purchase, we had looked at Rubrik and StorageCraft (prior to Arcserve acquisition). Rubrik at the time seemed relatively comparable in terms of backup features but did not have the ability to provide unstructured data shares. Rubrik was also substantially more money. StorageCraft felt like a strong value play but didn't feel like it had the depth or breadth of Cohesity.

We are using Cohesity Data Platform mainly as a backup and restore and disaster recovery system for our clustered VMWare virtual environment. But also as a Platform for archives and other file services. The use case was clearly to replace an old Data Management, Backup, and Disaster Recovery platform. With Cohesity Data Platform, we have a great toolset for managing our fast-growing Data with one single User-interface
  • Fast and seamles Backups
  • Using existing interfaces like VMWare API
  • Restore of a complete VM can be done in really only a few minutes
  • SQL has still some bugs
  • Enineering needs sometime to long to react on bugs with business impact
  • Depending on support department, the quality is changing
Well, as given by the Name, Cohesity is great for Data Management including Backup, Restore, and of course disaster recovery. Also, Archive Services with different protocols are easy to use. There are many other features on the list and this list is growing from day to day, but we are not using them (yet).

  • The pricing options on Cohesity are very interesting/competetive
  • It's a rack space saving installation
  • fast restores = business quick working again
It's a little depending on where the support department is located and of course to whom you are talking. But in general, support is reacting in most cases in a very fast manner. The technical quality of the answers and solutions is very good. Very often they can advise also in areas that are not "Cohesity" specific but helpful (Like VMWare part of the installation etc.)
The Cohesity platform with its user interface is easy to implement, rack space-saving, and easy to use on a daily business basis. Backup jobs and policies are easy to define, multiple machines and objects can be grouped for the same tasks. In general, Cohesity makes backup admins' lives much easier.

Helios to the rescue!

We use Helios for the Ransomeware detection. Since we have enabled it, we had one time that it did detect, but after investigation, we found that it was an update to an app and deleted a bunch of temp files as a part of the update. We also use it for the marketplace. Great to have ClamAV in the marketplace.
  • Ransomware detection with machine learning.
  • Easy to install apps.
  • Great to see all alerts from all clusters in one place.
  • Has the option to use MFA.
  • Better written documentation on how Helios integrates with the clusters.
  • Have the Helios documentation available inside of Helios instead of the document site.
A feature of Cohesity Helios that I do not hear much about is the Security Advisor. This is a great place to see what may be done to secure your environment better. It has recommendations that a lot of admins would not typically use unless purposely pointed out and that is what the Security Advisor does. It makes it easy to secure your clusters and it detects if a setting was made on one cluster but not the other cluster. A great feature when dealing with a company's hope to survive a ransomware attack and their crucial data.

  • We have seen that the ransomware detection is working and that gives me peace of mind.
  • Helios has made it possible to see system trends in one location instead of having to log into several locations to see across multiple clusters.
Cohesity support is wonderful to work with. If your case is assigned to someone who is outside of your time zone, you are able to ask for it to be reassigned to someone in your time zone and no offense is taken; in fact, some of the support agents will call out that they see the time zone difference and if you want the case assigned to someone in your time zone, please request it be re-queued so that proper attention is given to it. This is rare in my experience and it makes it wonderful to work with them. I usually only request it be re-queued when I have a system down or severely degraded and need to work on it immediately. Great people to work with!
The connection is easy to do. The UI is similar to the on-premise UI so the experience is universal. If your account team is able to demo the features, it makes it super easy to use, configure and manage.

We currently only have a single on-perm cluster but use Helios to access certain features like the anti-ransomware, security advisor and Helios reports. We only use Helios within the IT department but being a SaaS service it aligns with our Cloud first vision and means we can access and manage Cohesity from anywhere.
  • Single point of management
  • Anti-ransomware reports
  • Now supports MFA
  • Reports have limited customisation
  • We’ve had some issues with Cloud Archive but Cohesity support have been exceptional in working to get this resolved
Cohesity is very well suited to protecting virtualised workloads and is a significant improvement over IBM Spectrum Protect which we’ve replaced by Cohesity. We also protect a Netapp workload and whilst the on-prem side works really well careful planning of protection jobs is needed if you’ll be archiving these to Cloud.

  • We use to spend at least one man day a week managing TSM this is down to minutes with Cohesity
Cohesity support are excellent simply put. Everything from opening cases to the professional speedy resolution provided by their engineers. I love the fact you can enable the support channel which means Cohesity can get on with fixing the issue without the need to babysit them on a Zoom call. Another really nice feature is the call home for any critical issues which automatically raises a case with support.
Cohesity Helios is very easy to use and the web up is simple to navigate and the main dashboard presents a very good and clear overview summary of protection status, capacity and other vital metrics. If you have multiple clusters you can get a single pane view of overall status which is awesome.
Overall Cohesity professional services like the rest of Cohesity are brilliant. We had some poor advice around how to carve up our Netapp protection jobs which has set us back but it has been acknowledged that a mistake was made by Cohesity and they promise for future engagements with new customers the lessons learnt with us will be integrated into their planning workshop for NAS onboarding.

We are a managed service provider (MSP) in the Netherlands that were the first adopters of the product in our country. We use it for backing up all our client's virtual machines throughout data centers in the Netherlands. We run the Fundaments Cloud and deliver Infrastructure as a service. Cohesity delivers a multi-tenant portal for the backups and provides a plugin for vCloud Director. It can backup thousands of virtual machines without scaling issues.
  • Backups of virtual machines with VMware products.
  • Scale-out storage, no more issues with running out of disk space with your backups.
  • Multi-tenant possibilities that help us solve the issue of letting clients be in control of their own backups as a managed service provider.
  • Further adopting managed service providers.
It's well suited when you need a scale-out storage system that scales with a growing organization. When running a small environment, however, with a few hosts and a few VMs for an office environment the investment is steep.

  • Positive to not have a separate license per VM but being able to give an all-in price for backup storage.
  • Having to learn a new product and growing with its development and problems instead of a longer-standing backup solution.
  • The product easily grows with your needs and is almost plug and play once it's configured.
  • Veeam Backup & Replication
We had issues with scaling in jobs and storage with Veeam. The scale-out storage they offered did not work for cloud-connect for example. When looking for a storage system that could do the scale-out correctly we came across Cohesity.
Support is quick and understanding and technically skilled in fixing your issues. The response time is good.
The user interface is very intuitive and gives a good overview of the status of your backup jobs. Its a full html5 environment which can be used in very browser and is available on every device through the use of private connections to the office. When going to implement Cohesity it is as easy as putting it in the rack and configuring your network. The environment does the rest. Once configured new nodes can be added by configuring them with the correct network.

We use it in a VMware vCenter environment with vCloud Director on top. Since the latest version vCloud Director is an official source for your backups. This means that resoring to vCloud Director is a posibility as well. This makes the multi-tenancy and self service capability for our users an easy to use function. It can be implemented as a plugin within the Cloud portal for users to leverage.

The path to vCloud Director support took a while but now that we are there I can give it an 8.
