Overall Satisfaction with VMware vCenter Server

vCenter was used as our primary virtualization hyper visor before we migrated to Hyper-V. We hosted about 500 VMs of different operating systems. Depending on how it is implemented, it can have tremendous ROI and can consolidate datacenter infrastructure.
  • Virtualize Servers
  • Virtualize networking
  • Consolidate infrastructure
  • The licensing can be confusing, especially when you don't necessarily know what functionality you might need.
  • Pricing can be prohibitive. Other vendors (Microsoft) are increasing market share with a lower price point.
  • Integrate cloud functionality so that workloads can seamlessly be deployed wherever you want.
  • It can have tremendous ROI depending on how you build your infrastructure. Some companies have 100+ VMs per host.
  • Costs can really add up depending on the functionality you use.
  • Support is getting very good. The company is feeling the competitive heat, and their support has really improved in the last year.
Vmware is still the leader, but Microsoft is catching up, specifically with Azure Stack. VMWare has to find a cloud partner (AWS) and implement a solution very much like Azure stack.
In a devops environment where self provisioning is needed, VMware can shine. In smaller installations, it can be very, very easy to get up and running (the same can not be said for Hyper-V and other competitors). The days of buying servers for single use are over, and VMWare is the top choice to virtualize.
