Actian DataConnect

If your company houses a lot of data locally and needs to free up space, the Actian DataConnect Hybrid Cloud Data Warehouse is an excellent solution for the price. It also allows for complex queries and even some basic data analytics, like Market Basket Analysis. Their free trial period is extremely convenient and you may discover more uses for it than you originally think.

IBM InfoSphere DataStage

DataStage is well suited for any size of company that's looking to move, transform, clean data and easily create data-warehouses that would help to make data ready to be presented for decision making. Data Stage would easily integrate with companies that use IBM DB2 as their main RDBMS.A scenario where it less suited could be cost. I have noticed IBM tools tend to be a little more costly than average.

Pros

Actian DataConnect

  • The large connector base for DataConnect is outstanding. However even when they do not have a custom connector, they have a web services Invoker which allows you to connect to any web services.
  • The underlying scripting language is Visual Basic-ish. Very easy to start.
  • The product has been around a long time, through multiple company acquistions, and still is a competitive player via pricing.
  • Support team is awesome.
  • Large user community.

IBM InfoSphere DataStage

  • Very reliable in handling data extraction, data transformation and loading
  • Flexibility in connecting to different type of databases, relational or non-relational
  • Great features such as parallel processing, hash handling, etc.
  • You can also take advantage of its FTP functions, and scheduling features if you need to.

Cons

Actian DataConnect

  • Sometimes the screen does not load- since it is a web based software, this can be seen as a reliability issue.
  • "Maps" can become somewhat complex, and between multiple developers this can be painful when sharing or explaining others' work.
  • The concept of macros adds flexibility in how to solve problems, but is a separate language and can take time to learn and master.

IBM InfoSphere DataStage

  • You must understand and know the algorithms, since the wrong use of them generates more time in processing.
  • Metadata. You need to develop with connectors, and taking all the Metadata from the menu, all the data that you complete manually, you can't track it.

Our development teams in the company can easily achieve and develop any ETL scripts that are needed to massage and move the data as needed. The company has also maintain this tool for a very long time making it automatic when it comes to ETL needs. We are currently trying to make DataStage our main and probably unique ETL tool

It could load thousands of records in seconds. But in the Parallel version, you need to understand how to particionate the data. If you use the algorithms erroneously, or the functionalities that it gives for the parsing of data, the performance can fall drastically, even with few records. It is necessary to have people with experience to be able to determine which algorithm to use and understand why.

Actian DataConnect is a great product for data storage, processing, and complex querying. It also has the added benefits of basic data analytics and data mining. We were surprised at how easy it was to perform Market Basket Analysis. I would highly recommend this system to a large business and encourage you to start a free trial period.

I believe that IBM generally has one of the worst and most complex assistance systems (physical and online) that exists.

Alternatives Considered

Actian DataConnect

As I stated earlier, DataConnect makes a head-to-head run against the others. It has advantages and disadvantages compared to the competitors. The choice really comes down to pricing and specific requirement needs for the project you are planning. Questions such as On-premise or Cloud, Security, and Specific Connectors available will drive your decision.

IBM InfoSphere DataStage

DataStage offers better integration capabilities without the need to write code manually. It also has a native ETL engine whereas MSIS requires a SQL Server. It has better integration capabilities with data quality, data profiling and data governance tools. The main drawback of DataStage vs. MSIS is pricing.

Return on Investment

Actian DataConnect

  • This tool was chosen prior to my arrival and was used to build three integrations. We have decided to switch to SSIS since we have licenses for it and it is a more common tool for ETL integrations.
  • It has been difficult to network with individuals that have experience with this tool.
  • Having been a part of a software package purchased, we have chosen to use a different tool for future integrations and plan to rewrite existing integrations.
