Actian DataConnect

The choice to use Actian DataConnect really comes down to pricing and the type of integration project you are performing, specifically with the requirements, whether you want the integration to be on-premise or in the cloud, can you install agents on your servers etc. For integration tools it runs head to head with its competitors.

Pros

  • The large connector base for DataConnect is outstanding. However even when they do not have a custom connector, they have a web services Invoker which allows you to connect to any web services.
  • The underlying scripting language is Visual Basic-ish. Very easy to start.
  • The product has been around a long time, through multiple company acquistions, and still is a competitive player via pricing.
  • Support team is awesome.
  • Large user community.

  • Connectivity.
  • Handling large numbers of records.
  • Varied partitioning algorithms.
  • Complementary packages of connectivity to applications, SAP, etc.

Cons

  • Integration Manager needs better scheduling improvements. Like dependencies, and not running a process again if the prior run is still running.
  • New connector development does not seem a priority.

  • You must understand and know the algorithms, since the wrong use of them generates more time in processing.
  • Metadata. You need to develop with connectors, and taking all the Metadata from the menu, all the data that you complete manually, you can't track it.

Because it is robust, and it is being continuously improved.DS is one of the most used and recognized tools in the market. Large companies have implemented it in the first instance to develop their DW, but finding the advantages it has, they could use it for other types of projects such as migrations, application feeding, etc.

It could load thousands of records in seconds. But in the Parallel version, you need to understand how to particionate the data. If you use the algorithms erroneously, or the functionalities that it gives for the parsing of data, the performance can fall drastically, even with few records. It is necessary to have people with experience to be able to determine which algorithm to use and understand why.

Alternatives Considered

As I stated earlier, DataConnect makes a head-to-head run against the others. It has advantages and disadvantages compared to the competitors. The choice really comes down to pricing and specific requirement needs for the project you are planning. Questions such as On-premise or Cloud, Security, and Specific Connectors available will drive your decision.

Compared to other ETL tools, the connectors really work, and makes the developments less complex because they facilitate the development of the processes. The maintenance of the processes is simple, since it is a very visual tool, and you can count on the technical documentation given by the tool.

Return on Investment

  • Our customer likes the consistent reliable integrations we have built so we [got] a definite return on investment.
  • Problems are fairly easy to handle and rework.

  • The connection with SAP has allowed us to extract useful data, allowing us to set aside costly processes such as ABAP, etc.
  • DataStage can load data wherever the data is . This gives you the facility to integrate data, create a DW with all the integrity that you need.
