Data Domain

Best suited for backup target, that's what it was designed for. The ingestion rate is very high, data exfil not so much. Doesn't work very well as a NAS (though functionally, that's what it is). It's very good at block-level deduplication of disparate types of data.

Pros

  • Reliable and easy to deploy backup solution with low administration overhead.
  • Fast backup solution with low impact on production systems as it backs them up.
  • Dedup and replication of backed up data between sites and with streamsnap very quick recovery on dr site.
  • Great customer support with quick response to changing demands.

  • MTree replication to another Data Domain system. The Data Domain performs the replication every 15 minutes, so our offsite data is never more than 15 minutes out of sync with production.
  • DDBoost provides a faster way to back up our data.
  • Data encryption at rest. This allows us to protect our database data.

Cons

  • Single file restore has always been an issue but hopefully will be added soon.
  • Physical server backup restoring has always been tricky but achievable.
Peter Dawe profile photo
  • Dedupe ratios on a per-folder or per-CIFS share basis would be nice, we can only see the ratio per partition (MTree). So it's not possible to see what ratio we get from Tivoli data vs vRanger data, for instance, because they're in the same MTree.
  • The VTL option seems inordinately expensive given it's only software. We held off a long time because of the cost, and only went down that road because the IBM iSeries is inherently unable to do a DR recovery from disk only.

DD has performed flawlessly for almost 10 years as our backup/recovery storage with offsite replication. Given its track record and great support from EMC, we're unlikely to look elsewhere any time soon.

Alternatives Considered

Actifio is quicker to deploy easier to manage and capacity plan with less components to keep patched.

We selected Data Domain due to its integration with our backup software. The Data Domain works well for what we need it to do.

Return on Investment

  • We have managed to scale up the size of our environment without the need for extra admin overhead.
  • Over 99% backups complete.
  • Solution is robust and quick to scale to meet demands.

  • Data Domain says 20+ hours per week when compared to using a tape library. Once the unit is configured it basically takes care of itself.
  • With MTree replication we no longer need to send tapes to an offsite storage facility.
  • Having a second data domain at our DR site allows us to perform recoveries from any of our replicated backups. We do not have to order and wait for tapes to arrive.
