Amazon CloudWatch

It is well suited for organizations already using a number of Amazon services, as most of these will integrate very nicely with CloudWatch. If you have detailed log retention requirements, it's quite nice as well since they make it easy to configure retention and export data to S3. The tooling for metric filters and dashboards are very customizable and sufficient for general monitoring but the UX is not the most friendly. If your organization spends a lot of time on business intelligence and performance tracking, you may want to consider a more targeted 3rd-party service.

SiteScope

SiteScope is definitely well suited in an HP server environment. It is also well suited for virtual server environments. It is also well suited for those who are happy with email and text based message alerting. It may not be appropriate in other environments where monitoring physical components is critical. Because HP SiteScope does not monitor certain physical components, it does fall short of being able to be a "one stop shop solution" in regard to monitoring. It is not well suited for those looking for logic in how alerts are sent and cascade to other people or groups.

Pros

  • Application Performance Management.
  • Error Management.
  • Utilization Management.

  • Custom monitors with custom thresholds, timing, polling, and many other configuration options.
  • Custom ways to alert and notify. Of course you have email and text message capabilities, but SiteScope also allows for specific messages and variables within those messages to be sent out so that your alert is data filled and you can know exactly what is going on and why you received that specific alert.
  • Monitor templates for quick and rapid deployment of one's standard set of monitors. Easy ability to "copy" and "paste" monitors so there is no need to re-create from scratch.
  • Scripting. SiteScope also allows for custom scripts to be called from specific alerting triggers. This allows for HUGE and POWERFUL customization and automation through SiteScope. You can easily have scripts that "take action" on a specific alert so you don't have to!!
  • Very easy to use in my opinion. Learning curve is very short and you can master this system fairly quickly for all of the depth of customization that it offers.

Cons

  • The interface is clunky.
  • The context sensitive help could be written more clearly.
  • I wish there were more options for arranging the dashboard interface to my specific needs.

  • Sitescope is particularly used for infrastructure monitoring. Other kinds of monitors cannot be set using HP sitescope.
  • Sitescope cannot have graphs like splunk which is why we have splunk as well which is an additional cost for the company.
  • We can't have a direct regex operations on data inside HP sitescope. We need to have the logs placed as a single log and then do that.

Alternatives Considered

Amazon CloudWatch stacks up against the competition pretty well. I personally like more customizable tools like Sensu and Graphite/Grafana to alert and visualize data but there are some pieces of infrastructure and some data points you just can't get without using Amazon CloudWatch. I usually use a hybrid of tools

Nagios can also do most of the things that HP sitescope can do, but HP sitescope is right on target when it comes to infrastructure monitoring and also cost effective which is why we selected HP sitescope. We also have teh iPhone and Android apps which are very useful for monitoring on mobile devices as well

Return on Investment

  • CloudWatch is a great tool for cloud infrastructure monitoring and alerting. Currently, there is no good alternative in AWS.
  • For an SRE organization, it has great value and ROI.
  • Just imagine that you can set 10-second or 30-second period alarms on your EC2 infrastructure and it would raise alarm for CPU or memory utilization or if the service is not responding. This kind of service is a must-have for engineering organizations.

  • Checking processes using a ps command and other indexing steps is very expensive in splunk.
  • Infrastructure monitoring is no more an issue for our company after getting HP sitescope.
