It all depends on the restrictions of your customers. If the customer gives you carte blanche to manage hosting resources, AWS is an excellent alternative for almost any scenario. If on the other hand the customer has its own infrastructure they want to use, AWS is probably not the best alternative. Given the approach that we use IaaS, AWS covers 100% of our needs, and we do not have the budget or resources to maintain physical servers.

Cons

  • When connecting up EC2 and RDS it was a bit difficult, but that was a few years ago so the process may have improved. I think Elastic Beanstalk addresses this issue.

I would gladly rely on AWS for any large-scale application deployment. For prototyping and small-scale applications, a more heavily managed environment on top of the 'bare metal' virtual infrastructure, such as Heroku or Elastic Bean Stalk, is probably a more productive approach in most cases

Easy to use/learning curve. If you are new to the use of cloud storage, AWS is your entry point. If you have experience in that field, AWS is the way to go.

Performance

AWS does not provide the raw performance that you can get by building your own custom infrastructure. However, it is often the case that the benefits of specialized, high-performance hardware do not necessarily outweigh the significant extra cost and risk. Performance as perceived by the user is very different from raw throughput.

Alternatives Considered

Heroku doesn't give me a level of control I would expect.Rackspace just sucks in all sense.

It is a powerful tool with smart intelligence. The drag and drop feature makes my work easy. The tool has great connecting support which is the best reason to use the tool on a daily basis. Powerful functionality with designing and implementing APIs. Hosted on public IP.

Return on Investment

  • AWS is actually the only hosting provider I am using now. It solves all my hosting needs.

  • So far using MuleSoft Anypoint Platform will give you more profits in terms of compressing the timeline and project resources.
