Amazon Web Services

In my opinion, the more a company uses the web for media and broadcasting the more of a need they have for Amazon Web Services. It's great for storage and organization along with making things simple to upload and even simpler to grab an embed link. My company goes through changes every year or two but this is one thing that hasn't changed!

Pros

  • I love how clean the S3 interface is as well as being well laid out and easy to organize. It's simple and effective and allows me to do my post-weekend tasks easily and quickly. I'm a nerd for organization and this software hits the spot! I honestly don't have more to comment because it's not complicated, just a few clicks and violá!

  • The Anypoint Exchange where there are huge number of connectors to connect to n number of external applications.
  • The API management stuff, securing and deploying a API(webservice) via client id and client secret.
  • The various policies that we can use to restrict access to our API like rate limiting, Quota etc.

Cons

  • I'm afraid you're going to have to go somewhere else for improvement suggestions because I have none!

  • The UI can be a bit difficult to navigate for beginners, who are not used to Anypoint platform
  • Support for node.js that a leading market competitor Google cloud's Apigee has
  • The trial is only for 30 days, which should be extended to atleast 60 days which i feel personally is good for developers to learn the product

Support at AWS is great! The cost is low. Their business model is sound. They tend to benefit us.

Easy to use/learning curve. If you are new to the use of cloud storage, AWS is your entry point. If you have experience in that field, AWS is the way to go.

Performance

AWS does not provide the raw performance that you can get by building your own custom infrastructure. However, it is often the case that the benefits of specialized, high-performance hardware do not necessarily outweigh the significant extra cost and risk. Performance as perceived by the user is very different from raw throughput.

Alternatives Considered

A lot of companies are Microsoft users. It would be good if AWS would work closely with Microsoft. AWS had been working very hard in reaching out to different business verticals and making business cases for using the cloud. AWS's way of coming out with new services faster gives it an edge compared to other cloud providers.

Compared to Dell Boomi the API management suite of Mulesoft is much mature, however if its only about the integration , then i would always go for Dell Boomi, as there is no infrastructure setup that needs to be done from the developer's end.Apigee api management is as good as Anypoint platform if not better, but it doesn't have integration capabilities like that of Mulesoft.IBM App Connect not in the league of matured products like Dell Boomi,Mulesoft or Apigee

Return on Investment

  • Positive: Faster provisioning of infrastructure.
  • Positive: Lower upfront costs.
  • Negative: Integration of AWS to enterprise apps.

  • Our customer appreciated our work.
  • Our customer appreciated having a very solid production environment while not needing to spend money to maintain it.
