I personally evaluated each of these products and found Boardable was the best fit for our needs. Plus, none of these products could match the price for the features we wanted. I actually met with Boardable users and was able to ask honest questions and was pleased by the …

Less robust toolset than its competitors, but the tools available through Boardable should suffice for most users.

Chose OnBoard Board Management Software
We did our software comparison before the pandemic, so we might view things differently now. But for us, the customer service at OnBoard was the best and we thought it would likely be the best for our board, which has many people on it who aren't very IT savvy.

We stacked up [to] four options at the outset and weighed such factors as [the] cost and feel of the platform. I can say that each offered unique advantages, however, in the end, OnBoard's customer service seemed to be the best fit for us, and looking back on it for all of the …

Boardable
Boardable is definitely worth the cost. It’s extremely valuable and there are new tools and updates being released all the time. Their staff reaches out for feedback and is easy to reach. It is a great resource for managing our board meetings and being effective, supportive, and interactive for our Trustees. I never want to waste our board members' time and Boardable helps us deliver an outstanding and engaging board experience.

OnBoard
OnBoard is an adaptable platform that could be used for most meetings. It works perfectly to build an agenda and packet for board and committee meetings. It allows for easy RSVP to ensure a quorum at meetings. All users are able to easily view the packet and can even make notations of points they want to discuss during the meeting. OnBoard doesn't work well for detailed documents such as spreadsheets. Our company has a strategic plan and we cannot use OnBoard for that committee meeting. The size of the spreadsheet simply doesn't function well within OnBoard and isn't easily navigable. The same is true of certain financial spreadsheets.

Pros
Boardable
  • Organize and execute Board & Committee meetings through the "Meetings" which allows you to build your agenda, attach documents, create minutes, and send out a summary of the meeting once completed.
  • Provide a very versatile Document Center where you can archive all types of documents for current and future use.
  • Polls, Tasks, & Decision-making features. These tools allow for broadcasting to members at large or to committees important information to be acted upon. It also keeps a record of responses.
  • Reports--this is an area we are just beginning to appreciate since it provides overviews of board member engagement and progress made within committees and the board at large.
  • People Directory--an invaluable tool for orienting new board members to current members as well as allowing for board members to contact each other.
  • Goal Setting: this is a tool we are just starting to use. It allows for the tracking of progress for board projects and/or fundraising.

Cons
Boardable
  • Meeting scheduling can be wonky with polling for a date
  • A lot of the most valuable features are at a higher price point beyond the basic package.
  • Opportunity to improve the minutes builder

OnBoard
  • Currently, you cannot block an entire group from a topic; you need to block attendees individually.
  • it would be nice to indent a section by using tabbing.
  • the added button for "save changes" in each section tends to slow down progress; edits used to be saved automatically and tended to be faster.

If it was solely up to me it would be a no-brainer, however, it has to be a board decision.

OnBoard
I couldn't imagine us doing our business without OnBoard [Board Management]. It has become the way we communicate with our Board and run our meetings. Frankly, I have no desire to go back even when we are meeting in person to paper binders for each board member. It truly has been a blessing coming out of COVID for us.

Usability
Boardable
Boardable is very user-friendly, easy to manage, and building agendas and setting up meetings is functionally easy.

OnBoard
OnBoard is extremely user-friendly. I believe many individuals could begin using it without instruction just by clicking and looking around. It is very intuitive and the setup makes sense. I have older members on my board and they can use OnBoard with no issue and no training beyond an initial overview. During the pandemic, I've had some new board members easily use it without instruction since we weren't able to meet in person for an overview.

OnBoard
I haven't needed to contact OnBoard customer support many times because it's user-friendly and functions as it's supposed to/sold. On the occasions I've contacted customer support, they have promptly answered the phone or my email. In one instance, a board member couldn't access OnBoard prior to a board meeting and customer support was able to resolve the issue in the 10 minutes prior to the meeting. In another instance, a board member wasn't able to get the system to recognize all answers to a completed survey which prevented a compilation of results. Customer support viewed the member's screen and ran an error log to figure out the issue.

Implementation Rating
Boardable
Boardable provides ample videos, information, and support to enable new members to learn how to navigate the platform. However, not all members are motivated to learn a new software system. Lessons learned with onboarding new members is to do a Spotlight meeting with them that utilizes as many of the popular features our board uses so that they shorten their learning curve. As with anything new, "practice makes permanent!"

OnBoard
Implementation was easy and I was able to do it alone without OnBoard customer support, although customer support assistance was offered and available. The platform is very user-friendly and doesn't require assistance to implement in my opinion. The biggest hurdle is getting invitees to access the invitation email and set up their login.

Alternatives Considered
Boardable
The main issue is this platform is designed and geared toward nonprofits vs. adapting a for-profit board portal. The second is the price point, while it has gone up significantly, is still in line with nonprofit budgets.

OnBoard
OnBoard is more user-friendly. It is very easy to navigate from an administrator's standpoint as well as for the end-user. I received compliments on a regular basis from our board members and how grateful they are that it is so easy to use. They also love having the Resources where all of our important documents are located. Other tools that I have used were very clunky and hard to navigate and the cost was greater higher.

OnBoard
  • It's helped maintain board and committee involvement in the nonprofit since the start of COVID
  • It has allowed our meetings to go virtual with little effect on workflow
  • It allows us to better track needed association materials than we have in the past
