Kermit is a SaaS solution for hospitals to manage their knee, hip, spine and cardio implant spend built on Mendix. Kermit is the second business where I've used Mendix; the first was for custom application development of a customer billing application in the logistics industry. Our current Mendix application supports our hospital customers by analyzing vendor invoices being created by implant utilization in the operating room, but prior to their arrival in purchasing for payment. Kermit informs hospital supply chain and purchasing about the accuracy of invoices through price audit and contract compliance business and clinical rules. Kermit also categorizes all implants used and we feed the audited and categorized data set to another third party business intelligence tool to create data visualizations and analytic views. We commercialize the Mendix app by charging a subscription fee to our customers for access.
  • Mendix is a good solution for those that have a business process and distinct workflow that can be replicated by custom application development, especially for those building a startup business or just getting started with application development for internal solutions because of its "low code" environment.
  • You will find that developing on Mendix will cost between 40% to 60% less than traditional development because the environment doesn't require highly specialized technology experts to code the application.
  • Mendix lends itself well to an Agile development methodology and SCRUM. The platform allows for iterative, rapid development. With Kermit, we release updates weekly and can rapidly prototype, test and deploy anything from bug fixes to new features.
  • Because Mendix is a platform as a service, your team can concentrate on your niche and business expertise rather than adding a group of IT staff to manage hardware and software infrastructure
  • Mendix would be well-served to build a roadmap for the traditional developer to move from hand-coding to the Mendix app platform and their Developer app environment. When we had to replace a lead developer, we had some hiring challenges looking within the traditional custom app development skill set for new people. Hard core developers typically see platforms like this as a "less-than" solution and not a true development environment.
  • Mendix is somewhat mature in Europe, but in its infancy in the US. As such, it can be very difficult to find experienced Mendix developers in the US. A number of the experienced developers are managing their own consultancies rather than being available for full time employment (probably because it is far more lucrative for them). We had some success in hiring someone with basic custom app dev skills and training them on Mendix (4 months), but have also had some failures in this area.
  • Upgrading to new full release versions of Mendix has been an issue for us because we have developed a number of detailed workflows and customizations to other developers' widgets from the Mendix App Store. At each major release, we need to carefully think about and test for issues prior to and after migration.
  • Amazing solution for internal custom app development to solve a business workflow problem (automation, data collection/storage/retrieval) where little to no budget exists and few technology resources exist, as long as the business problem is well-defined from an engineering and workflow standpoint.
  • Beware of commercializing your custom application as a SaaS offering. In doing so, you will need to upgrade to a commercial license and have a sound plan and business model to cover the costs. They are dramatically different.
  • Our application has been in use for 4 years and we have only run into a handful of instances where Mendix has been a limitation in moving forward. Not enough for us to have any remorse about choosing the platform and not insurmountable in fixing. In other words, the pros have greatly outweighed the cons.
  • In the case of Kermit, Mendix allowed us to use subject matter experts to document the workflow and rapidly get our MVP out to market to establish a flag in the ground that Kermit is the first and best solution for the problem we solve. Spending our financial resources in the area of building a sound solution rather than acquiring, configuring, managing technology and a raft of developers was key for us as an investor-backed startup.
We were able to build the MVP of Kermit in about 4 months with a complete, commercial version 1 in 9 months with one developer. Having been in charge of large custom web application development teams in the past. I can tell you that Mendix delivers on this promise and it may be their key competitive advantage. That said, my developer was one of the earliest users of Mendix in the US and well-connected in the organization. Now with a more mature application and a new lead developer in the role, we are finding that Agile and SCRUM are key in helping us take knowledge coming in from our customers and streamline or customize workflows and quickly prototype and release new features.

Mendix delivers on the promise of custom application development with less resources, lower time to development and lower costs than traditional development. The Mx environment uses distinct microflows to build core functionality and features in your app. Because of this, debugging is a bit easier and developing customizations or entirely new features moves more quickly. The Mx App Store features hundreds of widgets developed by others that can be downloaded and bolted into your application. This can make adding functionality such as graphs, email workflows and many other features much easier and faster to develop.

Our current lead developer of Mendix had no exposure to the platform and about 10 years of experience developing one custom application from the ground up. He was able to come up to speed quickly on the platform through online training. We have also hired support staff and mobile development staff to further extend and support Mx with a lower skill set.

Because of my initial success in another business using Mendix, I did not search for competing solutions when I built the Kermit application.

We use Mendix for several customer facing applications. Applications are being developed by IT and logistics business analysts. It solves development pains by not using much coding so business analysts can use the tool.
  • Feedback Loop directly from customers that then can be turned directly into a Story for improvement.
  • Flexibility as a front end for many different data sources. This allows us to change data source vendors without disrupting the customer front end.
  • Easy to use modeler makes it easy to see and create workflows.
  • Styling of the pages could be easier.
  • Changes to one page require a full build.
  • One button deploy is actually multiple steps. Not difficult but not one button.
Very appropriate for new app development where you can take advantage of Mendix platform options (basic Create Read Update Delete (CRUD) applications).
Yes, currently we have a business analyst in logistics that does most of the development for our online prescription app.
  • The use of lower skill resources to produce quality work.
  • It also reduced the amount of time from idea conception to delivery.

The Mendix platform is being used across the entire organization in multiple applications. Generally speaking, it addresses the problem where many smaller projects will not meet the bar for utilizing engineering resources, but yet as a combined group of applications would. It also allows us to very rapidly develop and prototype applications.
  • No re-building of plumbing
  • Exceptionally quick to develop and deploy
  • Built in platform for managing user stories and backlog
  • Limited pool of developers/engineers trained on Mendix
  • Some things aren't as intuitive to accomplish
Well suited:
  • Any application with user interaction on the web would be a perfect application for Mendix.
  • Simple workflows
Poor scenarios might be:
  • data aggregation, reporting, analytics
No question that it has accelerated our ability to deliver faster to the business. We have a few deployments under our belt, but the prime example was going from prototype to project inception to MVP launch in about 45 days. Process plays a key role in the speed along with the Mendix platform itself.
IT is always hampered by the legacy as well as rebuilding the plumbing every time. Mendix allows the developers to focus squarely on the business outcome, and have the platform take care of the rest. The process and the tool also allow much more face-time with the user community due to the rapid turnaround and testing of features.

Getting up to speed on developing in the platform is also a much shorter learning curve than traditional development, though it does help to have someone on your team who is well versed in the principles of computer science to help guide when appropriate.

We did not deep dive into the competitors that far, primarily because of the support of the Mendix team. We felt that from a technology standpoint they were all likely close enough. What separated Mendix was the willingness of the people to make sure we succeeded. I believe the Mendix model is not just sell a tool. It is to be a partner, and that's exactly what we were looking for.

Mendix is being used by the IT department in order to build applications for our business partners.
  • Concept to Prototype - Mendix is great at allowing you to quickly turn an idea into something tangible. It removes all the headaches of writing the boilerplate code, setting up app servers, getting environments ready and lets you focus on the solution to the business problem.
  • Ongoing Maintenance - Its a pleasure using Mendix in rapidly changing environments as developing in the platform is painless and faster than traditional methods.
  • Less bugs - one of the benefits of manually writing less code is that there is less opportunity for human error.
Mendix is an excellent choice if you have more than 20 developers. It would be a marginal impact to your budget but would bring great returns.
We have achieved this benefit for multiple applications. We delivered a tracking application that is used hundreds of times a day in less than two weeks.

Mendix is currently being used to develop and maintain our ERP. The application we built is currently being used by the whole organization to manage sales and companies (CRM), process orders, manage transportation and delivery of said orders, manage inventory, and finally generate invoices.
  • The first obvious benefit of working with Mendix is the speed at which you are able to develop applications compared to traditional application development. The app deployment cycle is streamlined and exceptionally fast, which is a must-have for growing companies where the business rules are constantly changing.
  • Along with the speed, comes the reduced man power required to develop an app and ultimately a reduced cost. Our ERP was developed by 2 people where normally it would have been done by a team of developers for a significantly larger cost to complete in the same timeline.
  • Security is handled by Mendix if I choose to host on their servers which is a nice convenience. I have the ability to host my apps on my own servers but letting Mendix manage that is often preferred and less headache for me.
  • The ecosystem needs growing. It would been nice to see more Mendix developers creating things on the app store.
Mendix is well suited for businesses that need custom applications where they maintain control and can make changes/additions on the fly. These companies would only require minimal in-house developers with minimal coding knowledge and do not have to spend thousands of dollars for a software house to develop and manage their app for them. This does not mean Mendix is without cost, I believe while Mendix is significantly cheaper than traditional custom app development, Mendix may not be feasible for small companies or for companies looking for a small/simple app in which case off the shelf options might be a better fit.
Our business rules constantly change the [way] our company grows. We've used Mendix to do more by eliminating manual entry by 200% compared to our old system via setting up integrations for automatic order generation and making our system smarter by embeding business logic to know what's required for orders that meet certain criteria.
It's allowed our IT dept to be more responsive to the needs of the business simply because they can do more in less time.

We selected Mendix over the competition simply because it seems like Mendix is growing faster than the competitors. The functionality is largely the same, but the price and resources favors Mendix at least at the time I reviewed the industry landscape in 2015.
