It was being used as a web content management system for two major departmental sites both internal and external facing.
  • Easy to build components
  • Data from external systems can be migrated into Tridion SDL with proper tools
Cons
  • HTML does not convert well into Tridion and causes many problems
  • Tough to migrate data into Tridion SDL
  • Very few Tridion experts on this planet and are very costly.
Are you building from scratch or migrating into Tridion? Buidling from scratch is easier and migrating can be difficult.

SDL Tridion was a product I used in my first internship at a local college where I took courses. The knowledge base around Tridion was scarce and bare minimum and with no training on the product at all. My goal was to learn Tridion and help other faculty members who wanted to develop their own departments website and broadcast new events or course offerings. As a Web Content Editor and liaison for the Dean of Sciences, I was allowed to train professors and administrative assistants in what I learned about the product and help contribute to Tridion's knowledge base. This also speaks to Tridion's simplicity as a product and how it allows users with a little to no technical experience pick it up in little to no time at all.
  • This product addresses the Why, What, Who and Now, and Where of Content Management to allow simplicity.
  • SDL Tridion has a simple functional design that allows users to stay organized and streamlined.
Cons
  • At first glance, Tridion can be overwhelming with the introduction of the SDL Tridion functional design.
  • The content versioning of this product is fairly average, and meets basic requirements.
I believe this product is well suited for companies and organizations that want to have its internal employees develop webpages on the fly without concerning themselves with the back end system. This product is also easy to train others in, and does not require a lot of knowledge in Java, .NET or HTML. It certainly helps to know these languages as if an issue arises it allows you to debug more closely.

SDL Tridion, good for Multi-brand companies, not for everybody else.

SDL Tridion is a great content management software, if your needs are to manage lots of sites, with translated content. I chose Tridion for a rather large company to use for its 500 plus brand websites. The blueprint model made it an ideal choice to share modules but still maintain an distinct look and feel. Tridion helped leverage the concept of reuse and shorten the time to create new web properties across different brand experiences.
  • The blueprint concept is great, helps facilitate the sharing of code and content.
  • Separation of content and presentation makes it easy to share content across multiple properties, even publish to mobile and gaming platforms a possibility.
  • Workflow and the workflow Visio tool is very powerful. It can be used for various customizations.
  • Content Porter, is your friend and at times can be a pain, but mostly it's your friend
  • Moving between environments, dev, qa, uat and production is simplified.
  • Oh that Broker db.
Cons
  • Installations, do you have a month. I'm joking, but yes it is quite complicated to install SDL Tridion and its many parts.
  • Personalization with Smart Target, requires a PHD in software science. The integration between the products is just not there.
  • SiteEdit 2012 and the new Tridion UI, is a bit outdated. The UI can use a little help from a user experience perspective. It is not tablet friendly.
If your company is managing lots of websites, and would like custom Content Delivery Applications for them, then SDL Tridion is the right tool. Perfect for companies like Unilever, Kimberly Clark, Kraft, where the brand experience is unique however, costs need to be managed. Do not use Tridion if all you have is one or two website manage.

SDL tridion is being used as the primary web content management tool (via the Marketing department) to manage the customer facing website The business problem that it is addressing is the ability to have a site that is responsive (ie being able to be easily viewed via tablets, cell phones, etc) while at the same time compliant. We were experiencing many areas that were being bombarded with complaints that our pages were not ADA compliant and therefore would need to be updated. SDL allowed us the ability to properly tag images and to create content that was relevant to all potential customers, hearing impaired and bilingual. One of the more subtle benefits that we have seen from the transition to SDL Tridion is that content is reusable across the site making it easier to have more consistent and accurate content across the site.
  • Content used as "modules". This allows for one module to be created but then used across the site. Allows for more accurate content site wide.
  • Content is responsive and can be viewed on any device.
  • Allows for more SEO driven content through tagging of modules and pages. Easy to update content makes web crawlers see that content is being updated more often which is great for SEO.
Cons
  • Learning the content management tool may take some time.
  • Although having many options for types of modules, this is sometimes confusing to learn where certain modules can and cannot be used.
  • Publishing can sometimes be cumbersome.
I think the tool is well suited for small and large web site management. Be sure to ask about customer support for the long-term contracts. It will take some time to get the kinks worked out and have it serving specific needs but once it is up and running it is very reliable.
