3Com Baseline Switches (Discontinued)

As our company is growing we need to be able to upgrade our equipment. It is great for smaller companies.

Juniper EX Series Ethernet Switches

They work great as core switches, data center switches, top of rack switches. They can even serve as routers, their routing capability is great, except for where you need lots of routing processing power. I would not use many of them for branch office switches though, due to noise and slowness of bootup

Juniper EX Series Ethernet Switches

  • J-Web web UI is not as easy to navigate as the JunOS command line.
  • Interface identifiers (GE-0/0/0, GE-0/1/0, GE-0/2/0) with ports/modules can be inconsistent from front to the back of switches.

The best in the business but not perfect. The rollback and commit features are the best-seller.

Alternatives Considered

3Com Baseline Switches (Discontinued)

I used Cisco and Cisco is a great product but more on the expensive side. This is a great product for smaller companies.

Juniper EX Series Ethernet Switches

  • Cisco: expensive, cluttered list of models, expensive (and poor) support, OS is different across platforms, difficult to manage, no commit/confirm/rollback
  • Ubiquiti: inexpensive, basically no proper support (community support only)
  • Brocade: OS is Cisco-wannabe (with all of the bad), company has been broken up so support is questionable.
Juniper: obvious choice

Return on Investment

3Com Baseline Switches (Discontinued)

  • Great price.
  • Great product for small company.
  • It was great before we expanded.

Juniper EX Series Ethernet Switches

  • Definitely helped for rapid network replacement, we were able to build data centers in a matter of weeks
  • Return on investment is greatest for data centers, as the commit confirmed feature reduces the need to go on site for making some changes
  • Flexibility of stacking is is another feature that makes ROI more positive
