Ingeniux CMS

This is a CMS solution that uses ASP and now XSLT and ASP.NET MVC environment, so make sure your servers are Windows based. Also, be sure to speak about audits to your CMS environment, this can save you time, money and energy if you intend on developing anything custom in the future. The more prepared your environment, the smoother it is to use this powerful cms.

Pros

  • Amazon DynamoDB excels at quite, intuitive object retrievals. The usage of hash and range keys to retrieve flat objects means it's easy to understand what you are going to get and how to map out objects into entities in your data access layer.
  • Amazon DynamoDB is great at adding new indexes to a table, making it fast and intuitive for prototyping.
  • The ability to use Amazon CloudWatch monitoring on Amazon DynamoDB is very helpful for managing data analysis and discovering issues without a large investment.

  • Customer Service. Ingeniux is a relatively small CMS company, and that's its strongest asset.
  • Training. Their trainers are the best in the business. They break down areas that are hard to understand into manageable pieces. Training for CMS Administrators was one of my best professional experiences.
  • Specialization in higher ed. It's nice to have a company that knows what they're doing. In the realm of higher ed, the visitor experience is very different from selling a physical product, and IGX recognizes that, adjusting their CMS accordingly.

Cons

  • Capacity planning can be difficult, but it is probably a worthwhile exercise in itself. However, today you can scale tables on-demand without capacity planning.
  • Migrations can be slow and difficult. If you need to change your schema (e.g., add a secondary index) after you have written a large volume of data to the table or after consumers of the data are live, migrating can be expensive. Tooling for DynamoDB migrations is less mature than tools for migrating other datastores.
  • The API is complicated, and third-party wrappers, like PynamoDB, are immature.
  • Scanning tables is slow and expensive. It is important to anticipate all of the types of queries you will need to support and design your schema accordingly.

  • User Interface. It could use a refresh.
  • More online resources. The most recent Admin manuals, training or how-to videos/screencasts, etc.

Many of our projects are too small to fully appreciate the value of Amazon DynamoDB. I would be enthusiastic if I felt the use case warranted Amazon DynamoDB, otherwise it's just a major pain.

Again, this is my point of view and I speak on behalf of me the developer and not on behalf of my organization.

Alternatives Considered

As a fully managed NoSQL service, DynamoDB provides a lot of functionality for relatively low cost. Scaling, sharding, throughput performance is managed for you, and you only pay for the bandwidth you provision.

I have only used the free versions of the other softwares. My Ingeniux CMS experience was much better but I had the paid version

Return on Investment

  • Since the Amazon manages the instance, the amount of time a developer needs to spend configuring the database is less. For comparison, if we were to manage the same instance manually, we need to set up EC2 instance, install the DB, setup backup scripts, track backup failures, which is a great overhead for the dev. Using DynamoDB this overhead is reduced and hence having a great ROI.
  • Great documentation and easy setup makes an easy learning curve to transition to DynamoDB. Only caveat is as with any database, the data structure should be thoroughly analyzed for types of querying because there are limitations with the DynamoDB API.
  • Ties very well with rest of the Amazon eco system. Having rest of the applications in Amazon allows managing the application security a breeze.

  • Best User Management. Workflows and permission levels have changed my life. With over 90 users, I have my hands full. But with layered permissions, I can let some advanced users have more leeway while keeping tabs on users who have limited knowledge.
  • Fast mobile development. We asked IGX for mobile and got a very fast turn-around (in a matter of weeks).
