Amazon DynamoDB

If you start with Amazon DynamoDB, you are over optimizing for the future. In my opinion, use Amazon DynamoDB only when SQL can not handle the load of your application.

Ingeniux CMS

This is a CMS solution that uses ASP and now XSLT and ASP.NET MVC environment, so make sure your servers are Windows based. Also, be sure to speak about audits to your CMS environment, this can save you time, money and energy if you intend on developing anything custom in the future. The more prepared your environment, the smoother it is to use this powerful cms.

Pros

  • Amazon DynamoDB is infinitely scalable. It is fast and Amazon automatically allocates more resources.
  • No predefined schema is required. This ensures flexibility.
  • Minimum administrative cost since Amazon manages all that. This works for small companies since you don't need a DevOps headcount.

  • The taxonomy that drives the search and filter is very easy to configure in the CMS.
  • The Word Output feature allows us to generate Word files of content on the fly. We love this!
  • The CMS allows for easy set up with Google Analytics.

Cons

  • It's a NoSQL database. That means you lose all the capabilities of a traditional RDBMS model. You can't do joins to query data and you lose ACID properties.
  • DynamoDB does not support multiple indices. That means for certain queries, you need to do full table scans which is not desirable. There are work arounds for this.
  • The provisioned throughput doesn't degrade gracefully. That means that once you hit the limit, the requests are denied. It's tricky to come up with the limits of your application.

  • I would love to see the ability to add inline comments on pages during documentation reviews.
  • I would love to see more print options directly from the navigation on the publish site. For example, it would be nice to right-click on a section and have the option to print that whole section (or even create a PDF that the user can download).
  • Customized searches would be a great addition.

We use it for current databases and the cost is low enough to not justify transferring to a new technology.

Alternatives Considered

Amazon DynamoDB is a strong contender for an enterprise NoSQL database. We chose Amazon DynamoDB due to:
  1. easy inclusion in our AWS architecture
  2. fast performance with no setup
  3. appropriate balance of object retention and speed compared to other databases available in AWS

I have only used the free versions of the other softwares. My Ingeniux CMS experience was much better but I had the paid version

Return on Investment

  • We have had to back out some entities out of Amazon DynamoDB in favor of a relational database, which has been a major issue costing us around 20 man days of effort.
  • Amazon DynamoDB has given us extremely fast search, by indexing dynamo entities in Amazon CloudSearch and then doing fast lookup in dynamo of the key stored in Amazon CloudSearch.
  • Overall, Dynamo has been a pain point due to smaller situations typically requiring a simple, relational database. I would be enthusiastic about Dynamo for large tables, but when needs are smaller it can be overkill.

  • Best User Management. Workflows and permission levels have changed my life. With over 90 users, I have my hands full. But with layered permissions, I can let some advanced users have more leeway while keeping tabs on users who have limited knowledge.
  • Fast mobile development. We asked IGX for mobile and got a very fast turn-around (in a matter of weeks).
