Cisco Secure Firewall Management Center

[Cisco Secure Firepower Management Center (formerly Firepower Management Center)] is a good replacement to have next-generation firewalls to replace Cisco ASAs if the business wants to stick with Cisco gear. There are issues with pairs of firewalls remaining in sync, site-to-site VPN support on versions pre-6.6.0, being able to dial down into dashboard graphs, as clicking a link takes you to a page with no results, and deploys are slow when comparing to typing commands into an ASA CLI, as it can take multiple minutes for one configuration change.

Salt Open Source Automation Engine is great for configuring servers in a centralised manner. It is not well suited for creating infrastructure, where tools like Terraform should be used instead.

Pros

Cisco Secure Firewall Management Center

  • It is a great advantage to have a single tool for managing multiple devices.
  • The interface is amicable and easy to adapt.
  • There is no risk of immediately applying changes to the device and affecting production; one can decide at what time to perform the deployment.

Cons

Cisco Secure Firewall Management Center

  • Licensing is difficult to navigate on purchase
  • Renewal licensing and support isn't all that easy to do and has its issues
  • The lowest end firewalls on the market seem to be EOL sooner than documented and requires earlier upgrading to ensure FMC itself can be kept current for security reasons. if you buy anything but the cheapest model firewalls this is not a problem
  • Implementing some functionality is more complex than it should be and believe Cisco could do better in this regard to the software

Overall usability is an eight for me because it is easy to manage the firewall policies and monitor the devices' health. The configurations are all done in the GUI which makes it more convenient and hassle free. You can also see the devices' health and the progress of the task thru its taskbar.

Initially, we had a lot of issues with bugs and performance issues, however, Cisco did help us to remediate these over time. A negative point was that the roadmap for Cisco's FMC was subject to many changes--improvements, new features, and even add-on products that were promised in the early stages eventually never made it to the current version.

Puppet was working fine for our needs. We decided to make the switch after our operating system vendor decided to stop official support for SaltStack

Return on Investment

Cisco Secure Firewall Management Center

  • We lost some features like servers load balancing.
  • But, we got NGFW with a very powerful IPS on one box with a single management interface. We also saved money and data center space from buying multiple boxes (one for IPS and the other as Firewall).
  • We also saved team time and multiple devices management, and we got the benefits of a single vendor providing support.
