Cisco UCS Series

Cisco UCS is a great foundation on which to build your enterprise-class server infrastructure. It is not a good fit for small companies because the networking components would be too costly to implement. Cisco UCS blades and rack-mount servers are relatively easy to manage through the UCS console, where you can apply blade profiles and create automation to help provision new servers, etc.

IBM Power System S922

I like to use the IBM Power series for medium size projects where I need a good amount of CPU and I/O spread over several Lpars. This way, the servers can take advantage of the 40GB shared backplane for ethernet and can share unused CPU and memory resources. It is not possible to run Windows workloads.

Pros

Cisco UCS Series

  • Cisco UCS servers are really excellent hypervisor hosts. They were built for it and one can tell that they were. They also have nice add-on features that you can buy when you first get them, but you can also add a lot of features later on.
  • Cisco USC servers, exactly like their HP analogues, HP ProLiant servers, are very robust, extremely reliable and have really excellent management tools. You don't have to pay or an iLo subscription on UCS servers like you do on HP ProLiants, however. A USC server comes with the "CIMC" or "Cisco Integrated Management Controller" which is obviously pretty much exactly the same thing as an iLo.
  • You can get parts for Cisco UCS server super fast (depending on your SmartNet plan type) and the support (through TAC) is unbeatable.

IBM Power System S922

  • High performance and I/O density in a 2U form factor.
  • Very reliable, only 1 HBA failure in 10 years for 6 servers, which is less than HPE Proliant o Synergy in our environment.

Cons

Cisco UCS Series

  • Price - typically a little higher priced compared to similar hardware.
  • This product could be improved if it allowed other memory choices besides Cisco memory. You cannot simply add more memory that is not from Cisco. You have to purchase their memory which is more expensive than other memory choices.
  • Setup is a little complicated at first. Once set up and running there isn't much to configure later.

IBM Power System S922

  • It would be nice to not require the separate Hardware Management Module, as this is always a bit tricky to set up.

Usability

While Cisco's hardware is solid and long running, their software is usually the weak point. I will say that they are getting better with each release but if I had to find a problem with usability that would be it. Overall usability is good when you can work around software issues.

Cisco support for the UCS is the same experience you will have with most of their other product lines. And what you've come to experience is short wait times for tier 1 issues and quick callbacks for others. The same goes for their UCS line and also hardware turnaround is very fast. When we have a high priority ticket we can literally call and be on the phone with someone within minutes, and as you know when you're under the gun each minute is crucial.

Alternatives Considered

Cisco UCS Series

We also considered some of the Dell options, none of those produced what we needed. UCS met our business needs in ways that other companies and solutions could not compete. I do think other solutions have caught up but Cisco was ahead of its time when they brought this to market. I would 100% use this again.

IBM Power System S922

We did our due diligence and did sizings for Proliant DL580 and Synergy 480. Our evaluations took into consideration that on the HPE servers we needed to run Vmware hypervisor and Windows server for the guests. The performance numbers for the best cases got to 70% of the S922 numbers and worst case to 50%. Our ERP vendor, Lawson/Infor, and our administrators prefer to run their large database on AIX instead of Windows or Suse Linux. Considering all factors, it was easy to decide to purchase the IBM S922 servers.

Return on Investment

Cisco UCS Series

  • We recommend Cisco UCS only to all the customers and the are happy so far with it.
  • Less performance issues due to in built storage makes it a better choice.
  • CIMC and hot swappable drives makes it the first choice.
  • RAID support.

  • The upgrade from P740 to S922 reduced our nightly batch processes from 9 to 6 hours.
