Dell Data Protection | Encryption Enterprise Edition (DDPE)

For file level encryption Credant is not a bad solution. However, they were recently bought by Dell so it remains to be seen what they do with the software.

It is great for Windows authentication and works with many other applications. In fact, the FDIC was here this past week and they were impressed in our utilization of the DigitalPersona software. It does add an extra level of security here at the bank and that is very important considering all of the financial data that we have here.

Pros

Dell Data Protection | Encryption Enterprise Edition (DDPE)

  • Silent installation/uninstallation. It was very easy to deploy and remove the software remotely.
  • Transparent to users. Users did not see messages from the software or notice performance issues during encryption.
  • File or disk level encryption. Includes the option to do file or full-disk encryption to meet your organization's needs.

  • Super fast to recognize fingerprint and authenticate .
  • Accurate with a wide area of fingerprint. Most windows laptops with built in fingerprint scanners only recognize a small area of print.
  • Units are inexpensive.
  • Quick and easy to install server software and client hardware.
  • When workstations were upgraded from Windows 8.1 to Windows 10 the software continued working flawlessly.

Cons

Dell Data Protection | Encryption Enterprise Edition (DDPE)

  • Syntax used to create policies is confusing and prone to redundant encryption.
  • Management console is now based on Silverlight and is slow and gives errors.
  • Full disk encryption caused lots of errors for us, could only be corrected by dropping a text file onto the C drive.

  • Multiple domains - DigitalPersona struggles with multiple domains. Since the solution is licensed per domain, migrating users between domains can be troublesome to keep licensed. Additionally, migrating to a new domain removes the AD leaf objects that store all digital persona information, essentially wiping out and credentials or other stored information.
  • Password change - DigitalPersona can be confusing to update when a stored password for a website is updated. The password is entered, and then the user is redirected to the websites password change page. Users must then authenticate with a Digital persona credential again before being prompted by Digital Persona to update the password. If the user is allowed to change the password manually through the websites page, this will lead to what is stored in Digital Persona being out of sync with the new password, and eventually account lockouts.
  • Terminal Server - DigitalPersona has performance issues when utilized on a high-traffic terminal server. Often it causes big CPU spikes as well as hanging sessions upon disconnect.

Two things.1- because of the hardware investment we already made in all the fingerprint readers.2 - I have yet to see a competitor with a similar concept.

I think there are still fundamental enhancements needed to be added to the management consoles and I think there ought to be a Centralized, Windows Based "Thick" Management Application instead of individual utilities which vary from MMCs, Scripts, Wizards, etc.

Extremely poor; I've never encountered such. Professional Services completely dropped us for months. Crossmatch tech support seems like it has 3 techs tops! No response to emails, calls, the absolute worst! I will never recommend DP to anyone.

Could use tools to audit license usage at a more granular level as to allow an administrator to free up licenses from users whom seldom use their biometrics to login.

Alternatives Considered

Dell Data Protection | Encryption Enterprise Edition (DDPE)

We switched to McAfee Endpoint Encryption, which provides full-disk encryption. We saw fewer issues with McAfee Endpoint Encryption full-disk encryption than Credant full-disk encryption.

There were 2 determining factors as to why we chose Digital Persona over Imprivata and 2FA. Digital Persona is a traditional purchase platform whereas the other two were subscription based platforms. The initial purchase price was greater with Digital Persona but the lower maintenance costs after year one make up the difference after 4 years. Secondly, we had more options and flexibility with the number of authenticators we can enable. This allows our end-users to pick the ones that work best for them.

Return on Investment

Dell Data Protection | Encryption Enterprise Edition (DDPE)

  • Created some problems for our helpdesk with full-disk encryption.
  • Allowed us to meet security requirements at a reasonable price.
  • Decent reporting capabilities.

  • DigitalPersona Altus has been very positive for our I.T staff in terms of configuration and management and for our end users in terms of ease of use, with minimal training.
  • Help Desk Calls: We have seen fewer calls to our help desk for password resets across most user accounts.
