We have been able to use Foundation Software in almost every construction accounting situation. You can tell it was designed for the intricacies of construction accounting. While we have not explored it lately, the project management module was not ideal. Foundation Software knows accounting and is strong in that field. I think they would be best suited to stay within the accounting realm and focus their resources on that arena.

Xero

Xero was a definite step up from QBO, specifically for the ability to handle multiple currencies. It has allowed us to streamline our bookkeeping and month-end processes through the use of integrations with other services. It is a great tool for basic businesses. I do feel it is not the best tool for enterprise customers, complex businesses, or the consolidation of entities.

  • Easy to set-up/use. It took me only 15-minutes for the initial set-up.
  • Provide necessary integration with other applications we use. We integrate Xero with Expensify and JustWorks.
  • Cost-effective and therefore much cheaper than other plans out there.
  • Real-time link with our bank, which provides real-time account balances of what's in our bank account.
  • Standard reports already built-in.

Xero

  • Overall it is a great platform and quite comprehensive for US based users.
  • However, if we focus on multinational companies that want to integrate the information of different companies in several countries within the same solution, we find the need to carry out reports outside the platform to provide the accounting structure and compliance necessary in countries outside the US.

Foundation Software makes setup and data entry clean and straightforward. Even without prompts, a user would be able to navigate around the basic functions of the software. With a little training and the help manual they provide, a user can learn the system very easily. For those wanting to get deeper into things like queries and dashboards, they offer trainings and conferences that are helpful.

Xero has always been easy and intuitive to use. I very, very rarely require help using it and when I do, searching the help database usually solves the problem. I taught myself how to use Xero when starting my business and, since then, have always appreciated how easy it is to use and how rich and valuable the data is that it produces. I strongly believe that the strength of my business is in part due to the way I have been able to keep tidy books with Xero.

We have been actively using and 100% Xero based for our ecommerce accounting practice for over 4 years. There has on been one real outage for more than 5 minutes. Xero was open and transparent about the outage, what they were doing to resolve the issue, and provided 15 minute updates. Showing how they care about their customers and partners. Plus, showing that their customers care too, were understanding, and went surfing or in our case took a nap. Couldn't run our business without Xero as a partner.

Pages generally load quickly, but it's a fairly common occurrence to have pages taking a bit longer than I'd like to load (as in, 4+ seconds). Occasionally I have to refresh a page to get it to work. Bank feed and integrations tend to be slow in general, but that could easily be due to API latency on the side of the other parties. Most of the time, though, the bank feeds refresh before I login so it's not a huge problem. Not necessarily good performance compared to a local app like QuickBooks desktop, but definitely good performance for a cloud application. Room for growth? yes.

I have used Foundation Software support many times over the last ten years. I have never had an issue they were unable or unwilling to address. Even oddities are handled quickly and resolved efficiently. I have also had customization done and was very happy with the customer support they offered in developing a query and report that would met our unique need.

If it can be done, time the implementation near a new fiscal year so you can start clean. Otherwise, you have to go back and do historical data from the beginning of the fiscal year, which can be brain draining.

I did not have a hand in deciding the software, but for our company is has not
led to increased productivity or made things easier. It has been more difficult
for payroll to be inputted correctly and the payroll reports for certified
payroll often come out incorrect and we need to manually figure out how to correct
the issues and get them in correctly

I used QuickBoosk for years when I first started my companies. As someone who came from a science background, I struggled learning and using QuickBooks. It was never intuitive for me. Eventually, invoicing and normal bookkeeping took so much time for me that I had to outsource it to an external bookkeeping firm. They were the one that recommended that I try Xero and it was night and day for me. Now all the invoicing and bookkeeping are done in-house, which saved us significant amounts of money.

Same pricing regardless of number of transactions or users. Real benefit is variety of integrated apps that allow you to automate processes and have functionality that 10 years ago was only available in ERP systems costing hundreds of thousands.
