Google Classroom

Google Classroom is well suited to a class where you may have students turn things in digitally and/or you want to be able to push resources or info out to students, as well as assignments, all in one place. It may be less appropriate for a class where you are not having students do much digitally or where you are providing students with paper copies of everything.

McGraw-Hill Connect

McGraw-Hill Connect is most suitable for a classroom where students have been taught to work independently, and are motivated to improve their math skills. It is less appropriate for classrooms where students' levels are very low, and where students are generally discouraged and have given up. Despite being an overall independent program, McGraw-Hill Connect requires some support from adults to get each student started.

Pros

Google Classroom

  • Seamless integration with Google Drive. Easy for teachers to attach Gsuite files such as docs, slides, sheets, forms, site to enhance the learning.
  • Manage student work submissions and whether they are on time or late. Students submit their work digitally and teachers can track the submissions, send them back for editing, or award points.
  • Streamline classwork and homework assignments into one simple thread. Much like a social media platform like Twitter or Facebook, Google Classroom has everything top-down in one fluid thread for students and teachers to be able to easily find and access.
  • Integration with other edtech tools such as Pear Deck, Edpuzzle, etc. Teachers can link to outside assignments on other programs they often use in their classrooms with their students.

McGraw-Hill Connect

  • Integration with Canvas is seamless and easy to use.
  • Assignment completion, for students, is straightforward and easy to use.
  • The SmartBook allows students to read as they are tested with questions and this helps them learn the material easily without having first trying to read, memorize a chapter and then answer questions.

Cons

Google Classroom

  • Google Classroom is NOT an LMS, although some schools/districts try to mold it in that fashion. It does not include robust features of an LMS.
  • Google Classroom provides a grade book, but that grade book does not sync with all district's grade book, so you will have to manually transfer any grades received.
  • It would be great to see Google Classroom offer a closed-captioned option for any uploaded videos shared on the site.

McGraw-Hill Connect

  • Difficult navigation upon sign-in
  • Too many choices per chapter - difficult to know which part to select to walk through assignments with students

More and more teachers are adopting Google Classroom into their curriculum at our school. I foresee it expanding throughout the school

This is only a product I would recommend to a humanities teacher. Math and science teachers cannot use this product the same way that I can as an English teacher. It is great for word process and for reading, but unable to handle the demands of math and science. Therefore, I would highly recommend this product to English or Social Studies teachers, but NOT math or science teachers

We have had very little trouble in accessing Google Classroom. Our issues, if any, have risen from our server and not the Google servers.

I tried to find a solution to why I would not receive email notifications as the classroom teacher when my students posted anything in the classroom stream and I was unable to find it or any simple way to access such help if it did exist.

It was relatively easy to implement due to the simplicity of the platform. Even our more technology challenged teachers found it easy to get started with Google Classroom.

Alternatives Considered

Google Classroom

I haven't tested or evaluated another digital classroom website or application. I feel like Google Classroom is convenient for many reasons such as compatibility to Google docs, slides, etc. I also love the ability to link to YouTube and other sites. I don't know if there would be a site that is easier to maneuver.

McGraw-Hill Connect

We looked at several different competitors before adopting McGraw-Hill Connect. While they all had their own strengths and weaknesses, they all offered similar services. However, Connect offered SmartBook and we felt that was a huge differentiator. Connect also has the most in-depth and customizable reporting. Finally, we found after adopting that Connect has great implementation services.

Return on Investment

Google Classroom

  • Positive ROI has been, specifically in our Physical Education department, the ability for students to quickly provide reflections on activities rather than being sent away to do this as homework. This resulted in a much higher completion rate.
  • Another positive has been the auto-creation and organization of folders in courses for our teachers to reference in future years.

McGraw-Hill Connect

  • Improved efficiency from analysts looking to speed up the time it takes to do certain tasks.
  • Less waste on searching and researching how to do certain concepts.
  • Negative impact is use by individuals that can learn better through other methods that don't require activities.
