Considered Multiple Products
HipChat (discontinued)
Chose HipChat (discontinued)
We tried a lot of chat clients before choosing HipChat. The Skype for Business UI on the Mac side was 5 years old and terrible. Mac users hated the app including our CTO. Cisco Jabber was expensive to license and maintain; Skype was open to the public which took time away due …
Chose HipChat (discontinued)
Slack is better developed then HipChat. It's better and faster for connecting with people. HipChat is also good but needs to be developed. The company has to update their software regularly to reach the level where Slack is now.
Chose HipChat (discontinued)
HipChat offers a good advantage for organizations looking for a low cost communication tool. The integration is easy and widely supported by many forums. Though, the technical issues are less reliable. Due to technical failures, Slack and Skype take the cake. Slack offers many …
Chose HipChat (discontinued)
I used HipChat in a company which was pro "open source" and another one which is pro Atlassian.
For the "open source" company I was not involved in the decision of selecting HipChat but I know that the integration with Jenkins and other internal tools were drivers for selecting …
Chose HipChat (discontinued)
Hipchat is good with an internet version available but it has more unnecessary messages.
Chose HipChat (discontinued)
Hipchat behaves equally good among several other platforms used at my company (OSX, Windows, Linux). It brings us the possibility to integrate with most of our used tools, and the cost is lower than other options. Chat history and encryption makes it easier to find previous …
Chose HipChat (discontinued)
Team focused chat rooms and integration with JIRA was the primary reason.
Chose HipChat (discontinued)
Both Skype and Slack definitely are better in my mind. We didn't choose HipChat; it's the tool that our client requires.
Lifesize Video Conferencing
Chose Lifesize Video Conferencing
LifeSize was selected for its ease of use and not requiring a bunch of setup. The LifeSize unit does not require a computer to be used which is very nice. The camera is very high quality and is integrated into the conference phone. Skype for Business does not do this unless …
Chose Lifesize Video Conferencing
Both Skype and Lifesize have audio and video performance issues. Skype for Business is not out of the box HIPAA compliant. Lifesize has a support number where real people respond. Lifesize is mostly compatible with our room video conferencing equipment.
Chose Lifesize Video Conferencing
This really was not even a close race between Skype and LifeSize. We wanted a product that would be seamless in our large and even the small conference rooms. We could not find an elegant way to get Skype for Business to work in a larger room. Even though it was "free" we …
Chose Lifesize Video Conferencing
While it is not the most resourceful, it meets our needs and comes at a cost that our business can afford. Why pay more? That's why we have Lifesize Video Conferencing.
Chose Lifesize Video Conferencing
When I compare with other products Lifesize wins definitely for video quality.
Chose Lifesize Video Conferencing
For the TOC, I would say Lifsize has been good. We do use a combination of Lifesize and Polycom endpoints. Polycom does have more capabilities but at a higher cost.
Chose Lifesize Video Conferencing
We liked the LifeSize audio and video equipment. Its proprietary but the quality of the hardware (such as the lens for the camera) is very high end. This makes for clear image transmission and high video quality. It allows for big conference\meeting room setups without …
Chose Lifesize Video Conferencing
We only implemented the Lifesize video conferencing system because a bullheaded C level executive demanded it. I recommended against it throughout the entire process, as it is a poor implementation of all the technology it uses.
Chose Lifesize Video Conferencing
The biggest difference ends up being having a conference room device providing a high-quality experience.
Chose Lifesize Video Conferencing
Microsoft Teams can be integrated with a myriad Logitech or Jabra devices, many of the same or better quality than Lifesize. The cost for these devices is also significantly less.
Chose Lifesize Video Conferencing
Lifesize is one of the very few, if not only, video manufacturers to develop their own software and hardware making for a very stable solution that isn't as vulnerable to changes on the market and where all the different integrations always work well on both software and …
Chose Lifesize Video Conferencing
LifeSize seems to be one the most interoperable systems available, and even more so now that you can connect with those who might be using Skype for business. Compared to Skype for business, I think the video and presentation experience is hands down better. However, Skype has …
Chose Lifesize Video Conferencing
Lifesize is much easier to use and to implement. Also the automatic upgrades and the way lifesize comunicates with the cloud I find it more secure and reliable.
Chose Lifesize Video Conferencing
Overall, I'd have to say that on the endpoint side Lifesize really competes well against Polycom and Cisco, and I think they have the best product. On the software front, Lifesize does very well overall and they are continuing to get better.
To sum up, when we look at the total …
Chose Lifesize Video Conferencing
Lifesize works into the telepresence infrastructure
Chose Lifesize Video Conferencing
We chose Lifesize because of it's ease, quality of use and reasonable pricing. We looked into several online systems such as Skype but weren't as pleased with their audio/video quality or user friendliness as we were with Lifesize.
Skype for Business / Lync (discontinued)
Chose Skype for Business / Lync (discontinued)
HipChat is more a 1 to 1 chat and is not a proper contender but Google Hangouts has pretty all we need and at the moment has taken Skype for Business' place. It's free and is even more widespread than Skype. You need just Google Chrome.
Chose Skype for Business / Lync (discontinued)
We're currently using Lifesize, however, I like the versatility of Skype and being able to directly set up meetings within Outlook, as well as the integration with the phone network to make outgoing calls directly within the Skype environment.
Chose Skype for Business / Lync (discontinued)
Easier integration than some, but unlike Google Hangouts, it is not free. We chose Skype for Business because of the easier integration and simplified licensing when bundled with Office365.
Chose Skype for Business / Lync (discontinued)
Skype for Business has made itself a clear leader among the pack. I would put it at the top of the list because it's easy to deploy/manage and simply works great!
Chose Skype for Business / Lync (discontinued)
Skype for Business works, but it's not as user-friendly or stable as normal Skype. One difficulty with Skype for Business is that the features aren't always implementable. Skype for Business is more stable than Google Hangouts. It doesn't have as many features as WebEx, but it …

Ways HipChat is Better
  • Hipchat is significantly more cross-platform friendly
  • A little more customizable
Chose Skype for Business / Lync (discontinued)
Hangouts is also pretty nice except that it breaks down more frequently and the UI is not that pretty cool.

Skype for Business, now part of Microsoft Teams is a remote/virtual team collaboration tool must have...especially if you already use Microsoft tools. Of course, since it now part of an MS 365 subscription, it really doesn't make sense to use anything else. It is easy to use and just works. I'm not sure how anyone who works with digital files/documents and needs to work with other people doing similar work can be effective without such a tool. Of course, there are a number of alternatives like Zoom or Webex, but why pay or use another separate tool if you don't need to. :-)

Pros
Atlassian
  • HipChat is very stable and reliable. I have never had issues with not being able to connect or being able to communicate with others on HipChat.
  • HipChat integrates quite well with other applications, such as Jira and Stash. This is a main selling point for my team. It provides a convenient feed of actions on a JIRA story or Stash pull request.
  • HipCat does a good job of allowing 1-1 and group chats. It is simple to start a new conversation and it is easy to hold a group conversation and keep track of who is in the room.
  • I like how HipChat has away/here/on mobile statuses. This makes it easy to see if a person is available to be contacted.

  • The touchpad makes it extremely easy to join or start conference calls with a single pushbutton.
  • The Lifesize solution is affordable and has been extremely reliable for our video conference calls.
  • Camera quality is great and provides clear video for our organization.
  • The pan/tilt/zoom features are very helpful to focus in on specific people or items during a training or demonstration.

  • Instant messaging to anyone who we know only by name/email. Even if they're offline, they get the message in missed convos and a notification automatically goes to them via Outlook mail. All conversations are saved and accessible via Outlook.
  • Video and voice calls are a norm in the WFH scenario, and an average employee has around 4-5 calls a day. Skype gives notifications for upcoming meetings, allows easy scheduling via outlook calendar, and its audio/video quality [is] reasonably good compared to the amount of data it consumes.
  • Status availabilities - in the WFH scenario, you could be off for lunch, out of office, busy, sharing screens - and might not want to be disturbed. Skype allows you to do that, and in case you're off, ensures that you know that you have missed messages.
  • Screen sharing - we have to share screens at least once or twice a day with a coworker when working on some issues/features, and Skype easily lets us do that. One of the best things about Skype is that the screen can be shared without being on a video/voice call - which is of immense advantage because oftentimes, you could prefer sharing the screen, while it [is] too noisy to talk.

Cons
Atlassian
  • Mobile app is not very responsive on iOS. Sometimes connection to Hipchat servers is taking too long even on good networks.
  • Both mobile and desktop versions have no alphabetical or recent sorting for groups and chat rooms.
  • Video and audio calls are pretty useless, they're slow and not always work.
  • The whole user interface is simple but very outdated - apparently Atlassian didn't focus too much on Hipchat even though they tried in the last 2 years.

  • Lack of features or options to integrate with other solutions
  • Audio was just ok. If it was a meeting with more than 3-4 people, it seemed it was too much
  • I had a hard time with support. They were not very responsive and felt like an up-hill battle at times.

  • Connection issues can be hard to diagnose when they come up(as some knowledge of server information may be needed to reestablish as the connection troubleshooting options on the sky are not as user-friendly as the rest of the platform.
  • Some issues setting up camera/sound could use more info on troubleshooting options with playback sound, video, etc.
  • Statuses sometimes are unreliable and do not display correctly .

Other than the HIPAA compliance, we have no compelling reason to retain LifeSize when we can already pay for similar services included with our UCaaS service. Our UCaaS vendor, Fuze, includes video conferencing with the VoIP services via single, integrated client software package. Additional limitations include minimal implementation assistance, training service, training materials and assistance driving internal adoption. Issues with slow speed for desktop sharing and audio quality make the technical aspects of Lifesize inferior to competitors.

The software is simple to install and configure. It is rather simple to explain for correct use. It is possible to profile users for the different functions offered. It is integrated quite completely with Outlook and with Active Directory security. It performs all communication functions well with one or more interlocutors and the possibility of granting control of your computer is convenient.

Usability
Atlassian
The app itself had a pleasant if not generic interface. As a user experience expert and engineer I can say the interface is fairly intuitive if not bland. It does what you expect it to do and it's available on iOS and Android devices. If I recall it was generally pretty light weight in terms of installation size.

Overall experience with Lifesize Video Conferencing has been great. While it serves it's basic purpose of allowing smooth video/audio meetings of people located at different places with option of screen sharing/chatting/ recording, what add to it's pros are it's accessibility from various platforms, flexibility to switch to a listen only mode in case of network issues and ease of operation.

We tried a lot of chat clients before choosing HipChat. The Skype for Business UI on the Mac side was 5 years old and terrible. Mac users hated the app including our CTO. Cisco Jabber was expensive to license and maintain; Skype was open to the public which took time away due to users dealing with spam and could allow viruses and malware. HipChat being a closed product, centrally managed and available to try without an upfront investment was perfect for our environment. All our Agile teams have their own room, chat and can communicate with others quickly and easily.

When compared to Zoom, one of the massive benefits that Lifesize brings is total peace of mind with security. Call encryption is part of the core in Lifesize and not an optional feature as in Zoom. I don't know about you, but every conversation can contain private and confidential information, so protecting me, my team, and my customers is totally covered with Lifesize! When compared with other providers, the quality of the video and lip sync on Lifesize is simply flawless. With the ability to deliver a call at 4k ultra high definition at 60 frames per second, the platform is simply awesome! Zoom is only 720p and the data share is only 5 frames per second. Zoom is simply substandard when compared to Lifesize. We often speak with clients who are using Teams or Skype for Business, but when you compare the video and audio quality with that achieved by Lifesize, they simply do not match up. If you want excellent quality video and ultra-sharp audio, then Lifesize is the only way to go!
