LMS Practice Management

It is really well suited to medium to large sized attorney firms and practices. For small firms with one or two attorneys, it can be a bit of an overkill with its many features and components. On the other hand, smaller firms could pick and choose which features or components could be used without needing to utilize the entire package.

PCLaw

If you're a law firm who has a lot of clients/matters, PCLaw may not be available for you. My old firm grew to a point where they had to switch to Juris because they had too many matters in the system. If you're a smaller firm who needs an accounting software that is easy to use and can quickly get bills out to get you paid, this is a great product

The software may not be pretty, but it works. It could use a facelift but the functionality is still there. Personally, I would like to see an investment to make it prettier, but again, function over fashion. It is not a client-facing application, so internal use does not need to be razzle-dazzle.

I've always had positive phone calls with PCLaw support. I usually have my questions answered within a few minutes of my phone call, and rarely have to go into very much detail

Alternatives Considered

LMS Practice Management

LMS Practice Management provides a wealth of features not often found in one package. Its information visualization tools and client management tools are extremely helpful in providing oversight on client billing matters. Its reporting tools were also fairly robust, providing more features than competitor products on the markets. While not perfect, its clean interface and number of components help make it stand out among the competition

PCLaw

I have not used any particular products that are similar to LexisNexis PCLaw. It is somewhat of an odd hybrid in that it is designed to assist with law practice management and therefore cuts across multiple specialties from billing/accounts receivable to lawyers and staff who need case information as well.

Return on Investment

LMS Practice Management

  • The program helps a great deal in tracking billing and accounting information to help reduce over expenditures.
  • The myriad of features including client management is really helpful in management customer relationships which can save time and money.
  • Sometimes there are problems or errors that impact the product's performance.

PCLaw

  • We are able to send out bills efficiently, which helps our cash flow and keeps receivables down (depending on the client).
  • We are able to pull detailed accounting reports, which helps us populate our end of the quarter/year spreadsheet for partner's net income.
  • Our attorneys are very comfortable with the pre-bill/billing process, so it saves them time, allowing them to bill more.
