Likelihood to Recommend

ManageEngine NetFlow Analyzer

If you need to monitor traffic, this is a good choice of application for the price. It does that very well. If you need to take a deep deep dive into the traffic, you will have to use something else but that is just standard with network troubleshooting... it takes multiple applications to get a complete picture... or a lot of money on 1 application. Beyond that, this application does what it is designed to do and does it very well. So to answer this question directly, this application is well suited for time when you need a high-level view of traffic and not suited well for times when you need to see more detailed information of what exactly is being sent.

Cisco StealthWatch

I would suggest performing an initial deep-dive and analysis of the current state of your network and workflow in terms of maintenance, deployment, and management. If it takes quite an amount of effort for a single person or a team, for an extended period of time, then I would highly recommend taking a look at and perhaps deploying Cisco StealthWatch as it will solve all of the items above.

Pros

ManageEngine NetFlow Analyzer

  • Analyze network traffic by breaking it down into conversations with the ability to look at ingress and egress traffic.
  • Gives a quick view of overall performance.

Cisco StealthWatch

  • Management Consoles - they are simple, easy to understand, centralized, organized, and have complete visibility and control.
  • Encrypted Traffic Analytics (ETA) - golden functionality that provides us more visibility without the need to decrypt traffic.
  • Extended data - longer data retention that is very helpful to our scalability issues.

Cons

ManageEngine NetFlow Analyzer

  • The interface could stand to flow a little better. It is functional, but there is room for improvement.
  • The dashboard creation process is just incomplete. For example, it would be nice to be able to add in a widget for IP groups.

Cisco StealthWatch

  • The StealthWatch interface is clunky and broken into 2 parts, both an HTML console and a JAVA console. This causes issues as one is completely different than the other.
  • Licenses are eaten up very quickly and can be pricey.
  • Upgrading StealthWatch is more tedious and time consuming than it should be.

The support is always on point, fast, reliable, and their employees go above and beyond to help when we need it. I have yet to call them on any product we use and not get the issue resolved in a fast and timely manner. Also, they are also very pleasant while on the phone and/or in teh email chain. Overall I just couldn't ask for better.

We had an amazing experience with assistance during the deployment and hand-over phase to operations. They were very informative and provided proper guidance so that we can further develop on our own.The downside is of course the monetary requirement, but it was very well worth it. It will allow the administrators, users, and support members to fully utilize the functionalities and tailor them to the day to day workflow and needs.

Alternatives Considered

ManageEngine NetFlow Analyzer

There were others, but I don't recall which ones. SolarWinds only comes to mind because they were the closest we came to purchase. Here is why we did not. 1) SolarWinds has very bad sales practices. You get a demo and they spend the next 2 years calling 2) They are expensive 3) The products often do not perform well over the long haul. 4) NetFlow Analyzer just 'felt' like a better application. It was easier to setup, easier to maintain, and in a lot of ways very much faster.

NTOP is the only thing out there, in my opinion, that provides similar type of visibility. But StealthWatch is the product all vendors should strive to emulate. It is easy to install; it is easy to configure; it works as advertised (and then some). I do recommend the three-day work shop they occasionally run - or some onsite training. The product is feature rich and the training will help you get the most out of it.

Cisco StealthWatch

  • ROI - it has good ROI in terms of functionalities and after-sales support.
  • Management - it is easy to handle and understand, it has all the functionalities to control the administrative tasks.
  • Available resources online from Cisco and vendors and good testimonials, too, from partners and existing customers.
