What is MicroStrategy Analytics?

The MicroStrategy platform differs somewhat from competing platforms in that it does not include a data warehouse.

The platform integrates with a wide range of third-party data warehouses however. MicroStrategy also built a free discovery/visualization tool called MicroStrategy Analytics Desktop, which is not completely integrated with the rest of the platform. MicroStrategy has strong mobile and cloud capabilities which are differentiators for the platform. MicroStrategy's cloud offerings are unique in that they host the software in their own data centers and allow customers to keep their data on-premise to alleviate security concerns. Analytics is a platform for Business Intelligence (BI) and self-service analytics. It enables organizations worldwide to analyze the vast amounts of data stored across their enterprises to make better business decisions.

MicroStrategy currently has 3 versions:

  • MicroStrategy Analytics Enterprise: Enterprise-grade business intelligence
  • MicroStrategy Analytics Desktop: Free self-service visual analytics
  • MicroStrategy Analytics Express: Free cloud-based self-service visual analytics

Companies can't remove reviews or game the system. Here's why

BI is not cheap, sometimes... In many cases the "Enterprise-ness" of MS is not necessary as many smaller competitors are gaining ground quickly (QlikView, Tableau, Birst, etc...) and would make great solutions for companies that do not require the strict rules associated with a larger organization. I would just make sure that as anyone is considering either a new BI install or change that they make sure to look at some of the "new" Big Data toting companies that can add value quickly.

You have to ask if the product you're using can handle large datasets and whether there is flexibility in the delivery of analytics? In addition, how many DBMS's does the product natively support? What is the TCO? MicroStrategy is in the upper tier for each of these questions.

MicroStrategy Analytics is very well suited for small and large companies and for varying degrees of budgets. The price model is fair for the type of features and functionality out of the box. There will have to be someone dedicated to MicroStrategy and the lifecycle of the business data model. It is not a light weight product on the back end, but can be very lightweight to the end users. No-SQL allows the domain experts, people who understand the business and not technology, to analyze and dig at questions without being burdened by asking database experts for advanced SQL generation. I give this product a 9 out of 10 because it is not fully HIPAA compliant and the means to make it HIPAA compliant means we must cripple some basic functionality.

MSTR may not for any business types or it may not be a one size fits all kind of solution. There are other BI tools out in the market that are available for relatively less or even free to meet your needs. So an extensive vendor analysis to meet your specific needs is essential.

Be very careful before buying the full on-site version of the product. If the sales rep says that it has minimal IT involvement, don't believe it. Ask about cloud options, the different modules that you are buying as part of their proposal, and what kind of training they are offering as part of their bid. If it's online training and not on-site, be very skeptical.

I would recommend understanding the needs of the end user and having the full scope available so that the proper project can be scaled in the timeline defined. Phasing may need to happen as you problem solve for elements that require modification in order to fit into the analytics tool/cube.

Update Dec-14, this continues to be a game changer for our decision making and ability to flex with the changing media landscape.

It would really depend on the size, scale and needs of your data warehouse BI tool. I would say a good rule of thumb if you have a minimum of 50 users that are going to be constantly creating/slicing/dicing your data, this may be the tool for you. If fewer, then I would suggest investing in a great data warehouse developer and Excel classes for your consumers. Also know that, even though it touts itself as a fast, self-service BI system, unless you have a skilled SQL Developer or DBA, it will be slow as molasses as it creates the tSQL for the queries itself, in a very poorly designed manner.

MicroStrategy is not for every person or every marketing analysis / sales company or classroom. There are some great tools and management techniques within MicroStrategy. It is very easy to use and easy to teach non-experienced analysis users the basics. There are quality filters to form reports to specific goals and business needs.

It really depends on the use case. If the need is simply to standardize reporting, MicroStrategy might meet or even exceed expectations However, if the need is to guide executive decision-making with agile ad hoc analytics, there are other tools that are much better suited to the task.

I would really try to understand what the colleague is looking to gain out of the tool. For example - things I'd suggest they ask themselves first and then their prospective vendors would include:
  • Do you want to be able to bring in data on the fly, easily, or do you want to be limited to what lives in your data warehouse
  • Do you want to be able to develop quick ad-hoc reports & insights, or are pre-built reports more important to you
  • Is cost a main concern? Do you need to tie ROI to this tool in order to get funding?

I would say MicroStrategy is useful for someone who is 100% dedicated to manipulating data as their day-to-day responsibility. It is also important to set expectations with individuals who will be using your work in MicroStrategy to be aware of the fact that it takes time for the main users to become familiar with the platform. Additionally, you must be willing to constantly inform your team of any issues arising with reporting for the platform.

Be patient when first learning the system as it can be frustrating to pick up and understand the lingo for execution. Give examples of how you would utilize the data warehouse and ask for examples of building reports as well as output. Be sure to ask what technical support would be offered in the honeymoon period while you are getting acclimated to the product.

Ask yourself what's most important for you needs? Speed, accuracy, pretty reports. Then compare the leading players out there and weigh each of them along those three dimensions. While all the leading vendors do a good job of BI, they each excel in a different area and it will be obvious to you once you do the analysis as to which one firts best for your needs.

Success with Microstrategy (or any BI tool) begins with your data. Spend the time and effort it takes to clean up your data and develop bullet-proof ETL (Extract - Transform - Load) procedures and scripts to keep that data clean at all times. Ensure that you have excellent performance from your database server(s) and plenty of memory available for Microstrategy's tremendous caching engines.

1. How much data do you have?
2. How large of a server farm do you have? Is there a large budget for hardware (MSTR like to have lots of RAM, CPU, and disk space).
3. Do you have a dedicated MSTR developers or contractors? It can take a while for this to be developed, and not everyone can "find out easily" where to go to do things. Documentation is not a strong point... so you need someone who already knows MSTR.
