NETSCOUT nGeniusONE is a deep packet inspection tool that helps to trace the connectivity between the clients, and we get the details like where the packet is dropped, what can be the possible reason of packet drop, and several other parameters regarding network connectivity and its functioning. Hence, it helps in makin our network more stable. We use it for generating trigger and alarm when the packet drop takes place due to any connectivity issue or link flaps. Apart from that we use it to monitor the behavior of server and traffic that is generated. It works as an man-in-middle to sniff the packet, so it helps as an monitoring tool and hence very beneficial for any enterprise or large organization. So, in brief it tell us where the problem persist in the network which can lead to any loss because everything depends upon connectivity and stability of network.
  • It can be integrated with various third party tool or visibility solution like IXIA, and other NMS tool to get a detailed report about behavior of different application.
  • It gives the ability to capture the packet in real time which is very beneficial.
  • It gives a complete detailed history of past days or even months to track the overall behavior so that we can distinguish between the stable and unstable sites and can identify the mist critical site.
  • The dashboard is very user friendly and all the features are clearly visible and well organized. It shows discovery and flap links very clearly location wise so that we can troubleshoot them.
  • The deployment part and initial configuration require so much time and efforts and needs perfect expertise for the implementation purpose.
  • Technical support is poor as they do not provide solution in initial meetings. In 2-3 meetings they simply collect logs and ask time for inspection. We need to continuously follow them for the solution.
  • The costing part is very high and we can get other similar tools with a lot more features and functionalities. So this needs to addressed.
  • With every new version, lot of bugs are introduced hence it is not recommended to move on latest version.
NETSCOUT nGeniusONE is a great network performance monitoring tool as it helps to trace the path of packet and to identify the exact place where the packet is loss. It is well suited in scenarios where the organization have large network and they need continuous monitoring because loss of connectivity may lead to serious financial loss in sectors like banking, hospitals. The network performance and connectivity needs to be stable for proper execution of transactions, bookings, data transfer and other critical task. Performance monitoring of large enterprise is a big task and doing that manually requires very much effort, but with NETSCOUT nGeniusONE it becomes easy.
It is not well suited in scenarios where there is small network and they can survive if any link flaps for small duration of time.

  • NETSCOUT nGeniusONE is the best tool and very profitable for our organization as it helped in to reduce the manual effort of engineers to track the Network flaps and connectivity issue.
  • Return on investment for this product is quiet good as of now and we have achieved 80% ROI till now and we are very much confident that we will achieve the full ROI.
  • It has helped in cost cutting as we need only few network admin and engineers to track the discovery, behavior and connectivity. Earlier we need a lot of employee to do that due to which the organization may suffer some financial loss.
  • OpenNMS and SolarWinds Network Performance Monitor (npm)
NETSCOUT nGeniusONE is the best solution which we have encountered so far. The best part about this is that it can be integrated with various third party tool for more visibility and behavior analysis. The dashboard is loaded with a lot of useful features which gives the complete trend analysis of connectivity loss and network flaps and helps to identify the critical sites which is not present in other technology solution. This is an incredible network performance monitoring tool.

Scout the Network!!

We currently use NetScout as a way of monitoring multiple links between branch offices within our company. The main purpose has been for packet tracing. We have multiple platforms; Microsoft, Unix, Mainframe which we must ensure traffic is not only flowing correctly but within a reasonable timeframe. NetScout has given us this with a graphical interface that can display traffic statics in a way that is easy to read as well as allowing an engineer to dig into the packets even deeper.
  • The graphical interface has to be the key benefit of NetScout. I am more of a packet analyzer but the interface gives the upper levels easier view into the network.
  • The breakdown of sites is useful.
  • The ability of the break the traffic down and go into the packet analyzer straight from the graphical interface. Saves a lot of time writing filters with just simple clicks.
  • Possibly the setup. The organization of setting up the sites weren't as easy as I would have liked.
Packet tracing is its main purpose and well suited for. Unfortunately, I am not a mainframe expert but know enough to know the danger. We have, what I call, a version 1 mainframe which requires a separate stack for its TCP/IP access per program, unlike Microsoft and Unix. With the use of NetScout, we were able to determine a routing issue as well as the incorrect stack that the TCP traffic was routing too. Beginning with the graphical interface we were able to narrow the path down between multiple devices and then analyzing the packet trace generated by NetScout.

  • Packet tracing has been positive. The ROI comes from being able to narrow the packet down fast to determine the network issue.
  • A network diagram based on packet routing would be nice.
Wireshark has been around for years and has been used primarily for packet analyzing. NetScout does this and goes above and beyond with the graphics interface analyzes and customer filtering for packet analyzes. You can go straight to the packet analyze within NetScout but you will find that to be more work, this would be like starting with Wireshark. Instead, begin with the graphical interface to narrow down the traffic, a visual effect. Then go to the packet analyzer, time saver. As for PRTG, it's a NetFlow/SNMP collector with a quick and dirty look at traffic but lacks the tools to dig into the information it provides.

We primarily use nGeniusONE for troubleshooting of issues across the network. By entering the source/destination we can get the metadata and packet level data to have good visibility into what is happening. Additionally, dashboards can be set up for quick views into the network and utilizing baselines, find out if anything is out of the norm. Packet level data can be exported and sent for analysis if necessary as well.

It’s best for troubleshooting issues that require a packet level analysis. By having source/destination you can have a view into how the packets are traversing the network. If alerts/baselines are set up it can help identify something out of the norm. Very useful for VoIP applications as well. Would not recommend for small scale environments.

  • CISO dashboards
Requires quite a bit of training not only for config but to use. Highly recommend having a SME come in from Netscout to help initially for these. Once you learn the UI, it’s much better to use but is not intuitive.
We have a dedicated OSE who has been very helpful. Besides that, we have little experience beyond this specific model.
They are different as one is more used for network config management and SNMP polling. Netscout is more of a packet level, metadata, baselining troubleshooting tool. Both I’d recommend but for different purposes.

It is used globally at over a thousand locations for network traffic analysis, including NetFlow for every site and datacenter packet capturing. The analysis includes bandwidth capacity management, Top Talkers/Top application analysis, VoIP call analysis, and SharePoint traffic. It is used by the Telecom department and recently started to be leveraged by the applications departments. We are also leveraging the service desk to use it for initial incident triage.
  • Good NetFlow collection and analysis.
  • Complete suite of network and application analysis features in one tool.
  • Integration of network and application metrics for comprehensive performance analysis.
  • The interface is very cumbersome and not intuitive.
  • Lack of a strong and understandable API for integration with other tools.
  • High cost.
Great for detailed real-time and historical network and application (over the network) utilization analysis. It works well both for capacity management and live troubleshooting, mostly focusing on the network performance for the applications running over it. Not appropriate for detailed routing analysis (follow full routing path), application performance analysis at the client or server level (before/after reaching the network).

  • Positive: Improved incident MTTR (Mean Time To Resolve), reducing business downtime.
  • Positive: Proactive bandwidth capacity management improving financial visibility and business productivity.
  • Negative: High maintenance required for large organizations with very dynamic changes.
It provides a lot of useful information, but it's not always easy/intuitive to find it. It really needs to get a fully functional API integrated to support automation and integration with other monitoring and analytics tools to enable faster decision making. On the other hand, it gathers a lot of useful information from complex networks that are useful for capacity management and faster incident isolation and resolution.
If you spend the right amount of money with them they work very close to you to support your needs. I ignore how they work in companies with lower expenses on their products. NetScout is not a very dynamic introducing platform with enhancements that their customers need. We contract their professional services so support level is good, although too pricey from my perspective.
SolarWinds provides better modularity, improving your ROI by paying only for what you need as opposed to paying for the entire suite whether you need it or not. It also seems to be much more intuitive. However, I'm not sure that it provides packet capturing functionality for security and advanced troubleshooting purposes.
ExtraHop was evaluated but I'm not sure that it was any simpler to use than NetScout. However, it seems to have a more robust API that we could totally use.
