Oracle database is a great software and is ideal for large organizations that have a lot of data to store. The software ensures security, for example in the banking industry where it is critical to ensure that data does not fall into the wrong hands. However, it is not viable to use Oracle Database in small projects.

If you are tied into using Oracle for your business data storage needs, it will fully recommended you use the latest and greatest version of the software. And Oracle 12c is just that. It provides amazing support, new features and functionality, better security and ability to query, improved management of indexes by means of compression, and support for new data document standards like JSON.

Oracle database is very well suited in companies or organisations who are running online transactions and also have big data for storage.
In the case of a global company, the organisation can embrace the use of Oracle Cloud for data storage.
Oracle Database is less appropriate in a high-level programming language or rather any language regarded as a low-level programming language.

Oracle Database 12c is well suited for uses with a high volume of transactions. Or any use case with thousands of tables and millions of rows of data. It would likely be overkill for any project with low activity and small data storage needs.

Oracle Database 12c is agile enough for the line of work that I do but we are not maxing out the capabilities of the project. I would be curious to see how the product would handle with a larger traffic flow and a more voluminous data set.

Oracle 12c is appropriate for large-scale enterprise applications where data availability, integrity, disaster recovery and efficiency is important. It is not well suited to smaller organizations with small data sets and less need for immediate disaster cutover. The license cost for an Oracle 12c database installation makes it not relevant for small installations or smaller applications, while the support of Oracle and data archival and maintenance make a large installation well worth it.

As it is a general purpose database, it is hard to see it as less appropriate. But anything requiring just a couple of tables with just a handful of rows would not be the reason for the full complexity of a full-featured database. Same thing with niche solutions where a database specifically for that need exists. But for 99% of all data driven applications, Oracle would be my default choice.

Oracle being a large enterprise has perfect tools for all tiers of business. Their database is extremely efficient and coupled with free tools like Oracle SQL Developer, programmers can easily interface with the underlying database.

It is more suited for big shops who can afford expensive hardware upgrades, as Oracle is becoming more hardware demanding with each release. Small shops are losing hopes. It is true excess hardware resources are very much required when demanding performance but for small shops, you don't need all the advisers' reports.

The Oracle Database is very suitable for large-scale enterprise level applications, like maintaining a database for users of a particular electronic currency which interacts with credit card accounts and has a various number of functionalities like automatic transfer of money on a particular date and so on. This is obviously only one particular domain but in reality, it can be used in many other domains.

Oracle can be used for much smaller level applications or information storage purposes as well, but it might just be an overkill due to the performance issues it has, for example, using Oracle where we only need a small number of tables with almost all static values is not efficient.

12c is most suitable for enterprise companies who can afford the licensing burden of enterprise edition and the various licensing options. It's a no-brainer if you're interested in going to or already in the Oracle Cloud but less cut and dried if you're an AWS user, or if you're a pre-12c standard edition user looking to upgrade. Some of the more attractive features of 12c require additional licensing.

Oracle Database 12c is for sure well suited for multinational corporations which want to create a warehouse to store all of their business data and analyze them with reporting tools. It is not really appropriate for smaller companies, because it can be really expensive, both in terms of license and maintenance, and, if the quantity of data produced by the organization is not high enough, may not be worth it. Moreover it may be less appropriate also for storing "big data", especially when compared to other more specialized technologies.

IF someone was looking for an enterprise level database which supports a wide range of development languages, interfaces, big data support, advanced database features, and needs more database support than something like PostgreSLQ could offer, I would point them towards Oracle DB. The big hold back on recommending Oracle DB is the attached price tag.

1. Online Transaction Processing - it's perfect considering all the additional options that Oracle provides
2. E-commerce where we need to maintain different attributes of the product - JSON datatype has been introduced but the functionality cannot come close to document data-stores like Mongo and Couchbase
3. Data warehouse - Oracle supports columnar storage but there are many cheaper alternatives now
