Overall Satisfaction with Microsoft Access

I know Microsoft Access is utilized specifically in my line of business. We had an external vendor create a front end and back end to create a data warehouse for us. This database warehouse includes specific liens so that we can input our customer's special characteristics and numbers.

It creates control, and also outputs information in an Excel format so that we can extrapolate the information in a reasonable manner.
  • It is a true database (where it utilizes table logic)
  • There are readily available templates
  • It's part of the Microsoft Office Suite, so it's a bit more intuitive
  • Database is not as robust than others in the space (Such as Oracle Essbase)
  • Cannot utilize SQL
  • If coding is not robust, output errors compiles
  • Good database (data warehouse) where we are able to reliably maintain static data
  • Cost of implementation was reasonable (cost wise)
  • User Access in Front End Testing through User Access Testing was also reasonable (time wise)
The cost of Microsoft Access as a database was much less cost prohibitive than say other types of databases. Although not as robust as other databases (Oracle's suites such as Essbase), the cost, the time, the training and data integrity is fine for our line of business within a greater financial institution.
If you want to build something relatively simple from a database perspective where you or only a selective group of people require the information, MS Access is well suited because there are templates out there that can help you get started. A lot of user-provided info sites exists out there too, so there's a good community that can help you out. However, if you need something more robust (i.e. you need to work with different lines of businesses within the same organization), you might be in a better position to use Google Business suites.

I have not worked with Microsoft Office 365 which also offers cloud services.
