Likelihood to Recommend

Actian Pervasive Data Integrator

I wouldn't recommend Data Integrator over SSIS, but it may be a better tool than other ETL offerings. Having a background in the Microsoft Stack, I am hesitant to recommend any other products especially in a Microsoft-centric company. If this was the only option to use, I think it does a good job at integrating systems after taking time to learn the approach. "Maps" in Data Integrator is definitely different than "process flow" philosophy in SSIS.

PowerCenter

PowerCenter is well suited for processing of large amounts of data that is structured and pre-defined. It is well-suited for large organizations that have the resources to install, configure and support PowerCenter. It is well suited for large organizations that have a large number of data consultants/analysts that do not have a software development/programming background.PowerCenter is not a good fit for smaller, agile organizations that work with unstructured data and changing/dynamic data.

Pros

Actian Pervasive Data Integrator

  • Map multiple source and destination tables - what would be done in many steps in SSIS can be done in one or two "maps" in Data Integrator.
  • Platform independent, cloud based, no client software.
  • Conversion of data types, write flat files - this helps us with integrating systems.
  • Fairly straightforward to use if the user has ETL experience.

PowerCenter

  • It is quite flexible to handle different type of data formats like DB objects or Tables
  • Good performance when processing lots of data in batch
  • Easy to learn and use

Cons

Actian Pervasive Data Integrator

  • Sometimes the screen does not load- since it is a web based software, this can be seen as a reliability issue.
  • "Maps" can become somewhat complex, and between multiple developers this can be painful when sharing or explaining others' work.
  • The concept of macros adds flexibility in how to solve problems, but is a separate language and can take time to learn and master.

PowerCenter

  • As a developer/integrator, i feel that PowerCenter could use improvement, and that is in the area of automated deployments. There isn't really any scripting options to automate back end deployments of ETL Workflows from one environment to the next. Instead, everything has to be done via the GUI (Graphical User Interface). And while this is a relatively straight forward process, it can be time consuming.
  • There is no real interface between PowerCenter and programs that manage the encapsulation of password for System Accounts. All connections to source and target systems have to be updated via the Power Center Workflow Manager GUI, and entered manually. There is no interface with encryption programs such as MAC VAULT, and as such, admins are required to have access to passwords that information security departments might otherwise not want them to have.

The tool is very flexible and will meet most, if not all, of your data transformation needs. It is an expert-level tool, so building your knowledge-base and user-base (and keeping that base healthy!) is very important. But it will pay off with strong data management and the ability to leverage that data in ways you haven’t thought of yet. Bottom line, data is money, and PowerCenter helps you monetize your data.

PowerCenter is robust and fast, and it does a great job meeting all the needs, not just the most commercially vocal needs. In the hands of an expert power user, you can accomplish almost anything with your data. It is not for new users or intermittent users-- for that the Cloud version is a better fit. Be prepared for costly connectors (priced differently for each source or destination you are working with), and just be planful of your projects so you are not paying for connectors you no longer need or want

Alternatives Considered

Actian Pervasive Data Integrator

Data Integrator was initially a part of a package deal for us with our new Student Information System. It was chosen prior to my arrival at the institution. Since I discovered we have SQL Server licenses, we have decided to use SSIS instead since I have a background in the MSBI stack and SSIS appears to be more straightforward (process flow philosophy vs "map" philosophy.)

PowerCenter

SSIS is a good entry into ETL, for smaller organizations or Microsoft-centric companies. It's strengths lie in its ease-of-use, quick turnaround, and simplicity. Its weaknesses lie in scalability and re-usability (you can achieve re-usability, however segmentation is at the project level with no global scale). Pentaho is a great, low cost solution with deceptive power, however scheduling along with flexibility in other functions such as OS level script execution is a bit weaker. PowerCenter and DataStage are more comparable at an enterprise ETL level, having different management philosophies and approaches. For both, there are features in each that I wish the other either adopted or replaced, however due to its place in the market, ease of finding additional developers, and scalability, PowerCenter was chosen.

Return on Investment

Actian Pervasive Data Integrator

  • This tool was chosen prior to my arrival and was used to build three integrations. We have decided to switch to SSIS since we have licenses for it and it is a more common tool for ETL integrations.
  • It has been difficult to network with individuals that have experience with this tool.
  • Having been a part of a software package purchased, we have chosen to use a different tool for future integrations and plan to rewrite existing integrations.

PowerCenter

  • The data pipeline automation capability of Informatica means that few resources are needed to pre-process the data that ultimately resides in a Data Warehouse. Once a workflow is implemented, manual intervention is not needed.
  • PowerCenter did require more resources and time for installation and configuration than was expected/planned for.
  • The lack of or minimal support of unstructured data means that newer sources of dynamic/changing data cannot be easily processed/transformed through PowerCenter workflows.
