Well suited:- If your organization is serving customers globally, and you have a website catering to customers from different regions globally, a CDN can speed up your content delivery as traffic can route to nearest edge server instead of the origin.- Your organization has a lot of micro-sites, subdomains aside from the main site.- If your site requires an additional layer of protection ie. DDoS protectionLess appropriate:Your organization is localized in a specific region/country. CDN may not have as much benefit in this case.

AWS WAF

It is a pretty useful product if your web application is deployed on Amazon Web Service platform, else it could be a little complicated and pricey. It's useful if you want to lay down your own rules for security and traffic management of your web app. Having AWS WAF can assure you that the application that you are creating have integrated security features which can be maintained easily for future use. It does has some flaws, but it is backed up by Amazon which is doing a great job in everything that they are doing, so it surely has a great future.

Alternatives Considered

We've used -- and considered -- a whole number of CDN offerings. The good news is that almost all of the CDN products on the market are terrific, and will pay for themselves via increased customer satisfaction and lower monthly hosting bills. For some cases, we're still more likely to suggest CloudFlare (which has a free tier) or an integrated offering from a cloud provider, like Cloudfront.

We evaluated Imperva, but we were more convinced with AWS WAF because of the better pricing model, ease of deployment as we were already using the AWS platform which helping in ease of integration. The technical support for AWS WAF seemed to be better as they had better understanding of the overall system and architecture of the product, which helped us in getting a problem solved that was encountered while using AWS WAF. The amount of documentation and helpful material available online for AWS WAF made it the first choice for us to select this product over Imperva.

Return on Investment

  • The front end optimisations available from Akamai are so significant and yet so hidden it makes for an extremely pleasing user experience. When a page loads just that much faster due to images being in the exact right format for the job it gives a clear advantage over competitors.
  • Analytics coming from Akamai have changed the decisions made within the business for the better and have resulted in great improvements in many areas, such as a greater retention of visitors to the site. Little tweaks to possible certain problem areas flagged by Akamai have made a huge difference.
