Amazon RDS

For a general-purpose workload, RDS is a perfect fit and works really well and takes care of a lot of stuff for you (replication, security, monitoring, scaling, storage, publishing logs to CloudWatch). If you have a read-intensive load though, you should probably think of switching to a NoSQL database service like DocumentDB or DynamoDB.

Oracle Database 12c

I believe that Oracle Database can be used almost on any scenario, starting with small department solutions to actually any enterprise level system. It includes many features that allow a single database to work as an OLTP and Data Warehouse at the same time, reducing hardware requirements and the need to implement ETL or integration solutions between OLTP and DW.

Pros

Amazon RDS

  • End-to-end management of your database -- including configuration, handling security, and maintenance.
  • Offers compatibility with many (and the most popular) database technologies -- including but not limited to MySQL, Postgres, Microsoft SQL Server, Oracle DB.
  • Makes backups and replications very easy, which is one of the toughest things to do effectively.

Oracle Database 12c

  • Oracle database is battle tested and has been in the industry for a long time, meaning they have a good understanding of the markets demands.
  • Oracle database is secure and ensures that user data is not tampered with through prompt updates.
  • Peer to peer communities are available to help solve almost all problems that one may be facing.

Cons

Amazon RDS

  • My engineers would be able to speak more thoroughly to the cons. I have only benefited from the fruit of their labor. I can say that, from a Project Management standpoint (interfacing with RDS via a PostgreSQL client and my dashboards), it has only performed well so far.

Oracle Database 12c

  • Oracle 12c SQL Developer is included with the product for no additional licensing cost, but it is much more limited compared to query tools such as TOAD.
  • Oracle 12c stumbles on certain queries with the optimizer not catching simple methods to return queries very quickly. Often a scalar subquery is required to reduce the time by up to 99%.
  • On occasion, the optimizer can miss simple changes such as IN ('1','2','3') working but BETWEEN '1' AND '3' being stuck in an infinite loop.

There is a lot of sunk cost in a product like Oracle 12c. It is doing a great job, it would not provide us much benefit to switch to another product even if it did the same thing due to the work involved in making such a switch. It would not be cost effective.

I've been using AWS Relational Database Services in several projects in different environments and from the AWS products, maybe this one together to EC2 are my favourite. They deliver what they promise. Reliable, fast, easy and with a fair price (in comparison to commercial products which have obscure license agreements).

As a Oracle Database administrator,I have installed oracle 12c databases and upgraded my databases to 12c and made use of new features that are introduced in this version. It has given us many features using which I can secure my data in a broader way hence I highly recommend usage of oracle 12c version.

Support

Support for overall AWS services is a 10. We had one issue with creating a dev / stage / prod database within Aurora and a quick call with Amazon allowed us to figure out the issues we were having and it was determined it was how we were creating our initial setup of the databases

The ORACLE-SUPPORT gives quick responses most of the time I raised a service request. They help us resolve issues and they also come on call if required. I have resolved many issues on my production databases using their help in minimum time. If the issue is critical and the response is late from them,we initiate call to manager

Overall the implementation went very well and after that everything came out as expected - in terms of performance and scalability. People should always install and upgrade a stable version for production with the latest patch set updates, test properly as much as possible, and should have a backup plan if anything unexpected happens

Alternatives Considered

Amazon RDS

Our other application components are all hosted within Amazon's systems already, and the tight coupling of RDS with the security groups and virtual private cloud offerings made locking down privacy and security much easier than integrating with an outside provider. The deeper support for Postgres also made it easier to make the decision for Amazon as that database was higher on our wish list.

Oracle12c database is Oracle's flagship product and has been there for a long time. Over the years - Oracle Improved a lot both design and feature wise. Oracle Enterprise Manager Cloud Control, Oracle Database Appliance, Oracle Exadata Database Machine, Oracle backup appliance, and Oracle Big data Appliance are Oracle's product. Oracle12c Database has been designed to work best on this product. These products are becoming popular day by day.

Return on Investment

Amazon RDS

  • RDS makes projects much easier. Set up time is decreased, and it is very easy to create and destroy databases as needed for testing.
  • The ability to call AWS tech support for database-level issues and advice is a money saver if you don't have a high-end DBA on your team or need someone else to set things up with a little assistance.
  • It is cheap and easy to grant secure access to your RDS instances to other companies or divisions of your company that use AWS.

Oracle Database 12c

  • It is reliable. I have not seen a downage since working with this database. I am an end user and I rarely get into the nuts and bolts, so I can't say much about this!
  • There is a period of downtime nightly to backup all databases in which time we can only query against specific static feeds which is annoying! I would imagine the may be due to the nature of our enterprise and the fact that we do not need to operate into the late evening!
