AWS Cloud9

AWS Cloud9 is great for product engineering and coding where you must take time to pair program and code in a specific isolated environment. It is entirely cloud based so there's no worry about saving and data consistency. It is all hosted on the Amazon Web Services cloud. It is less appropriate for more general workflows that don't require a specific cloud instance.

Sublime Text

Sublime Text is the best text editing tool, especially for working on web-based software products. If your organization is working with iOS apps, or native applications, then Sublime Text might not be the tool you need, but this is likely obvious, as Sublime Text is not designed for this kind of use.

Pros

AWS Cloud9

  • It provides an extremely intuitive and easy-to-use interface, so adapting to it does not take much time.
  • It contains the most common programming languages.
  • It allows the export of files, either directly to the repository or to the team where you want it.
  • It is housed in the cloud so you can work with it from anywhere.
  • Allows you to share code or work on them with others in real-time.
  • Does not require installation.

Sublime Text

  • Analyzing large amount of texts like logs is easy due to good searching capabilities
  • Updating big text files is quite easy due to very useful and flexible "find & replace" capabilities
  • The software is super lightweight and is not being "felt" at all in terms of performance

Cons

AWS Cloud9

  • Confusing documentation - AWS's documentation remains quite confusing, and the layout of other services/settings that you have to use with Cloud9 can be a bit of a handful.
  • Sometimes slow - As the size of a project increases, the editor gets increasingly slower, and starts slowing down the browser overall.
  • Long setup process - The setup for Cloud9 can be hard and tough, especially since the documentation is quite hard to understand.

Sublime Text

  • In a world of free and open text editors, Sublime Text does ask for donations. You can use the product freely with only a very infrequent popup asking for donations. You can use it however long you like without paying, but it is well worth it to donate to.
  • People not used to the functionality may need a bit of time to get up to speed using the documentation.
  • An integrated terminal would be nice, but that is just a quibble. It's hard to find many cons with Sublime Text.

I love this application. It has helped to improve my work. Also, I became so used to the shortcuts that It's hard for me to change to another editor.

Usability

The interface for Cloud9 needs some improvement. It is simply not as powerful and intelligent as a local text editor would be and thus it lacks the capabilities of fast filling when coding. Otherwise, I think it has a fair interface that they have tried mimicking an IDE.

This is a programmers tool. As such a lot of the features and benefits are lost on a non-technical user. To get the most out of the tool you need to have a basic crash course in how it works and what it can do. The documentation and community are good, but it takes a bit of time to get up to speed.

Customer support is managed by the Cloud support team. I won't be able to comment on details, but it's fast.

Never had to use their customer support before. There is ample documentation online so it's straightforward to find a solution to any problem you might encounter. For example, I needed to convert a string of HTML code to a properly formatted HTML file to "modify." Easy to do when there are so many users of the product who have needed to do that same thing before.

Alternatives Considered

AWS Cloud9

We used Codeanywhere & Lambda, but it's little to test serverless code with these services, so I think AWS Cloud9 is best to code and test Serverless code.

Sublime Text

I have used just about every text editor there is that is free or has a free trial to evaluate. Text editors are very important to me as a software developer and over the years, I've made it a point to try out a great many of them. I do love Sublime Text Editor on Windows. And I loved TextMate on Mac. But once I made the transition to Sublime, I never looked back. Sublime Text does everything right. It provides all the features I look for, with a simple, uncluttered user interface, and extremely fast performance. My ability to zip around files using hotkeys is unparalleled in any other text editor I've found, except maybe Vim or Emacs, but those require such an arcane buy-in to build up the muscle memory. I still have a soft spot for Vim, and I have friends who swear by Emacs and who I can watch blazing around from file to file. But to me, Sublime remains my first choice for a software text editor simply for its clean interface and excellent file browsing and search features.

Return on Investment

AWS Cloud9

  • It is a tool that has allowed us to optimize the life cycle of the projects since it is excellent for this because you can share code from one department to another quickly.
  • It allows to always be able to access the code from any device, at any time.
  • Save time in the installation of an IDE, plugins, compilers, etc.
  • It is ideal to use with other AWS tools since they have a great synergy, like CodeBuild, CodeCommit, CodeStar, etc.

Sublime Text

  • Sublime has become our daily code editor. As new employees join the company, they find it easy to pick up Sublime, which means we've been able to reduce onboarding costs in terms of acclimating new members to our team's development processes.
  • The fact that Sublime has a flat, one-time fee means we don't have to worry about future licensing, with the exception of major software releases.
