Likelihood to Recommend

Cisco Aironet 2800 Series Access Points

The reason [Cisco Aironet 2800 Series Access Points is] not a 10/10 in this section is really if you're using another provider for your main network equipment then this may not be the easiest transition. If you're already using Cisco stuff then yes go for the upgrade and get these better units in place. Their range and function outweigh their cost increase.

Cisco Catalyst 9800-L Wireless Controller

I always recommend two WLCs instead of a single one to think about the failover scenario. It is very important to think about this detail. Catalyst 9800-L is for small to medium scenarios supporting up to 300 access points to purchase the performance license. Licenses can be extended over time without any problems. As the company grows, we buy more and enable our access points.

Cons

Cisco Aironet 2800 Series Access Points

  • CleanAir - Put this technology into all the APs.
  • GPS Tracker - I can't understand why only the Cisco 1570 has this option as well as larger Cisco 3800 APs. Why can't this be in all APs so they can be easily mapped in Google for positioning and later plotted for the coverage zone.

  • To support more access points and customers to manage, it is necessary to purchase another performance license that we have not purchased.

Because until now I haven't had any issues or cases where I needed to create a ticket with Tac from Cisco related to their performance or availability. They have a small size that permits or allows you to install it in each place that you need to mount it, their design is small and appropriate for every kind of office.

Lately we had less issues. Most probably because we reduced the number of Wireless LAN controllers. So less trouble for upgrades as well.We don't have any access point in stand alone mode. It's something I don't suggest, unless it's just for a small office and not for a larger company with different sites.

This access point does not usually randomly shut off. It can't happen but it's generally due to a power over ethernet failures which would could be considered a user error.

As previously mentioned, we have no problems with inoperative WLC because we have two units in an active/standby scenario. The WLAN network is not essential for the company because many use notebooks and smartphones on the corporate network and need access to the internet at all times.

The global performance for the 2800 Aironet series is quite high, this is why I gave an 8. Users are not complaining about network coverage or speed capacity. The AUX port is also attached on the switch with the LAG feature which is a nice to have feature to increase the bandwidth.

We prioritize a scenario in high availability and redundancy with an active WLC and the secondary standby in order to prevent the wireless network from being inoperable. Our second redundancy in addition to the equipment is the internet links where we also have two. With two WLCs we have a secure and always available network.

Make sure to get a professional wireless assessment before purchasing AP's. That way you will only purchase what you need and know where the wiring infrastructure will need to be to streamline the installation and tuning process.

Alternatives Considered

Cisco Aironet 2800 Series Access Points

D-Link Wireless access points and D-Link Wireless controllers were being used in our organization previously. They were working well with a small number of users. But as we started to expand wireless coverage and the user base started to grow they became less efficient and frequent disconnection and low-speed issues were faced. Cisco Aironet Access points overcome these issues and have been working great in our environment.

Scalability

Cisco Aironet 2800 Series Access Points 8.8
Based on 12 answers
The Cisco Aironet 2800 Series Access Points have been highly scalable, in particular with Cisco-rich environments. This is due to Cisco's DNA Center. Normally, it would take more time to deploy and configure multiple new APs on a network. Cisco DNA Center integration costs less time to configure all newly added APs to the network.

Return on Investment

Cisco Aironet 2800 Series Access Points

  • The main thing is you can set them and forget about them, they don't cause a lot of problems so you can focus on other things.
  • They have performed well, in areas where we needed more APs to offload, these can handle more users.
