WebSphere Application Server

I believe WebSphere Application Server (WAS) is suited for all JEE applications. I have worked on J2EE based applications including commerce and portlets applications and believe that using WAS has added advantage over other JEE Servers. Although we faced a few issues while implementing queues connection factories over SSL for WebSphere MQ. IBM support folks are always there to help.

Microsoft IIS

Microsoft IIS is well suited for simple website hosting and for more complex web application setups as well. Granular security features allow you to make your web site or app to be protected as much as possible. Plus by default the best integration with other Microsoft services like Active Directory, WSUS, SCCM, etc. However, if you need just a basic website that is not based on MS components, open source solutions like Apache or Nginx could be better and cheaper (based on Linux).

Pros

WebSphere Application Server

  • It works out of the box. Its basic functionality is all there and everything works with no adjustments.
  • The functionality is there for fine tuning, to allow applications to be easier to access and quicker with some tweaks, but again, these aren't necessary for basic running.

Microsoft IIS

  • Ease of access for users.
  • Not having to have a fat client installed for particular applications; just access from browser or mobile device.
  • Ease of manageability for web applications and websites.
  • Easy to troubleshoot.
  • Easy to maintain and perform system maintenance.
  • Many many features, functions, and very customizable.

Cons

WebSphere Application Server

  • Ease of use in terms of deployment, give simple interface to do simple stuff like Tomcat, JBoss or GlassFish.
  • Takes long time to start the server.
  • The Liferay wars need to be decorated and then deployed. Perhaps we could simplify that.
  • Some of the concepts are good for complexity that WAS can handle but could be simplified and better documented, like concepts of well and profile, context, etc.
  • A Liferay war file created using Liferay Developer studio runs fine in Tomcat, however that may not run in WAS 7.x because it needs to be decorated. I had one war for a Liferay portlet with a simple cron job, and had hard time running to WAS server. It was running on the latest free download done on my friends m/c. Other times I have seen that there are issues running a war file that runs on Tomcat but runs on WAS after lot of customization for WAS.
  • The corporations like this however, the product may need better vibrant community of users where issues can be discussed.

Microsoft IIS

  • The performance of Microsoft IIS is always slightly behind more lean web servers like Apache and NGINX.
  • Microsoft IIS is locked to the Windows Operating System. For some components (SCCM and WSUS) you are essentially forced to use IIS, instead of a more open source Apache or Mono solution.
  • Security concerns over Windows IIS web servers. While this isn't directly the fault of IIS, since issues usually occur from vulnerabilities within the Windows OS.
  • IIS is closed source, which does remove customizability and the ability for the community to review the code base. An open source web server will usually has less exploits, since the code base can be reviewed and debugged by anyone.

When you have a 99.9% uptime, what else can you say? It deserves a 10.

We have no intention to replace all applications running on top of the IIS platform. Not all applications support other platforms and not all support staff are skilled in Linux/Apache platform support. Whereas IIS may not be the best performing or most secure web platform available, for the aforementioned reasons, it is impossible not to continue use of this product.

Microsoft IIS is a very intuitive tool and quite easy to use. Most of its main features are located in the GUI. It is only when you get in to some of the more advanced feature sets that you will need to view logs or use the command line tools to complete a task.

ARR (application request routing) in Microsoft IIS Server enables the web-admins to increase the web app reliability and availability through the rule based routing and load balancing of HTTP requests which in turn provides highly available server. IIS 7.0 Manager also provides kernel as well as user mode caching for faster performance and in case if the server fails, the IIS server has good amount of details logged in its log files which help understand and debug the cause quickly. Load balancing facilitates IIS server to fight against availability issues.

In my experience, I have never had significant issues with IIS performance. Sometimes I've experienced issues with loading time, but it is mostly related to the web site code. However Amazon, Microsoft and Google providing free cloud services with very limited resources, and in that scenario, "heavy" websites on IIS could be the issue. In other situations - performance is good.

IBM was quick to respond when we had an issue with our specific infrastructure. We raised a PMR, which they picked up quickly and updated us about every step of the way. We had an appropriate fix for quite a business critical issue within a fortnight, which was impressive!

As mentioned earlier there is so much documentation or guides or stack overflow questions out there that someone will have faced the same or very similar scenario to what you are going through that you will almost certainly find a solution to what you are after.

Alternatives Considered

WebSphere Application Server

IBM support is better than Oracle, from past experience. Weblogic and WebSphere Application Server are somewhat similar versus the open source JBOSS. For many applications we had selected WAS to have a supported platform and used some of the competitors in other various use cases.

Apache and Nginx are both lower overhead solutions compared to IIS, but require extensive configuration through files or command lines. For someone creating a website for the first time, these solutions are difficult to understand and implement.

Microsoft IIS Server is scalable if the underlying server configuration is done correctly. Use x64 edition v/s 32bit and using 32bit mode application pools are some of the tweaks to be done to make the IIS server scalable. There are too many small configurations need to be carried out in order to make a highly scalable IIS server hence not giving full score in this area.

Return on Investment

WebSphere Application Server

  • Takes long time to learn deploy and adapt to the complexity and vast difference with other servers.
  • Negative impact on ROI in terms of more expertise needed may be compensated with more robust application that WAS offers.
  • Because of lack of ease of use, the time taken to deploy and run applications is high.

Microsoft IIS

  • IIS is enabling us to rapidly deploy and maintain new products for our staff and customers. It is difficult to assign an ROI on such efforts, but we have seen improvements in our Net Promoter Scores - both internally and externally - as a result of these efforts.
