ManageEngine Password Manager Pro

PMP is well suited for organizations that have a lot of different applications throughout different departments that all have different credentials. It is also good for setting up sharing so that different users have access to only the passwords that are needed for their work. Users are also able to store their own credentials in this tool without sharing them with any other users. PMP is less appropriate for smaller organizations or ones where only a single department only needs to store passwords. In this case, there are other cheaper and simpler tools more suited for the task.

Workspace ONE Access (formerly VMware Identity Manager)

VMWare Identity Manager is a fantastic solution if you're looking for a "single point of access" type experience for delivering applications and data to your users. There are some features it lacks compared to some competitors, particularly when it comes to integration with other products and customization of look/feel, but we have been very successful using it to provide an easier user experience than our old systems were able to deliver.

Pros

ManageEngine Password Manager Pro

  • Once we got used to the application specific terminology, the tool is fairly straight forward.
  • Has all the basic functionality for password management.
  • Its cost effective. For an enterprise tool, it is the lowest cost.

Workspace ONE Access (formerly VMware Identity Manager)

  • It provides an "SSO" type experience for access to applications and data. Users sign in to one "portal" and then have access to whatever university systems they need to do their job.
  • It greatly simplifies securing these types of access. Firewall rulesets can be made much simpler and easier to manage, as well.

Cons

ManageEngine Password Manager Pro

  • In some browsers the copy password function does not work well
  • The search engine sometimes returns blank results (all browsers included: Chrome, IE11)
  • New upgrades are not visible in the tool itself, like in other third party tools

Workspace ONE Access (formerly VMware Identity Manager)

  • There is not a ton of look/feel customization for VMWare Identity manager. We have had some complaints about the icons for the delivered applications, and it's very difficult to set up custom icons.
  • Integrating Identity Manager with our enterprise authentication solution, which is based on AD FS was not immediately intuitive or easy to do. It was possible, but it took some work.
  • Integrating Identity Manager with VMWare's own TrueSSO product (to allow certificate based authentication to work with MFA) was not intuitive and took some support calls.

ME PM Pro is more suited for a larger organization with multiple employees needing access to store and manage passwords.

Workspace ONE Access (formerly VMware Identity Manager)

We also examined several other options, particularly Lenovo Unified Workspace. The Lenovo product had some advantages over the VMWare product, particularly in the areas of customization of the look / feel and user experience. However, we have been a longtime VMWare customer, and we have VMWare VDI and other product implementations in place now that paired very well with the VMWare product.

Return on Investment

ManageEngine Password Manager Pro

  • PMP has made it easier for us to store and share important credentials with other team members in a secure manner.
  • PMP has eliminated the need for using personal credential management tools that can be insecure and could put data at risk.
  • Integrating PMP with SSO has made it easier for everyone to access the tool quickly.

Workspace ONE Access (formerly VMware Identity Manager)

  • We were able to replace several products from different companies with a single one. IDM replaced a Citrix farm as well as various VPN solutions.
  • Identity Manager has had a positive impact on our workload on our IT and Security engineers, as well as our desktop support group. We are now able to manage one location for application delivery instead of many, and security and other troubleshooting is much simplified, which means a lighter workload for those groups.
