SingleStore (formerly MemSQL)

Migrating existing databases to one instance, accelerate and scale-out existing data warehouses/analytics platforms. Replace HIVE for SingleStore, which will boost your overall performance and support your data management. Get ready for the cloud by using it on-premise, your own cloud/data center, or as a SAAS. The functionality is the same and migrating will be smooth.

Vertica

Vertica as a data warehouse to deliver analytics in-house and even to your client base on scale is not rivaled anywhere in the market. Frankly, in my experience it is not even close to equaled. Because it is such a powerful data warehouse, some people attempt to use it as a transactional database. It certainly is not one of those. Individual row inserts are slow and do not perform well. Deletes are a whole other story. RDBMS it is definitely not. OLAP it rocks.

Pros

SingleStore (formerly MemSQL)

  • We use it as a replacement for having a separate in-memory cache and a traditional disk-based database because SingleStore does both in a single package.
  • We also use the row store for storing transactional state and the column store for storing time series data. Having both in the same product is nice.
  • We get 7x compression for the time series data, which is really good for scaling.

Vertica

  • Extremely fast query performance - Vertica is one of the fastest query engines out there.
  • Scales to TBs - Scales reasonably well up to 10-20 nodes and 10 - 100s of TB of data.
  • Easy to Use - Fairly easy to user, we made quite some headway with just 1 person running it for a while.

Cons

SingleStore (formerly MemSQL)

  • Features related on [SingleStore (formerly MemSQL)] studio UI for monitoring needed some improvement when we used. The SingleStore studio support team helped us in resolving the issues with relation on running the different sets of indexing queries. Challenges here being the detailed logs were not available and we needed to connect with DBA for more detail drill down.
  • SingleStore can have some more improvement in setting up more examples on help documentation for the beginners and early learners.

Vertica

  • Could use some work on better integrating with cloud providers and open source technologies. For AWS you will find an AMI in the marketplace and recently a connector for loading data from S3 directly was created. With last release, integration with Kafka was added that can help.
  • Managing large workloads (concurrent queries) is a bit challenging.
  • Having a way to provide an estimate on the duration for currently executing queries / etc. can be helpful. Vertica provides some counters for the query execution engine that are helpful but some may find confusing.
  • Unloading data over JDBC is very slow. We've had to come up with alternatives based on vsql, etc. Not a very clean, official on how to unload data.

I still want to see the performance about using latest version of spark and memsql. About renewal, if there is a new and better version of spark-memsql connector, then maybe.

[Until it is] supported on AWS ECS containers, I will reserve a higher rating for SingleStore. Right now it works well on EC2 and serves our current purpose, [but] would look forward to seeing SingleStore respond to our urge of feature in a shorter time period with high quality and security.

Very responsive to trouble tickets - Often, I think, the SingleStore's monitoring systems have already alerted the engineers by the time I get around to writing a ticket (about 10 - 20 mins after we see a problem). I feel like things are escalated nicely and SingleStore takes resolving trouble tickets seriously. Also SingleStore follows up after incidents to with a post mortem and actionable takaways to improve the product. Very satisfied here.

I haven't had any recent opportunity to reach out to Vertica support. From what I remember, I believe whenever I reached out to them the experience was smooth.

Alternatives Considered

SingleStore (formerly MemSQL)

I guess the main difference is how the memory is used for stacking and storing data until it reaches the final destination, the performance is awesome compared with others and when you have a real time business with a certain complexity. The development team would be more familiarized with the SQL environment and there’s practically a zero learning curve, when you compare this with other data bases you’re going to find that there’s a huge saving in time and money.

Vertica

Vertica performs well when the query has good stats and is tuned well. Options for GUI clients are ugly and outdated. IO optimized: it's a columnar store with no indexing structures to maintain like traditional databases. The indexing is achieved by storing the data sorted on disk, which itself is run transparently as a background process.

Return on Investment

SingleStore (formerly MemSQL)

  • It can save thousands of dollars in licensing. However you still have to provision big clusters, which sometimes it's more expensive than having traditional technologies and it's difficult to create business cases for our customers
  • Time. Differently SS is key to save time, and time is money.
  • Enhanced user experience (for the IT/BI teams)

Vertica

  • Positive impact on ROI by being able to get customer insights in real-time.
  • Positive ROI through reduced time to set-up and maintain Vertica instances.
