  • The overall cost for Blackboard Learn was not that much when compared to other software.
  • We've been able to save money by having faculty and staff that were already familiar with other Blackboard products so the learning curve wasn't as severe.
  • The interface made it better for students.

  • Having an LMS such as Blackboard allows for the school to expand its online offerings in a scalable way and increase the student body beyond the limitations of a physical campus.
  • Blackboard requires a lot of support. Depending on the size of your institution you will need multiple IT professionals to troubleshoot and train your staff on how to properly use it. For an online program, a 24 help desk is a must, Blackboard's support services to students are minimal
  • Using an LMS and getting people off the 'paper and pencil' model has lots of positive effects on the environment and gives your organization access to a detailed level of data you would otherwise never be able to achieve.

  • It has really helped reduce time for trying to track progress for student organizations. At first, we were using a spreadsheet, but when we switched to BB, it made life so much easier and freed up a lot of time.
  • Students are able to consistently see their grades, so tracking course progress is possible and easy.

Blackboard Just So-So

  • Blackboard has had a neutral impact on our business objectives in that some faculty use it more than others. We don't hear much about Blackboard unless a feature is broken.
  • I do think that Blackboard is very frustrating for many faculty to use.

  • The use of Blackboard in the instance we were using it allowed us to retain students that may have dropped out or entered a cyber charter school. Though the initial numbers are small, the potential is great.

  • With a single sign-on, faculty have easy access to sharing course information, communicating with all students, and assessing students through a variety of easy-to-use tools and capabilities. Students are also able to see all of their courses that use Blackboard at-a-glance and access course content 24x7 as well as to check their performance and grades at any point throughout the semester. This has had a positive impact on the effectiveness and access beyond the classroom walls of the university.
  • Because the system is seamless and all the tools are integrated into a common platform, students and faculty are able to move from one tool or feature to another with a few clicks. This creates a system that is effective and efficient in the delivery of teaching and in the students' learning.
  • As the university works to provide flexible learning opportunities that meet the needs of students, Blackboard enables a single scalable environment to deliver high quality education - from the classroom to online.

  • I have heard complaints from students that Blackboard is difficult to use. We have had some students leave because they could not figure out Blackboard. Some of them just had difficulty with it, some of them refused to ask for help.
  • We have instructors who refuse to use Blackboard. They are not "technically savvy" and have difficulty understanding how it works. This prevents us from developing fully online programs and degrees because these instructors are the ones who teach the courses needed for a particular degree.
  • Our revenues have increased dramatically due to online courses. This has allowed us to maintain updated labs and use the extra funding in areas that need help.
  • Blackboard has helped our school stay on the cutting edge of technology. It is something that we can be very proud of. Our distance education program has grown tremendously in a short amount of time. We understand that distance learning is the future and we embrace it.

  • Increased interest from students who are able to enroll in rich online courses that fit their busy work/life schedules.
  • Various academic departments are able to develop and deliver additional course offerings with various modes of instruction (web-enhanced, blended, and online formats).
  • All faculty are utilizing the same learning management system which helps foster fruitful conversation for collaborating on topics of rich learning environments for students with the use of educational technology.

  • Students make decisions on what school they will attend based on many things, one of those is the quality of web services that the institution provides. Overall, our students are satisfied with what services Blackboard provides.
  • We don't really have any data that shows that Blackboard helps with student retention. I feel that when Blackboard is running well, it's a value-neutral proposition, but if students are frustrated with the interface or with a specific software bug, their opinion of the institution goes down.
  • Blackboard licensing fees go up every contract year, and while that is to be expected, I actually feel that Blackboard's inability to be agile in the education industry is a detriment to their value as a vendor. They really need to step it up if they want to retain customers.

  • Increased efficiency of student to student interaction as well as student to teacher interaction.
  • Increased student comprehension of complex topics through the use of a discussion board which allowed students to clarify issues for one another.
  • Blackboard increased student access to relevant course materials at no cost to the student. This provides a nice alternative to costly readers or textbooks.

  • On the positive side, Blackboard has allowed us to deliver content to clients no matter where they are, and without need for a classroom.
  • On the negative side, our reputation has been tarnished due to the ongoing and annoying technical issues we've had establishing and maintaining a good connection with our various clients.
