Learning Management System (LMS) Overview

What is a Learning Management System?

A Learning Management System or LMS is a technology platform that helps instructors manage and organize educational materials online, as well as conduct online courses. Key capabilities include course catalogues, course authoring, student portals, virtual classrooms, collaboration, and assessments. LMSs are used by K-12 schools, higher education institutions, school districts, etc.

Using an LMS can help streamline the learning process by providing a central location for students and teachers to post and access course materials, calendars, assessments and grades, and by minimizing the use of paper materials. It can also help instructors and administrators track student progress both on an individual and collective level.

Free and Open-Source Learning Management Systems

In addition to commercial offerings such as Blackboard and McGraw-Hill's Connect, there are several free and/or open-source LMS tools such as Moodle and Canvas. Commercial offerings are usually more expensive but tend to include a dedicated support staff and professional services, while support for open-source products usually comes from the user community.

Corporate LMS and eTraining

Corporations also use LMSs to manage and deliver online training. Many LMS vendors are focused on either educational institutions or corporations, though some offer products for both use cases.

Factors to Consider when Selecting an LMS

Ease of use

Since the LMS will be widely used by students, instructors, administrators, and sometimes parents, an LMS should be easy to learn and use with little to no training.

Mobile access

Many students and instructors wish to interact with the LMS from a mobile device, so the quality of the mobile app can be key.

Institution size / scalability

The flexibility, scalability and performance of an LMS can vary widely, so this is a key factor to consider for large institutions.

LMS Features & Capabilities

Learning Content Management

Most LMSs including content authoring, content storage and management, and course libraries. Many comply with the technical standards for e-learning software SCORM and AICC, or Tin Can API. LMSs should also support multimedia content and offer PowerPoint integration.

Course Management

Many LMSs also offer registration management, course catalogue management, course calendars, gradebooks, student and instructor portals, attendance tracking, proficiency testing, e-commerce capabilities (the ability to sell online courses), and virtual classrooms.

Social Learning and Collaboration

Some LMSs support social learning with collaboration features such as live chat, blog modules, a friend or following concept, content sharing and rating, discussion boards, file sharing, integration with social media networks, profiling and expertise capabilities, and gamification tools.
