It allow us additional flexibility and scalability. We use the virtual servers along side of IBM Cloud Bare Metal Servers for processes that don't need the IBM Cloud Bare Metal Servers speed or architecture. We love keeping things low latency which this allows us to do since they are in the same data center. They also provide us with faster deploy time.

It is easy for us to manage all our data and workloads to manage at one location (at least for our department). The way the connection works or the VPC peering works is super simple and support teams are always there to help.

These services connect very well together inside the IBM platform. This ease of integration saves time and helps optimize movement of data across these components. For the most part, it's all open source anyway, and so the "flavor" of the infrastructure is agnostic to me. However, I believe I gain data speed and availability by building components together inside a single entity. Depending on your data usage, this might be a critical need.

The impact of using multiple IBM services together in my organization is an overall harmonious and smooth operation experience with the 3 most important aspects given as per the below example. Flexibility to cater to our needs and the efficiency and the strategic value of competitive advantage by providing the most innovative technology available.

Being able to leverage the other IBM Cloud offerings with VPC allowed us flexibility in building a robust migration application. In addition it is enabling us more options for add-on solutions for IBM Cloud Pak for Automation.

This is usually a good thing, but I have had a mixed bag. The public cloud does not always mesh well with the private cloud and there is a decent amount of configuration required before both can interconnect. As it usually follows, added complexity has caused us issues with traceability and outages.

Connecting a VPC, Classic Inf and a Power Series Network is not the simplest of operations, but is well supported.
Direct Links and Transit Gateways are required in this scenario.

  • IBM Cloud Functions

Cloud Functions in conjunction with Cloud Object Storage allows massive scalability in IO and CPU speed. Being able to read, processing and write 10s of GBs per second is pretty amazing, considering that you can scale up to 1000x4GB cloud functions in under 10s. There are several "embarrassingly parallelizable" parts of our data processing pipeline that have gone from 10s of minutes to 10s of seconds by rewriting them to use Cloud Functions.

Having the possibility to use multiple products offered by the same provider is very important. You reduce the cost of your infrastructure. Using Bare Metal Servers with Cloud Instances and other services at the same place is good for saving time, saving money and constantly know what is deployed for your organization.

We haven't really used much of the other IBM Cloud products yet, we like to manage all we can ourselves. But it's good to know we can have all that portfolio any time we need. Coming from the Softlayer days, this has given me the confidence that we are hosting our services with a strong provider.

Having several services working together helped to simplify our lives. The offer that IBM cloud has keeps growing and it is catching up with competitors. Related to Kubernetes, at the time of our implementation we had problems with load balancers but now the experience is better. Also the same happened to us in relation to Visual Recognition.

Thanks to IBM Cloud we were able to consolidate multiple services at one provider and use both containerized, virtualized, and bare-metal workloads together for our CI needs.
